Hey Mark. This is great. I learned enough to get started understanding COBIT. What a fantastic video you did there. Thank you very much for your effort on this.
Good question. Check out the COBIT "Design Guide" if you haven't already. The publication outlines the mapping tables for each of the design factors. store.isaca.org/s/store#/store/browse/detail/a2S4w000004Ko9bEAC
Do we have to determine the value of baseline as well? If yes, how we do it? is it kind of benchmark for industry, last performance or just simply the median possible value for each DF?
Yes. You can adjust this to your needs. I've had situations where clients demand a higher priority on some of the objectives. There is no guidance on exactly what number to use (+100 or -100), but you can play around with the outcomes to gain a satisfactory management consensus. I hope this helps!
Thanks for this. Quick question; To set up IT Governance process in an organisation, must one start with the 'Design Factors' or can one start from the 'goals cascade'? Also, in completing the Design factor template, who needs to be involved in the activity? Is it a brainstorming activity with Management?
Hello Mark - I looked on Isaca - I found a cobit toolkit but it does not include this particular spreadsheet for Design factors - Could you please post the specific link for this tool - thanks
Go to the ISACA site, then navigate to the download page for the Design Guide: www.isaca.org/bookstore/bookstore-cobit_19-digital/wcb19dgd Once you go there, you click the link that says "Show Full Description" - you can find the toolkit download there. Good luck!
Hi Mark, thanks for the awesome blog but more importantly your LinkedIn course on this topic - legendary! i loved it. Reading through the blogs below, I noticed you mentioned to do the course through an accredited instructor. I wanted to know what value add a $1450 course would have over a Udemy or other inexpensive online course on the same topic. Do the accredited course/instructor add a lot more? I'm keen to take both foundation and design courses. Thanks in advance, azhar
Good question Azhar and thank you for your kind words. I believe everyone has different learning styles. Some of us prefer self learning and others thrive in an instructor-led environment. Personally I like both. However, my point was that if you decide to do an instructor led course just make sure they are accredited. Does that make sense?
Ah got it Mark, thanks for taking the time to replay. Can’t wait for your next video/blog. It’ll be great if you can do one on how to bring in other frameworks e.g., ITIL4 or others in COBIT to understand the hand-offs and see how end-to-end journey would look like. Thanks once again.
Hi Mark, I am a student and I have a case study about Design Toolkit. According to Case study we have to follow Governance Systems Design Workflow to analyze current situation of the Company. I have a question about Summery 2 and Summery 3. What does it mean the objectives Importance value on the Summery 3. I mean If the objective has negative %45 objective importance, what does it mean? or the objective has %85 positive objective importance, what does it mean? Could you please explain or interpret it for me?
Good question. Here's how I look at it. The relevance for each objective in the summaries, there's a "0" line right down the middle. If an objective falls to the right (+) side, it shows the positive relevance and to the left (-) side, it simply means that if you focus on that objective, you are most likely wasting your resources. I generally look at the percentages as guides to help me select which objectives are most important. I usually start with those objectives that have 50% or more positive relevance. If none show up more than 50%, I'll go to 40% and so on. This is a simple visual that allows you to put some prioritization over the most important areas. I hope this helps, and good luck!
Hi Mark, Thanks for this and your other videos on COBIT19. I am unable to locate the Excel Design Toolkit on ISACA website at the link mentioned in your video. Please help
@@MarkThomasGRC - hello Mark. Thanks for a great video. I also downloaded COBIT 2019 Toolkit and was NOT able to find this Excel Design document. Can you please direct me to where I can obtain this?
@biolekkk I just checked and yep, it's still there. At the bottom of that page, click in the + Show full description. Under there you'll find the download. Good luck!
Hi Mark , I went for a interview at a IT firm and they use COBIT 2019.Can you provide any tips on where to start learning Cobit. I'm currently binge watching your video's , but I'm sure it's not the bes tway to go about it.
Honestly, the best way to actually learn COBIT is to sit through a foundation course with an accredited instructor. If that doesn't fit your budget, you should, at a minumum, download two guides from isaca.org/resources/cobit: The COBIT 2019 Introduction and Methodology and COBIT 2019 Governance and Management Objectives. The digital versions of these are free for you to download if you create a username and password. There is another way, but it will cost you $20 USD per month. You could join my E-Learning library where I add new content every month on COBIT, Risk, IT Governance, Cybersecurity and Audit/Assurance. I hope this helps, good luck!
Hello sir, I'm from Indonesia. I want to ask, for the Implementation of the 2019 COBIT Design Factor in research or thesis, is it mandatory to identify the 11 stages? Or can DF 1 - DF 4 provide an objective picture of good governance in determining domains? Without doing the steps DF 5-DF 10 Sir? Please share your knowledge sir. Thank You
Do we should assessment all concepts? We have some previous idea about internal control IT do it. What will it first point, does it set approach to reach the target one?
You don't have to assess all of the design factors. At a minimum, I would at least assess the first four factors. The tool can offer you suggested targets.
Good question. It depends on what you are trying to accomplish. If you are in improvement mode then future state. I would start with current state to get you a baseline first.
You have to get that from the ISACA site here: store.isaca.org/s/store#/store/browse/detail/a2S4w000004Ko9bEAC You can find it in the toolkit download. Good luck!

Thank you!
The baseline in each design factor i should change or it’s built from tool ?
Do we have to determine the value of baseline as well? If yes, how we do it? is it kind of benchmark for industry, last performance or just simply the median possible value for each DF?
Good question. You need to go into the actual Design Guide Publication - it describes the method of how these are calculated.
Hey, Mark thanks you for your explanation, so I need to make a question in step 4 we have a colun to adjust +100 or -100 it's necessary adjust them?
