  • Discovery and Excavation in Scotland (DES) is Archaeology Scotland’s journal and the only one which provides comprehensive coverage of, and insight into, archaeological fieldwork and research currently being conducted across Scotland. From fieldwork undertaken by commercial units and archaeologists, to projects by local societies, university departments, community groups and independent archaeologists, DES contains reports spanning all time periods and locations, presenting results obtained from a range of archaeological techniques and approaches. It also includes an annual roundup of radiocarbon dates undertaken on National Museums Scotland items, written by NMS staff, and has presented a roundup of DNA work on human remains in Scotland. Historic Environment Scotland submit review chapters on their work in Survey and Recording; Archiving; and Designations each year, and DES also contains a list of the names and thesis titles of students working on Scottish archaeology topics. DES is an unrivalled and unique resource that successfully brings together information on archaeological work undertaken across the whole of Scotland, enabling people to learn about new and ongoing work as it happens.
Each year Canmore (Historic Environment Scotland’s online catalogue of Scotland’s archaeology, buildings, industrial and maritime heritage) is updated with the previous year’s DES entries, thereby maintaining a permanent, searchable record of Scotland’s archaeological discoveries. DES therefore helps collate knowledge and expertise to aid the understanding of Scotland’s past.
Launched each year at the Archaeological Research in Progress conference (ARP), which is organised by Archaeology Scotland and the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. The journal is only available to Archaeology Scotland members who choose enhanced membership.
