      StarSn1per nah the Seiko maintenance crew probably added whiskey to the gears of the robot that sets the dials. The robot was drunk so it properly lined up everything. The next morning the robot started production with a big hangover, angry at whomever “spiked” its gears and vowed to never properly align a dial again. The End.

    Watch geeks dont swim in the deep end of the pool. The 100m, dive rating, and screw down crown is a non factor. The new watch is superior in look, fit, finish, color, movement, and quality. And for the real price (not retail) its a steal.

      A bit late to comment but I agree 100%. The criticisms of the 5KX line at the time of launch were overblown by watch nerds. These are quite easy to mod too and even with a nice set of mods you still end up not spending too much money.

    I think it looks amazing. I love this shade of blue, the white chapter ring, these hands, the red tip of the seconds hand, the drilled lugs... There are some more really nice colorways besides this one. I don't mind the decrease in water resistant as I'm not planning on diving anytime soon, but I do mind the increase in price. I think that over all this watch isn't the flop people are sating it is. All that being said, I would like to have an SKX007 or 009 first. Great review!

    I love my blue SRPD52K1 on an Oyster-like bracelet. I don't care that it's not a diver, but I can understand why people get disappointed if they think it IS. It is not. It's a 100 m WR sports watch. I don't think Seiko calls it a diver's watch anywhere - people just do it anyway, because it LOOKS like one. It's not a diver's watch. Get one if you need one. Most of us don't. Just checked: Mine is perfectly aligned. Not the most precise watch at typically -15 seconds per day, but it's perfectly within spec.

    Great video , this new 100m is adequate enough for the all-inclusive vacation and you don’t have to mod one to find a dial combo you’ll like.
    In Canada you can find them for hair over 200 bucks. Not bad at all for a 4R35, nice lume, case and drilled lugs. You can’t have it every way. Theirs plenty of SKX’s to go around.

    • @SirStamford27
      @SirStamford27 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Dave Mendoza it's not. They're nice watches but they're not SKX's. To be a the new SKX it needs to be an entry level diver, that's it. We can trace it back, 6105, 6309, 7002, SKX. Doesn't matter what it looks like, just needs to be an entry level diver. If anything to me the new SKX's would be the current turtles.

    I'm fine with the 'downgrades' on this new model. Let's face it, no one today is actually going to dive with a mechanical watch. You can... but you won't. Modern day diver equipment makes dive watches redundant, if not obsolete, so the most water time any of these watches will get, is a few laps in a pool, or a frolic in shallow water on a picturesque beach. 100m of water resistance can more than handle both.
    Seiko gave us the features we wanted, at the sake of features we never use anyway. Fair trade imho

    Great video, you hit the nail on the head, the loss of the 200 depth is a deal breaker. I bought an SKX007 as a Diving watch, now it's an investment watch, in 2 or 3 years I'll be able to double my $215 investment. To me this represents what I saw go wrong with American Icon companies, they (the owners) started listening to the short term thinkers wanting short term profits. This thinking has killed our Automotive industry and a lot of other manufacturing based segments, look at Bulova, Hamilton etc. not to mention TV's, Pianos, tools and furniture. To compete the Japanese have excelled at long term planning and exquisite execution, but new generations come along and form over content becomes stylish, this is what I see here, a nice looking cheaply made watch with an iconic name.

    I disagree. This is not an "SKX 2", it's a Seiko 5. And a pretty damn nice one at that. But even if it was an SKX replacement I would still gladly take it. The lume is a bit of a shame yes but tell me: Who the hell actually used the 200m diver's water resistance anyway? And how many people would have been fine with "just" 100m of it? I'm going to say that not even 3% of the people that bought the SKX ever really used it to its full potential and in exchange for that nice but useless for most people feature you get a huge selection of styles, display case back, much more convenient non-screw-down crown, drilled lugs AND hacking and hand-winding movement. You all just throw away logic for the sake of having a cool text on the dial of your watch that you're never going to use, if you actually need that water resistance you have plenty of options but for the remaining 97% of us, this is a very nice trade-off.
    With this said, kinda like I don't want to give money to Game Freak because of the absolute mess that Sword and Shield are (nice games but I will not condone their behavior) I also don't want to give money to Seiko because of that damn chapter ring, beyond unacceptable after all these years. If I ever were to buy one I would buy it used, no doubt.

Why? Because sometimes heart is more important than cold logic. Not always though. To me, anyway, the benefits of the Seiko 5 far outweigh the cons and when someone says that the SKX is superior because of a feature they absolutely never used totally ignoring what the Seiko 5 brings to the table I can't help but feel a little sad. Seeing people stuck in their way of thinking while willingly ignoring facts even though it could bring them happiness... It's a sad sight.

      Maverick Bonato You obviously don’t get it. The SKX was a proper dive watch and I’m one of the people who actually went diving with my SKX. Obviously the SKX design was still important enough for Seiko to keep it alive. What I’ll never understand is why they just didn’t upgrade the SKX instead of putting out this SKX wannabe clone.
      Also, all dive watches must be certified according to ISO 6425. That means every watch of that series must undergo that test otherwise it can’t be sold as a dive watch, whereas of the normal watches only every tenth or twentieth watch will be checked and the test they go through is a joke in comparison to the ISO dive watch test. Ergo, a certified diver will always be a much tougher watch than anything else that isn’t dive certified, which is precisely the reason why that SKX clone is a joke. It’s also the reason why the SKX fans are upset because they’ve been begging for a hacking movement, a sapphire crystal, a ceramic bezel and maybe some new dial color choices, but no, instead they put out this farce!
      Lastly, I’m pretty sure your house is filled with shit that’s completely over engineered for your purposes. Just a few examples, your stereo is definitely louder than you need and when was the last time used max temperature on your oven and how often exactly do you drive top speed with your car? The list goes on and on and on.
      In conclusion, the SKX is a beloved and proper dive watch and the new Seiko 5 is a fashion watch that cashes in on the look of the SKX.

    I work for a Seiko retailer. We got about 20 of these in, in all the different versions. I was very excited at first, but upon looking at all of them, not one was properly aligned, and some had little issues like dings on the crown. I had a really nice modified Turtle that I sold to a friend and currently own a Solar Tuna as my “beater” watch. This new 5 is only similar to the SKX in aesthetics. It’s a nice Seiko automatic for someone just getting into watches that doesn’t want to break the bank. But I can think of much better in this price range. Mainly Orient , Spinnaker
    or Phoibos would fit the bill. That said, I’d go used at this price and get something even better. I just got a Bulova Devil Diver on sale, and despite its movement being “low rent” it’s a proper dive watch that ticks most boxes. Oh, and I really don’t like display case backs on divers. To me a display case back is a novelty. I’d much rather see a nice etched case back like Seiko does with the tsunami wave, or any other number of neat etchings from other companies. Ball does really nice case backs too. I’m not hating on this watch, but Seiko seem to be trying to play fashion forward over a “professional” tool watch. It’s not a bad idea, because after all they make PLENTY of legit dive watches for not much more money. This will sell very well for Seiko because 95% of the people who will buy these don’t care about us “watch obsessives” opinions.

    Seems pretty harsh. The only thing that bothers me with this watch is the misalignment of the chapter ring. I don't need 200m of water resistance. 100m is perfectly fine. Having to unscrew the crown to set the time/wind it is also unnecessary when you don't really benefit from the better water resistance. I like the look and I would buy a watch from this line-up.
    Nothing wrong with wanting a genuine dive watch water resistance certification and everything else if you think that's cool but personally I don't care much for features that are of no use to me. I'd buy a dive watch or a diver style watch because I like the look. I don't think there's any shame in that.

    Honestly, the only issue I have with these is the chapter ring being misaligned, there really is no excuse for that. Otherwise, I've seen a lot of whining that it lacks the diver specs of an SKX. In 99.9% of cases though, this is a pointless argument because none of these watches would ever be brought to a pressure depth anywhere near their rating. While the different in dive rating might seem to represent an overall reduction in quality, this is also superfluous, as anything besides ingress that would damage this would have also damaged an SKX (besides potentially a strike to the case back, but I'd bet that represents an exceedingly minor difference in potential risk).
    At the end of the day, the only people who are mad about this are the people who are invested, be it financially or emotionally, in the SKX. You are not the market for this watch. Seiko is perfectly happy for you to throw your arms up in the air and say "I'm buying an Orient instead!" because they own Orient. These are basically Seiko's take on making an attractive, inexpensive lineup in the vein of Swatch. And yes, these are a) still really not particularly expensive, and b) will go down in price over time as the market saturates
    Given that these also simply don't exist on the grey market at this point, the chapter ring issue should ultimately be a non-issue for quite a while. This is because, as it stands currently, the only place people should be getting these from is an authorized dealer, a company that has a business relationship with Seiko and will either be able to provide support in case a watch is defective or will be careful enough not to sell a watch with a chapter ring misalignment in the first place.

They had to know that was what the 007 partisans wanted - and they just said, "No" - and without a public explanation. Nobody at Seiko could come up with anything believable. • @ElliotDrinksWater
      @ElliotDrinksWater 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@bobklumpp8698 it's really more of an extra point of possible failure than an actual reduction in water resistance. In that sense your totally right, it's not as reliable but even then it's still going to be plenty water resistant for a long time. Some of Omega's Ploprof watches have exhibition casebacks and maintain a 1200m diver-certified water resistance, and the Planet Ocean has 600m wr, there's more examples besides omega but that's just what came to mind. Maybe at extreme depths it certainly matters but it's still possible to reliably achieve these levels of water resistance with a displayback. But when we're talking about the difference between 100m wr and diver-certified 200m wr on an inexpensive Seiko, the loss of wr in this instance is more likely due to the lack of a screw down crown and insufficient seals compared to the SKX as opposed to the displayback. As for Rolex I speculate it's more because their movements aren't really decorated at all. And I don't see anyone taking their Day-Date diving diving deep enough to matter. Sorry for the long post, I'm not trying to pick a fight or anything it's just something that I respectfully disagree with you on. That said though, I did enjoy the video.

    Losing 200 m water resistance in a price paid for adhering to the expectations of younger generations. This has been a perhaps too harsh criticism from an old watch collector. And I fully agree that a misaligned chapter ring is a quality issue which can't be defended at all. However, I believe that with 5KX Seiko is in fact returning to the initial rationale behind Seiko 5: it is meant to be the first mechanical watch (or at least someone's first Seiko watch). Generations change and their expectations change with them, too. Young people use smartwatches. These might have lots of smart features. but are short-lived. They generally have a 3-5 years service life and require charging every few days. If younger people are drawn to mechanical watches, this comes out of curiosity and fascination with precision mechanics. They want an attractive dial and a transparent caseback to enjoy the movement. Having a transparent caseback means you can't have 200m water resistance. A screw down crown makes no sense at all then! Besides, let's be honest about SKXs: the overwheming majority of SKX owners are desk divers. Sticking to water resistance of 200 m is ridiculous if you don't go scuba diving. New Seiko 5 is not primarily meant for old watch lovers. The 5KX series has a better movement, more attractive dials, drilled lugs for fast strap-changing and a transparent caseback. Everything SKXs, the respected tool watches, lacked. In fact, this new series can foster the interest of younger generations and prove very useful to the watchmaking industry. With this approach in mind I have recently bought one of the new models and I like it a lot. I'm surprised myself that it's a keeper. The design reminds me of some Spinnaker model which I somehow couldn't pull the trigger for. For swimming I still have a decent (but bulky and unwieldy) Prospex diver. For 'desk diving' and everyday use I wear and enjoy my Seiko 5KX. My piece is very accurate and keeps excellent time. The chapter ring is perfectly aligned, even the bezel seems to be well aligned. Maybe they have improved quality a bit (which might be a temporary change, I know). Cheers.
