  • This week on Regular Car Reviews, Mr. Regular drives a straight-piped 2004 Hyundai
Tiburon! This was a car from before Hyundai's renaissance, back when you got a Hyundai because you couldn't get a Honda. But is there more to the Hyundai Tiburon than meets the eye? Is this closer to a
Hyundai Veloster? Or is it just an SN-95 Mustang dressed like a Hyundai? Join us for a test drive and
an honest review, as RCR drives the 2004 Hyundai Tiburon!

When I was 19, my girlfriend Christina cheated on me with a guy named Robby who drove one of these. He was an Olive Garden waiter. A few years later he was found guilty of robbing pharmacies for pain pills. He’s still in prison, and she’s raising their kids alone.
Hyundai Tiburon: The official car of you’re raising those ugly kids by yourself, Christina.

@@Masterdebater-q5c I had a hand me down 08 legacy with the stupid flat four that EVERY subaru guy busts over. It was a crappy car. I wound up putting SIX wheel bearings in it. I'm a mechanic. Changing wheel bearing assemblies is child's play. The wheel bearings were not garbage. Like most cars it's only got 4 wheels. I was on the way to pick up my 96 4Runner that I bought when the engine decided to blow up. I am the only one in my family that doesn't drive a subaru. Their cars are nice. Mine was not. Messed up but that's a common story with young kids. It's why I would never want my kids(if I had any) to drive until they're 25 and would rather live in a place with good public transport. It's the hormones at that era that make the kids adrenaline junkie nuts. I can tell you from experience that the only times I was close to death was while in a car and there were multiple close calls and vehicular damage that kept getting worse and worse till I managed to total a car.

My buddy was a awful reckless driver a few years ago but he is pretty chill and relaxed now. I trust him more than my dad. My dad hasn't been in any wrecks my whole life. But he is just so aggressive.
But you can't restrict driving to much. The gotta learn one way or another. I couldn't drive for a month because of a seizure and it was awful. Any place with public transportation will be super expensive. Driving is a requirement in this country.

I know it's a different model, but I checked Marketplace a few weeks ago for Genesis Coupes after seeing a decent one in traffic. Every one within 500 miles had at least one of the following. Engine ticks/knocks. AT codes/needs clutch. Terrible fake carbon fiber appliques. Awful aftermarket suspension. Rebuilt title. I feel Tiburons suffered the same fate. A series of degenerate owners have ruined the vast majority of them.

    • @SI0AX

@@Noah_E That's the fate of affordable racy looking cars. Look at the 90's Hondas for example. They were like 1-4k a few years ago and were considered beater cars and now are worth a lot of money and very hard to find not beat to shit.
The Genesis Coups had like gear grinding issues from what I head, just not really a good car but not as bad as other cars either. It's kind of what you get for the lower price point. If you're willing to do the fixes yourself it's a kind of OK platform.

The fact that the MSRP adjusted for inflation is $32k is insane.
I think when we complain about new car prices it’s mostly inflation. 32k these days is the MSRP of a GTI, GR86 or civic Si. It goes without saying that all those are vastly better cars in every way, even with possible dealer markups the value is vastly better.

I had one with the 2.0 engine, 2005. It was my (well technically my ex’s but we bought it together) first car and I regret nothing. It looked nice, the red color (the darker one, the light is kinda ugly) was very pretty. Nothing major ever broke in 6 years, she still drives it now. And it was surprisingly practical. I even used it to transport wood boards for my woodworking hobby, lol. Can’t do that with ls430 that I drive now. The Hyundai fit a lot of stuff when we moved apartments, and with seats unfolded three people could semi-uncomfortably sit in the back. It accelerated well enough for driving in the city but struggled outside. Driving over 120 km/h was very noisy.
The stuff about not being able to afford anything else is quite on point though, we bought it because she found it cool looking and it was cheap. I think there are far worse choices for a car for the price. Glad we bought this one then.

I had the 4-cylinder model and raced it at my local circle track and it was a very competitive and honestly reliable car! I ran a Tiburon for 4 seasons, the first 2 were in a car with pretty severe frame damage (the previous owner didn't have it insured and crashed it into a stump), and then after running that for 2 seasons, I bought a straight Tiburon with a blown motor and rebuilt the block from my old car and put it in the fresh body, ran it for a season, and then flipped it and it never ran quite right after that.

If i had a dollar for everytime someone talks about the Tiburons shortcomings rather than what it does do right, I would be rich. Tiburon is 1. Very reliable. I own two. Both 6 speed manuals. 2. The v6 with a proper exhaust sounds better than most v6 sports cars that are way better i.e. 350z/370z. And 3. Tuning potential rivals our favorite nissans, toyota, or even some hondas. Cars take boost mods very well. 4. It does look very very good. 5. May not be some toyota celica or acura rsx its still a fun car to drive. I prefer to drive my Hyundai Tiburon over my 2015 Scion FR-S i used to have.

    2. I had KDM "Avante" badges (Korean Elantra) on it with Loden emblems to replace the Hyundai emblem. NO ONE knew what the car was! Crazy to think that was 20 years ago.

  • @That_AMC_Guy
    @That_AMC_Guy 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

I don't know.... I've had my Tiburon for almost 20 years now. You've got to place it with it's contemporaries though.... the Tiburon went up against cars like the Neon, the Sunfire, the Cavalier/Cobalt.... you know, the cheaper sports coupes. It was outclassed by the Acura RSX, the Mitsubishi Eclipse or the Toyota Celica. The Tiburon couldn't hold a candle to those cars in price, power, equipment or handling capability.
But where I think the Tiburon beat them ALL was in styling. There's a rumor that Hyundai approached Pininfarina and you can't help but notice some resemblance to a Ferrari 599. So, a stylish little sports coupe that smacks of Italian design, with a peppy little V6 and an (available) lovely little 6-speed gearbox?? For around $20,000??? How is this a bad thing???
Yes, the car is pretty much the slowest out of them all and I've always joked the V6 has the power of a four; the smoothness of a six but the thirst of an eight. Equip a Tib with some decent rubber and it's like a go-cart with heated, leather seats. Richard Hammond reviewed and LOVED a Tiburon he had and James May coined the jokey phrase about driving slow cars fast. The Tiburon embodies that. These cars are a hoot to toss around corners at nearly illegal speeds. They lap them up and ask for more.
They are comfortable, they are adorably handsome little cars and very useful with the big hatch and the folding seats. I famously fit 21 mid-tower PC's in mine when I worked in I.T.
It's a shame Hyundai, or even the public at large.... didn't put much faith in these cars. If they'd had come with 200-225 horsepowers and RWD.... they'd have sold a million of them. They would have kicked off the RWD revolution. I know there was talk of an AWD version but that was never to be. There was also a convertible version on the horizon but that too.... never came to fruition. These cars did not sell very well and Hyundai didn't want to invest in a car that didn't sell well.
The Genesis was a much better vehicle all around, but I didn't like it's styling anywhere near as much and the Veloster's styling literally made me wretch. Disgustingly unattractive little crapboxes.

Comparing it to something more expensive is just taking a shit on an otherwise good car, like if you compare apples to oranges you'll always get the kind of result you are looking for. Having owned and driven one that felt like a new car 200k km in I'm going to call bad faith on this kind of bullshit.

I rather liked the Tiburon. It really felt like Hyundai TRIED with this car when you compare it to what came before. No, the Delta engine isn't particularly powerful, but after working on one, I think they're smartly engineered. The upper plenum covering the rear cylinder bank isn't great, but they weren't the only ones guilty of that, to be fair, and they're easy enough to service for a FWD V6. Even the timing belt is surprisingly easy.

Around that time I bought a Scion tC. It was a steal for around $16,000. 17" alloys, 4 wheel disc/abs, dual glass roof, mp3 (woohoo) player and the Camry motor. It was a good car. After the warranty expired I added a turbo and was easily making 270 hp to the wheels. I then got married and needed a family car so I sold it for an SUV. Great times.

I also encounter the female equivalent around that time, they drove 8th gen Mercury Cougars (the Mondeo in other markets), same women still drive stock high trim package Civics and act like it would take on something like a Dodge Challenger...
