The "FH-IM70," also known as the Silent Clutch, is what I have on my bike. It has been working silient and flawlessly for almost 18 years, but this winter, it started to seize up, and I probably need to lubricate it. It's now that I realize that if it were to fail completely, there are no spare parts available.

Thanks for this valuable note! I knew about Nexus silent hubs, but not a tiny bit about the Nexave family hubs, like the one you own. Though discontinued, there are still exploded views for your hub 😀

PS The purpose of the video was to debunk the myth of some modern Shimano hubs being silent. That's why the video says "As of today..." Nevertheless, I'm curiously grateful for your note! 🤝

I've been a while so love silent hubs so i put more than enough grease in hub and all of them whatever model and brand will be silent. It's not silent at home while testing, but on road environment you just cannot hear it. Sound will be back after around 1000km later and will kept in a quite smooth sound almost forever then.

Thanks for your awesome video series. Did Shimano actually change anything inside the freewheel mechanism when they stopped marketing them as "silent", in order for the freewheel not to actively disengage anymore (as originally advertised and shown in their Scylence videos)?

I guess there was a change. But not a good one. It was a kind of “change” you make when you are fucked up on time, but need to “do at least something” and pretend that everything “is fine” 😂😂😂

Shimano used to make a silent hub. I think it was back in the early 2000s and called the silent clutch or something like that. I only know because I had one, and it was lovely.

Thank you for bringing this up. Indeed, Shimano marketed it as the "Silent clutch" technology. And even still does this, but only on internally geared "automatic" hubs. E.g. Nexus:

I still have a Shimano silent hub new in the box, they were often used on police bikes. It is 100% silent. The Shimano ceased production years ago.

I bought this m8110-b model hub for my new frame two days ago still in delivery process. ı thought this hub very loud because of ratchet system like DT Swiss. and I worried when see this video is there any chance to make this hub always loud (like make more tension to springs inside the freehub) fifty fifty chance is very risky 😅

Hi, this XT hud has neither a loud ratchet nor reliability. It’s relatively light and cheap, yeah! It accommodates 12-spd MicroSpline cassettes, also yeah! But other than that, the hub is no good, unfortunately!
