This is the line that got me. That is what we are trying to show our children about the world. That it could be beautiful and that they can help it become that way.

@no el I agree that the argument for realism is a sound one. If you argue that realism is the way to fix things, then you agree things are worth fixing. The job is worth doing. But I think what optimists like John and myself are getting at is this: where does that belief come from? What is the thing that stops you from looking at all that horrific suffering and just giving up? I'd argue: hope.

My daughter once spilled a glass of milk. Her grandmother's immediate response was "Look what you did." It was hardwired in her that help existed, but first you have to hate yourself. Years later she can still be crippled by shame, but at every opportunity, I am sure to revel in her successes and say "Look what you did" with a smile and all the pride in the world. The world is not ready for how awesome she is.

That is beautiful and just gutted me. As I putter around my kitchen getting it ready for a load of children, nearly not children, to descend upon it and play D&D, I think about each of them building on the good bones.

I have read and heard this poem many times and it still gave me goosebumps to hear it again. “This place could be beautiful, right? You could make this place beautiful.” I have no words for how gorgeous that sentiment is.

This poem reminded me of John Green's quote "The world may be broken, but hope is not crazy"

“For every loved child, a child broken, bagged, sunk in a lake.”
That line hit way too hard. I’m sure it’s metaphorical, but that literally happened to my little brother. He was 16. This past May he went missing and he was found several days later in a pond called Dreamland Lake. They said it was an accident. We don’t believe that. We just think they wanted to be done with the investigation. The evidence does not show an accident. He was and is loved very much. It’s hard to see the beauty in the world when things like that happen.

Great poem powerfully read. And it truly hurt. Yes, there is optimism there, but it is so tempered with reality - with the awful - that I almost cannot bear it.

sometimes I feel like being a therapist is just the desperately hopeful attempt to get the world to be only 49% terrible. just trying to find the broken, bagged children and showing them their good bones
and you see it all the time, the ways in which strangers want to break you, the stones thrown at birds. it's all you see everyday
but you're trying to make this place beautiful. it could be beautiful. it can

A very honest poem. Despite all the good in the world, there is always going to something that breaks your heart or wrecks your brain. But ultimately, you get to decide whether you choose to be cynical and cry over spilled milk, or be optimistic and do your part to make the world a better place.

this place is already beautiful - we just need to see it:
    Quarelling blackbirds
    Tails, chests, glares dispute boundaries
    What pretty songs!

i'm familiar with this poem but still am catching feefees about the last lines. i think because we all have a different idea of beautiful it's hard to get to some big beautiful that we can all look at and say yeah! that's it! lots and lots of little beautifuls, though, and that will do well enough for now.
