  • In this episode I answer the question I get often of "How do I design a zine". This is part 1 of two zine design episodes where I am going to give you a complete breakdown of each of the steps I went through to layout and design my first zine, as well as the zines Im currently working on.
    I get asked asked questions about zines on a daily basis through facebook, youtube and instagram. So we are doing an entire series revolving entirely around the topic of zines. If you have any zine related questions, be sure to leave them in the comments below, and I will do what I can to answer them.
    I by no means claim to be an expert on the topic, however I experienced quite a bit through the process of making my first zine, and am happy to share the highs and lows of what I experienced.

      Nick Exposed This is so cool. I'm putting one together for family documentary. 2 questions, when are the rest of the zine episodes coming out? And also, when printed, do your photos get cropped slightly by the printer?

    • @NickExposed
      @NickExposed  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Curtis! Im trying to get the next couple episodes recorded asap. I just got a new screen record software because my last one was junk. So Im all set to start recording, I just need to get the time.
      To answer your second question, the only images that get cropped just a bit (the smallest bit) is the images that are full page bleed. Theres a bleed zone you set up with the file, where the images overlay a bit, that way when the book is cut there is no chance of having an unwanted border on the edge. If that makes sense.

      Nick Exposed awesome, thanks for the info. I can't wait for the next episodes in this series. It would also be interesting to get your input on the different paper quality and print options that seem to be available from different vendors. Thanks

    Great video. When I worked in commercial print houses, we called this process making a "dummy"...ya I know. The goal is the same. To know what is going to go where so when you get to the computer the layout is finished. Glad to see there are a few folks who still like to see their work on paper. For myself, it's not finished until the photo makes it to paper in some form. Keep up the great work!

      Nadine Ammar I came across the same thing when I was originally looking for info on how to make a zine. That's why I am so excited to share what I've learned, because it doesn't seem like anyone else is wanting to. And I can definitely do a video about that. It will probably be best if I do it when I get to that end of the process with the zine I'm currently working on. Thanks for the suggestion and comment 😃

    Awesome video. I can't wait for the next one.
    This is exactly what I am doing to set up my next zine.
    For my first one, I sped out my Polaroids on the floor and put them in the order that told my story the best. I did this about five different times before getting the order they are in now. Then I used Lightroom to layout the zine pages, printed them on copy paper and a thin cardstock for the cover, folded and cut them by hand. finally I hand stapled all 50 copies.

    • @NickExposed
      @NickExposed  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Travis Cannady nice! I love hearing the process others went through for their zines! Yours must have been so much work hand stapling and folding everything. Do you have a particular show, or music you put on when working through this process? Just out of curiosity

    • @travis_cannady
      @travis_cannady 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nick, it was a pain in the ass hand stapling all of them. I found a binding stapler for $5 at Goodwill, it is going to make things go a lot smoother. When I was putting my zine layout together, I think I was watching The Office.

    • @NickExposed
      @NickExposed  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Travis Cannady I've been on the lookout for a binding stapler each time I go to a thrift store. But haven't found anything yet. Haha. And the office!! Em and I frequently watch the office when doing our creative stuff. Something about good humor that works so well! Thanks for sharing.

      Christian Meermann hey thanks buddy. What did the light table feature do?

    • @ChristianMeermann
      @ChristianMeermann 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nick Exposed Basically, it allowed you to do with digital images what you did with your printed ones. Put them side by side, check various arrangements and storylines. Check out this vid to see how it worked back in the day: th-cam.com/video/5_OUOZjvHlA/w-d-xo.html

    Wall or floor, but usually i go straight to the computer. Keep them coming nick!

    • @NickExposed
      @NickExposed  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Amaury Pucciarelli you do the whole process on the computer? What does that workflow look like for you? I love hearing stuff like that

    • @apucciarellid
      @apucciarellid 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nick Exposed it's a bit confusing at first, because you don't actually see the whole layout until you zoom out, i use indesign, work page by page and after 5 or 10 pages y zoom out and look how it is and if i have to do some changes i'll do it instantly, it's easier for me that way because of the lack of space where i live now, but i've done it the old way too, laying prints on a table or on the wall and i definitely recommend that way and then on the computer. I've also tried doing the layout with sheets of paper and glueing or taping small xerox prints to it, like analog indesign hahaha

    • @NickExposed
      @NickExposed  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Amaury Pucciarelli nice! Yea lack of space can be an issue. That's why I typically work on it all at a coffee shop. However I'm weird and like working on stuff with lots of busyness happening around me haha.

  • @KingJvpes

    Love the video nick! I do have a question tho. My last couple zines when printed only come out in smaller square versions never full page. Even when I resize the image to a full page it comes out small. I don't know what I'm doing wrong maybe the software I use? What do you use to layout your zines? Thanks for the video nick!!!!

    • @NickExposed
      @NickExposed  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      KingJvpes hey man! That is strange that it's printing out like that. I use photoshop to layout my zines. The next zine vid I put up will be on that whole process, as well as my settings for exporting the images. So maybe that will help in answering that question.

    • @KingJvpes

      @NickExposed  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      KingJvpes you bet dude! Sorry to push your question off to a future video. I always hate it when people do that, but I think it will be easier that way then me trying to type it all out. 👌🏻

    • @KingJvpes
      @KingJvpes 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh no man its all good. It's no problem, I'm still in the stage of what theme i want my next zine to be then i have to go shoot it so it'll be a while till i have to format the zine haha. Well anyways, this video definitely helped, your method is really organized and neat. lol I remember when making my first couple zines i would stress about what pictures would couple and how i could remember where everything goes so Nick thank you for the video, I'll be sure to use everything you just taught me!!

      Its going to be featuring images/events that people will relate to from our town ( Mount Gambier in South Australia ) presented in a different way, light and shadow in black and white. I am just getting the images together now from LR and I am waiting for some film scans to come back as well. Once I have the images, around 12 I think, ( still shooting for this ) I will start to construct it as you have shown above and also I will have a look at the Book module in LR. Still a long way to go but it is great to have the two projects on the go and I am already planning more for the future. I have had a quick look at Blurb, looks cost effective but I havn't checked postage to Australia yet. I will look into printing locally as well.

    • @NickExposed
      @NickExposed  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like that concept! Finding ways for others to relate to your own town! I look forward to seeing how it all comes together. I am happy to hear you are thinking in terms of projects! At least for me, it made photography much more enjoyable, and I was able to move forward shooting with a sense of purpose and direction. I hope it serves you much in the same way. Cheers

    Nick do you print the final zine yourself or send it to a commercial printer? If commercial, who do you use?

    • @NickExposed
      @NickExposed  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Jim! I send it out to a local print shop here in town called Crop Marks Printing. I love working with local shops. For one it supports local business, and two it makes seeing the proofs and making adjustments that much easier. I hope that answers your question :) Feel free to reach out with any others. Im here to serve, and will be upfront if I dont have an answer. Cheers

    Hey Nick! Just wondering what type of paper did you used for this zine?

    • @NickExposed
      @NickExposed  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JosephLopezPhotography hey man. So the paper was a satin finish paper. The cover was an 80 weight cover paper and the inside pages were 30 weight. If you're overseas at all you may have to see what that translates to in European paper weight. But it's a pretty standard cover and inside weight. I chose the satin finish to get nice rich blacks on the page. It looks very nice in person.
