Excellent basics tips. I am a newbie and already hooked 😄. Love your mini potted Phal = 1 flower color = Pot in Pot. Makes the plants non-flowering time look so pretty. Think I'll try that when I get a few new ones.
Susan Loe Josh does your greenhouse have air vents in top of greenhouse? My 10 by 12 greenhouse covered with green fiberglass gets very hot, I'm trying find way to cool it down more
Yes. I have an exhaust vent at the top and I also remove the plastic a little at the other gable end of the greenhouse. Summer time gets HOT and our ‘chids need to stay moderately warm.
Foot candles are a measurement for how strong light is. Most measure in foot candles. Some also use Lumens. Full summer sun is around 10k-11k FC’s (foot candles). I have a light meter I bought off amazon that tells me how much light I have in all parts of The Orchid Den.
I have a whole video on mounting. When mounting plants you have to water more often though. Daily watering and sometimes twice a day In very hot months.
@@TheOrchidDen Thank you for answering me, I have my philenopsis in pots, but every season I lose 2 or 3 plants, because of fungus or bacteria, I really don't know, even though I'm very meticulous with the water and their care, I grow them outside, I have no orquids inside, Do you think for me could work better if I mount them, as they are outside, thanks.
@@nellyjag1315 why are you losing plants? Root rot? Cold? We need more info to help you. Media, pot, light, watering habits, how are you watering, soak, with hose? All these details help to diagnose your issues.
@@TheOrchidDen Well the last one had a black circle in one of its leave and spread out super quickly, I had it in a basket with a media of bark, clay balls and a little bit of spangmun, I live in Sarasota Florida, so we have good weather for them, they are outside with a shade of 50%, I just water them when the media is dry and I use a hose to water them, honestly I'm just about to quick on them, I have dendrobium, Cattleyas, Oncidium, brassalovas and they are just fine, but not the philenopsis.
Crown rot starts in the crown at the bas of the leaf apex. The the leaves start flopping over from the middle out. Once this happens the plant will eventually die or sometime it will put out a new growth and you’ll have to start all over.
I like it. Good info. That one with all the leaves is impressive...and those roots, wow! I would love to have a greenhouse like that one of these days. I’m in Indiana, so I would need one a little more winter-proof.
Hey josh, this Sari from Malaysia,, thanks for this vid, ive been trying my luck to keep orchids since last year,, but then i ended up doin the water culture and so far,, it works for me,, but as for now,, i wanted to try the one with a media.. i only have charcoal, spagnomoss and coconut husk/chunks available here, so, are these gonna be enough?? hope you reply Josh, since i wanna vlog it on my channel as well. thanks.
One major thing to keep in mind is whenever you buy a plant try and keep it in the same or similar media that it’s already established in. If you switch it up the roots will not be acclimated to it and can rot or die back. The plant will then suffer. You can plant in a coco husk, charcoal mix, or just use plain sphagnum moss. Hope this helps!! Happy growing!!
Awesome video on basics.
I’d love to grow orchids they’re totally awesome, beautiful flowers.
Thanks for sharing.
This is nuts. I'm always grumpy until I see a plant or a pet. 🤪

Can you please explain foot candles.

The Orchid Den so the meter that you use measures in foot candles? Is there another way to gage light levels without this type of device?
I have a question, what about philenopsis mounted in pieces of wood or trees

@@nellyjag1315 maybe they’re drying out too fast? Most Phals like to stay moist.
Did you say bleach to get rid of fungus?
does this fungus your talked about start as small yellow areas then the black area forms

Hi Joshua! Was wondering if you will show in a video how to make the 2% bleach solution.
Jianrui Mei I just add 20mL of chlorine to 1000mL of rainwater
Thank you! I will try to make that.

Do you dilute the peroxide water?
Sandra O never dilute the hydrogen peroxide. Always dilute the bleach though.
