Leading with the head is just a big a factor as not tackling low enough in the context of injuries. The defender was obviously preparing for a contact that didnt take account of the push which both lowered and accelerated the attacker, resulting in him not being as prepared for the impact either because of the push. The ref called it correctly per the rules of the game but its disappointing it results in a card. I know its for the good of the game and the players but perhaps a system that refers an incident to a post match review with match bans as a possible penalty could be just as effective while retaining cards for more serious and obvious offences on the pitch. Currently one players offence can punish the whole team and significantly effect the outcome of the match. Thats not good for the game either.
@johanna walsh players will just have to adjust to the new way the game is being refereed. With all that is going on outside the game with Steve Thompson et al, I think they are right to start to be more harsh with players making contact to the head. None of us like getting one round the head when we play and expect the bloke who did it to go. Why would it be any different for professional players?
Sorry but the yellow card at 1:05 is ridiculous... You can clearly see the teammate of the ball carrier pushing him down in to the tackle, that's why the contact is with the head...hes falling down!
The tackler was already too high. Ref took the push into account and it went from red to yellow. Correct decision. Similar to the decision in the other direction late in the game.
Even as Wasps fan, i'm glad to see Leicester coming back slowly but surely ! They've made some significant progress for a couple weeks now. However the highlight video doesn't show the poor decision regarding the first disallowed try for the Irish : Zack Henry was clearly beaten , there was no way he could have tackled even without the Irish player's obstruction. Not the mention the fact that referees are too harsh when it comes to tackle, it's almost as if players won't be allowed to touch each other very soon, it's pathetic...
Lot of referees seem to be confusing shoulder to shoulder tackles or shoulder to upper chest with shoulder to head. Just because the attacking player’s head rocks, does not mean there was contact with the head. @4:50 just completely clearly not to the head. Actual connection is probably middle chest and then rides up, but by that point all the force has gone through the chest. If the chest is too high, make a law, don’t send people off for playing within them. Just knee jerk refereeing to seeing a head rock
@@newt2083 absolutely agree with the Red, a couple of the yellows seemed a bit harsh. What I liked was how Barnes makes it clear cut with his communication with the TMO of the rationale of his decision, not every referee (cough cough French referees) does this so that’s refreshing. I don’t disagree with it, they’re trying to set a deterrent so players are forced to change their technique. They’re dishing out lots of cards now but if players buy into it then the number of cards given should naturally decrease.
Ahhhh, the steady stream of cries of "that was a yellow card? Rugby has gone soft!" How about players tackle properly? Tackling is taught at all age levels to be from the waist down. Not shoulders down. Tackling high does nothing other that risk injuring a player who happens to slightly dip their head. Remove the choke tackle from rugby and you solve a lot of the problems - there is little incentive to tackle high as you can't get a turnover from holding a player up.
The reason they tackle 'high' is to prevent the offload. If they tackeled like everyones taught at an early age then all you need is enough support players, which they could easily train to do, and you'd get a try nearly every attack. Then the game would be really boring and predictable to watch.
Sometimes it's hard to avoid contact with the head at the pace that the modern game is played at - I think the cards should only be given for malicious intent
Yellow card on London Irish 6 was just f--king ridiculous. It's going to get where players get scared to tackle at all because - oh shit - the other guy might hit my shoulder with his head and I end up getting sent off the field. Northern hemisphere refs showing once again how ridiculously pathetic they are.
If you thought these cards were soft (excluding that Red for obvious reasons), you should see the red card in the Wasps Gloucester match! The game is making a bad move from process based decisions to outcome based decisions..

I know it's all about the awareness of head injury and an attachment to protect the player. But how it's playing out at the moment it's becoming impossible for a defender to perform an effective tackle without getting penalised. It will get to the point where 'to stay low in the tackle' they will have to lay on the floor in the hopes they will trip over them, but even then tripping is against the laws too.
@@danielallmon2173 Very well said on the points system. But I like to add that with a penalty granting 1-2 points teams may be inclined more to infringe in their own 22 to prevent opposition scoring tries. May be 3 points for penalties inside the 22 and 1 or 2 points outside the 22.

Simple answer is don't foul. Wayne Barnes has had a really good game there and him and his team got the cards spot on
Exactly. The players need to change their technique or they'll keep losing games as a result of their own dangerous play.

1. Aim your head at a tacklers shoulder.
2. Watch him get a red.
