Yes. This is album is a keeper. Great tunes and great drumming.Well the trumpet solo was inspired. I remember when
John disbanded and Kenny Aronoff was miffed. Best thing to happen to him. He moved on and has kicked ass ever since.
Kenny's drumming drives this album. No good bands without good drummers. Ever.

The progression and lyrics of the song are timeless.

Yes. I agree this is a fantastic record. I remember buying the CD at Tower Records in 1991 and enjoyed all the songs on the Album. Yes, Grunge was on it's way when "Whenever We Wanted" by JCM was released, but I still liked his album. It took awhile for me to accept the change in rock music in 1991-1992, but eventually I grew to like an extremely different sound in a band called Nirvana. However, I still remain a JCM fan.

The lead-off track to what I consider THE BEST album in JM's catalog (Human Wheels is #2 for me). The critics hated it in '91 and the whole industry was undergoing a rather tumultuous upheaval so it's not a big surprise at it's abysmal sales figures. Kenny Aronoff kills on this album from one end to the other. The edgy tenor of the material and the conviction of the performances are what really make this an important piece of this man's remarkable career.
This ain't the "let's sit around the campfire and sing Kum-by-ya" kind of stuff...which is an encapsulated appraisal of most of his previous recordings.
Johnny grew a set and it was a ballsy move to release "Whenever we Wanted" into the market at such a point in time.
With hindsight? Sadly, it's still as relevant today as it was 23 years ago.
It is what I consider to be the most "complete" album he has ever released. Focus, vision, and solid writing from one end to the other...all killer, NO filler.
Human Wheels is close but "French Shoes" (although it stands on musicianship) still falls short on the aspect of relevance.
    Off to other tracks...Peace, out!.

But Whenever we wanted and Into the great wide open sounded great to me and they are still.
