Twelve inch fashion dolls!! Jem was a GIANT compared to Barbie, but her proportions were way more realistic (bigger feet, smaller bewbs) I absolutely loved the twelve inch dolls. I had the dolls in second grade and I didn't part with them until I was almost 30.

I had all the Jem dolls and accessories including the awesome tapes that I played over and over. I still remember all the songs. I gave them to my nieces and nephews a couple years ago. That may have been a mistake!
The show had 3 seasons, and the 1980's Jem dolls were made by Hasbro themselves. In fact, the face mold and the body of the oldschool Jem dolls is literally the same as a 1970's Kenner (which was later purchase by Hasbro, so that's why) doll, called Darci. If you go looking into it you can start noticing. Also you were right for pointing out the anime vibe of her hair, as the animation was outsourced to the japanese Toei Doga (now Toei Animation) studio, and also the south korean AKOM studio. It was really clearly a shoestring budget, rushed and inconsistent, but that's just how Hasbro used to operate.

Jem had only 3 seasons I think but it really deserved more. My childhood was robbed when it comes to that. I wasn't very girly... ok nevermind... I was a SUPER tomboy... but I really liked that show. And I'm still bummed that it only got a handful of seasons. But still. It did better than Firefly, and that in itself is a crime. PS: I've never been to Vegas (only stopped there for a moment while on a bus when I Moved from SoCal back to NYC) but isn't it hot during the day then cold at night because it's a desert? Or at least the drop is fairly drastic?
Jem was originally going to be the X-Man "The Dazzler," whose mutant power is to turn sound into light (therefore she can create holograms). "Dazzler the Movie" was published, but was never made into a movie. Nevertheless, the series and dolls were made as Jem without the Marvel Comics connection.

I remember the slumber party episode where Maxie had a talk show and she did this ponytail bang thing. So cute!
