  • Ever watched somebody cast a laser beam of a Spey cast across the river and wished you could do the same. Well here are the basics behind those tight loops and hw to cast them.

Thanks Peter, some difficult physics beautifully explained!

Hi ,Mr.Charles. I have got further in spey cast during these time, and found something strange. After viewed my slow motion scandi cast video, I saw the leader curves almost vertical when it leaving the water surface, and the fly leaves water surface verticaly too,and goes high, doesn't follow the head straightly, not as smooth as the otherone's video. A good tight loop ,the leader and fly should be a long straight tail at the back, but in my loop,it seems tight at the begginning flight, but unrolls immediately and becomes open after the fly leaves the water surface, although a 70 feet cast.I use 9 ft 5 wt single handed rod and 28ft 210gr scandi head,9 ft 4X mono leader and a size12 or size14 dry/wet fly, it turnsover normally ,everything gets straight .I wonder what the problem is, blowing anchor or overpower ?Thank you.

Yup, sounds like a mild blown anchor. Just back off the power and the speed, and it will go away.

@@hooked4lifeca Is the same power and speed as a overhead cast? I found another problem is creeping, it shorten my foward stroke, and I use a short stroke and high stop position for recent time,so I can't help hammering it to compensate the power, caused a tailing loop and blowing anchor. I found my earliest video, while I was using a long stroke and low stop position ,I saw the leader is like a long tail, flies straightly, without these problems.

@@loomi47 And you're probably target fixated as well. Watching your rod tip as it goes back will get the body involved and slow the process down. My videos in this series, from 7 to 10 will go through all of the issues you've raised here.

@@photographybypetercharles9939 I focus on the anchor placement in the most time, actually as you said, I pay little attention to the rod tip path, I will try it.Thanks again!
