Me too. Two or three emails, or toons basically every day. Always end the day with some laughs. It’s a shame the original website is down though. Limitation to TH-cam isn’t quite the same.
Here’s the thing. Ive heard people talk about how family guy or the simpsons has worn out over the years..... Ive *never* heard anyone talk about how homestar runner is overplayed. The show itself mightve not been successful, but it created a fanbase that truly shaped its generation.
I feel so weird that the average Homestar video gets 100k views at most. Was it really that niche? Did I just happen upon something this good by chance at age 8?
It helps that in much of its second decade, there wasn't that much being put out. That prevented it from getting stale. Absence making the heart grow fonder and all that.
I discovered homestarrunner a few years ago and honestly, it’s gold! It’s a work of art! I’m forever grateful the pioneered the internet animation industry
Aw yeah, Homestar Runner! The transition from Flash to TH-cam was a difficult one, as the clickable elements in the animations (not just at the end) aren't things that can be found any more, but it's great that they still exist and even cooler that we still get to see new stuff from time to time. You covered this incredibly well! Very much looking forward to the follow-ups!
I feel what makes Homestar Runner so good is how it’s written. Some HR quotes are still gold to this day. Since the animation is so simple, the memorabilia comes from the characters, dialogue, and music.
The best part about Homestar Runner is how timeless it is. It’s jokes and humor can live on for generations because it didn’t rely on topical themes or references-just pure cartoonish silliness.
Two years on, but honestly even with the jokes that do require pre existing knowledge of familiarity to fully get it, the jokes are still funny even without that knowledge
my kids introduced me to the Legendary Homsar... and since then ALL my daughter's boyfriends (she is 31) have been 'Sugar Bob' and my son and I are fans of the Burninator.... Trogdor!!!
I still remember the day in November 2003 when I was a 7-year-old 2nd grader and my older brother showed me the "crazy cartoon" sbemail. It's been my favorite cartoon ever since. I was so excited when email 100 was released.
Crazy cartoon is my favorite sbemail too! I was a decent amount older when it came out but that one always stuck with me. If I remember right it was also the debut of Hey Steve! 3 trophies for the chort indeed.
Love HSR still to this day. I make jokes EVERY DAY from it. I re-watch videos...everyday. I'd say during its time it succeeded. In fact, it still succeeds to this day for me.
Man I genuinely can't believe that most people I talk to don't know Homestar. I'm definitely gonna show it to my kids one day, it's really the epitome of harmless kids' entertainment that's actually cleverly-written and funny. There's a reason TBC went on to work on Gravity Falls - they have a good eye for compelling youth content.
I'm really happy that Homestar Runner has been getting appreciation videos made- I just did one on my channel! But great job on this one- you made a lot of cool editing choices!

Thank you for the video. I still watch Homestar. Just started introducing the characters to my kids. Gotta avoid certain words (they're 4 and 8), but I'm teaching them what QUALITY humor (and animation) is.

I hate how millennials assume all of Gen Z are frickin babies. Gen Z started in 1995. I was eight when Strong Bad was using the Lappy 486. My cousin showed me my first toon and for years Homestar Runner was the only thing I would watch.
i have only just found out abt homestar runner THIS year bcus im, well, a gen z'er .... but i haven't found a show that is as silly, goofy and just FUN. it has aged so well, its actually so funny.
It is widely held possible fact, but at least a myth that a guy I served in the USMC with wrote the email that created Trogdor while we we re stationed at Camp Pendleton. Well, g2g (Good To Go) Lance Corporal Kaiser, California
But did you has what it took to join the Homestarmy? Could you bring a sack lunch, some orange slices, and five dollars to serve your co-lo-nel and invade Strongbadia? Did you, stupid? 😉
When I was in highschool, a significant chunk of my humor was doing Homestar Runner voices... 20+ yrs later this is still true, but no one thinks it is funny anymore.
The level of depth covered in the timeframe of this video is honestly impressive. I appreciate the work you put into this and look forward to the continuation of this series! While it didn't contain anything I didn't already know, this will now be what I reference to anyone I discuss Homestar with, who shows intrigue but never watched too much or is getting into it but curious of its past and creators.
It's hard to believe I've been watching HSR for almost 20 years. That time just flew by. It's weird that in 2004 I was introduced to the Aquabats so them and HSR were two of my loves in the early 2000's and now, here they are working together! I have also loved Calvin and Hobbes for decades but today in this video was the first time I've seen a picture of Bill Watterson!

Homestarrunner is literally what shaped my sense of humor back in my teens. It was such a huge thing, me and my brother always turning to their website every Monday. Occasionally going back to their older stuff to find more Easter eggs we missed. One time I made a Strongbad Marinette out of nothing but recycled material for a school project. Twas a great time.
As a young adult I was mesmerized by the show. Kid friendly but with just enough of an underlying edge to it made it extremely entertaining. Every so often I'll spend hours watch old cartoons and they still make me laugh.
i can’t believe a small deltarune song introduced me to this entire series, i swear if homestar runner never died out the internet would be much better
I’m a member of Gen Z so I didn’t grow up with this series. Instead I got into it recently because of Poker Night and oh my god I love it. It’s exactly my humor and I’m so sad that the kids around me don’t know about it!
To me, Homestar Runner is an important part in indie animation. It taught us that everything has to count, even in the smallest details. Every gag and each moment is taken account for that even the least important has value. In fact, Homestar Runner is one half of what would make BFDI what it is today (the other being Total Drama Island). So, in a way, Homestar Runner was responsible for the whole object show community by virtue of influencing BFDI. And I see BFDI being responsible for indie shows in general for what they are today.
I remember one day when i was young my mom said i did a good "jorb". I was rightfully confused so she showed me a video on TH-cam and the rest is history
Really great video! One quibble: there’s a build-up about the collaboration, but then who Experimental Film was made with is never named... maybe it was an editing oversight, but a mention of TMBG and a sentence or two about their place in nerd/pop culture feels like it’s missing. Still, great look back and I’ll be back for more!
@@CultureClashh not really. But hey! MECHA TROGDOR, Right?? I'ma check out more of y'all's content, No need to respond, further, though I do appreciate the inactivity! 💛
You kinda forgot to mention the fact why Experimental Film was a big deal. If someone who didn't know what They Might Be Giants sounded like they'd be confused.
I’m glad you did this and hats off and all, but boy was it hard not to notice the generational divide in your style of making something…. anything really. Your subject matter is a show that revolves around creativity, simplicity, and subtle yet genius pop culture references that are probably still mostly lost on people under the age of 35. The way that Ren & Stimpy were able to take the piss out of the 50’s and 60’s, these guys took the piss out of the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s. It was genius. You had to give it time. You had to let yourself become part of the running joke - to see it from where the creators were coming from. And you had to be paying attention. And that leads me to your film here. It’s made about this genius subject matter, and as I’ve said, my hat is off to you for taking it on. But whereas their audience seemed to be intelligent people who were patient enough to get and appreciate the joke, it would seem your audience could very well be intellectually challenged people who have zero attention span. “A diamond in the rough.” Why do I need a piece of diamond stock footage? You use stock footage for things like puzzle pieces and stew as if we either do not know what a puzzle piece or stew or a diamond is. It’s either that (that we’re stupid) or that you are following the format needed to keep people’s attention in the 2020’s. Rather than just showing clips of the show itself or stills of the show, you’re forced to show stock footage of diamonds and stew. That’s the only way it works today, right? Just keep them dazzled at all times. Hey, whatever works for you. But it’s such a glaring and almost ironic juxtaposition when the film is about this topic. I think I’ve laid out why at this point. Your generation has the skills to create the visual and audial portion of a show like Homestar Runner in your sleep. But I wonder if you have the talent, intelligence, patience, cleverness to write anything close. Or the drive to actually create it. I’m obviously speaking in generalities here. It would seem YOU do. But again, the audience at large that you and so many others from your generation seem to be creating things for…. well, it doesn’t inspire a whole lot of hope.
Do people even browse the web anymore? Everyone has already bowed down to google and Facebook, so a small website like this would never survive these days. Still love Homestar though
For those who love Homestar Runner, check out Two More Eggs. It's a newer series made for Disney Channel by the same guys and it has all the same charm and humor.
Any particular reason you seem to have refused to mention They Might Be Giants by name? I mean, you pointed out how doing the video for their song was a personal high point for the brothers, why leave the name of the band out?
oh no there was no reason other than i just didnt mention it. i probably should have, though i am currently working on a collab video right now on the music of homestar runner, so it will most definitely be in there
I think the title for this video doesn't really reflect the content. Like you kinda mention how the Brothers Chaps never sold out and it led to Homestarunner not being super profitable at times, but it's definitely not the main point nor is it really explored in much that depth.
It makes me sad that they felt like they had to abandon something as good as Homestar Runner for forgettable not as good works just to make money. It almost seems counter intuitive.
I may be too bitter, but I was left a little soured on the Bros Chaps; specifically, their decision to sell new merch over the last few years, while not really providing new content. It really feels like Trogdor the Board Game and such are purely being sold based of remaining nostalgia from a decade ago.
@@northernstepperz And I find it hard to believe you don;t know what I meant. The cartoons/games/music etc are the content to get and hold fans' love and attention. The board game, while technically content, is a product for sale, playing off the love a fanbase holds after a decade+. Very unlikely to sell many copies if it was not based off a beloved franchise. Possible, but not that probable.
@@Babbleplay so you're mad you don't get free content? Still incredibly odd. Creators don't owe you free stuff. And making a board game isn't a betrayal and doesn't need them to make videos to justify it. Also like they made videos about the board game.
@@northernstepperz Well, I do get your point, I do also feel it is kind of tacky to keep coming out with new merch to sell at this point. Honestly, I feel the exact same way about nickelodeon still selling tons of invader Zim merchandise years after they chose to cancel the show. The creator didn’t cancel it; that was Nickelodeon. And yet, look around; you will still see invader, Zim T-shirts, and gear on people all over the place.

Strongbad is the MAN!
facts
Any particular reason you seem to have refused to mention They Might Be Giants by name? I mean, you pointed out how doing the video for their song was a personal high point for the brothers, why leave the name of the band out?
oh no there was no reason other than i just didnt mention it. i probably should have, though i am currently working on a collab video right now on the music of homestar runner, so it will most definitely be in there
Yeah eh. Good jorb. Listen to ween!?
When you love H*R and are a Gen Z: =D
Nice use of prop cut aways VH1.
Homestar was the last good real thing.
So good too
This is a great video, but your title is really confusing, at first i thought this video was gonna diss on homestar at first
yeah i need to reframe it thanks for that feedback
0:12 or maybe i'm just from a different culture?
Maybe both
@@CultureClashh hehe
Oof looking at these views we'll need a "the fall of culture clash" video
Ikr hahaha
@@CultureClashh haha na I'm just joking. You're making good stuff keep at it. ❤
It’s just a grind haha some topics hit others dont’ it’s all a game haha
@@CultureClashh tell me about it I've been doing it for 6 years and stuck at 18k
I think the title for this video doesn't really reflect the content. Like you kinda mention how the Brothers Chaps never sold out and it led to Homestarunner not being super profitable at times, but it's definitely not the main point nor is it really explored in much that depth.
Brothers ChapS. Chaps. Not Chap.
Haha I left that in for someone to find you win
It makes me sad that they felt like they had to abandon something as good as Homestar Runner for forgettable not as good works just to make money. It almost seems counter intuitive.
I may be too bitter, but I was left a little soured on the Bros Chaps; specifically, their decision to sell new merch over the last few years, while not really providing new content. It really feels like Trogdor the Board Game and such are purely being sold based of remaining nostalgia from a decade ago.
Fair
It's very odd you do not see a board game as content.
@@northernstepperz
Well, I do get your point, I do also feel it is kind of tacky to keep coming out with new merch to sell at this point.
