Serbia - Uncovering Europe's MOST CONTROVERSIAL Country! 🇷🇸

  • Travel Documentary, Serbia/Belgrade 2024. 🇷🇸 Serbia - the epicenter of former Yugoslavia - is perhaps Europe’s most controversial country and our first time there was NOTHING LIKE WE EXPECTED or were told! Join us as we break through the stereotypes and explore the real Serbia.
We are in Belgrade, Serbia’s capital, to find out what this Balkan nation is truly like. Along the way, we discover personal stories and authentic perspectives from Serbians. A graffiti saying "When the army returns to Kosovo" expresses the unresolved tensions since Kosovo’s declaration of independence in 2008, a move Serbia can’t accept as it considers Kosovo as part of its territory. "Don't trust the media!" one local tells us, encouraging us to see Serbia through the eyes of its people and make up our own minds.
Serbia’s deep ties with Russia, rooted in shared history, culture, and religion, are hard to miss. Outside the Church of Saint Sava, a symbol of Serbia’s Orthodox faith, we spot slogans like "Go Russia, go!". Yet Serbia is pursuing EU membership and is cautiously balancing its relations with both East and West.
But Serbia isn’t all about politics. We explore its laid-back side in Tasmajdan Park, its rich food scene in lively Skadarlija, its love for sports like boxing, tennis and basketball - where global stars such as Novak Djokovic and Nikola Jokić were born - and we meet very welcoming locals. From street musicians to a former military officer to beautiful Serbian ladies … Serbia’s true charm lies in its people, revealing a softer side behind its tough reputation!
As we visit Belgrade’s landmarks - from the historic Belgrade Fortress to the modern Belgrade Waterfront to the scars of the NATO bombings in 1999, we witness how this city and its people carry the weight of their history while looking toward the future. "Serbia is free to upgrade yourself,“ a Russian expat tells us, reflecting on the freedom he has found here.

    👩🏼🧔🏻 WHO ARE WE?
Hello! We're Nicole from Austria/Germany and Roberto from Switzerland/Italy! We believe that traveling is more than just sightseeing! When we travel, we look for spontaneous and AUTHENTIC ENCOUNTERS with THE LOCAL LIFE (and local people of all backgrounds) in other cultures, the country (nature, villages, cities) and the food. Our travels are about uncovering the REAL & UNSCRIPTED LIFE in each destination, with all its sunny & shady sides! We try to find out what really makes each country unique, beyond the postcard-perfect images.
Thank you for being a cherished part of this journey! It means everything to us.

Hi people, it's Milan from the beginning of the video. First of all, I would like to thank Nicole and Roberto for making this video about our country (although you could make it without me on the video thumbnail :D) I can see the video is already viral so let's take an opportunity and not spread the hate but speak a good word about our country and our nation. The world will always see us as a CONTROVERSIAL country because we are a proud, small Orthodox country, with a great history, that stood against the greatest intruders like the Ottomans and NATO. Nicole and I talked a lot about the wars in Krajina, Republika Srpska, Kosovo, and Ukraine but I asked her not to put that part in this video because it would make it change its purpose.
Nicole and Roberto, I wish you all the best! You are always very welcome in Serbia!

We’re so grateful for the warmth and kindness you gave us while filming, and for your openness in our conversations! Serbia is an amazing country. And it’s people like YOU who make Serbia so special, and we hope the world will see Serbia's inner and outer beauty through this video! Thank you again, Milan. We can’t wait to come back to Serbia, and you’ll always have friends in us! Lots of love, Nicole & Roberto 🫶🇷🇸

don't lie. you don't know anything about us. you will never meet us. Did your friends tell you about the mass grave near Belgrade? 800 Albanians were killed in it. Did they tell you about how we shelled Dubrovnik in the 90s of the last century? did they tell you how many Albanians we expelled from Kosovo 25 years ago. you don't know anything about Serbs. Serbs are not only good food. tourists try good food, see happiness in a restaurant, and think that people are like that. otherwise, the food is not ours. Serbian food is actually Turkish food or the food of another Asian nation, and the Turks brought us that food

Proud of what. Americans are proud too and look where that got them too. I am Serbian and I won't allow a proud state of mind to alter my judgment and neither should you, so stay humble. The proud man wants to be praised, petted, honored. The very thing he wants, he loses the admiration of others. Pride as hard as it is to see is really at the center of all sin.

Malagurski's Weight of Chains documentary (among other things) explains well that NATO aggression had nothing to do with "protecting" Albanian minority, but with the NATO/US need to enforce neoliberal economic system onto entire EU/West Europe. Creating a vassal state is just a temporary result of it. Under international law (UNSCR 1244), Kosovo and Metohia is still part of Serbia (with undetermined future status). Western media, of course, will not tell you that.

The fundamental difference is that Germans had reached catharsis and showed regret for Nazi war crimes in very early stages of post WW2. All kind of Holocaust denial and wearing Nazi symbols is forbidden by the law in Germany. And today Germany is one of the most powerful European countries with educated, civilized people. Serbs, on the other hand, for the most part, still praise their war criminals as heroes and deny genocide and severe war crimes against humanity that their regime committed in the region.

Just a little correction. Serbia (snd Montenegro at the time) was not bombed because of supposed Milošević's violence on Kosovo, but because NATO wanted to rip off that piece of land in order to establish a military base. This country, much like Ukraine, sits on the border between East and West and both sides are fighting to move that border at their preferable side. We just happen to suffer that conflict for centuries while Shiptars kill people, burn our houses and churches at Kosovo, and Milošević just happened to be the president at the time. And this is the simplest way to describe the truth to people who base their kniwledge on the one-sided foreign media reports.

When good deal of Europe was still frozen, people were building cities here. We ae talking 4000-7000 BC, not only Serbs, but, for Example Belgrade fortress was originally a Celtic settlement called Singidunum (Kalemegdan is just recent Ottoman name, means "Gate field"). When Tolkien imagined Minas Tirith in Lord of the Rings, it also meant White City, what Beograd (Beo Grad) means. In more recent history, early middle ages, Sass migrated to Serbia for their mining skills and even Vikings were hired as mercenaries, and formed some settlements in today's Greece. Only modern history of Serbia becomes with Nemanjic dynasty, but same area also produced Alexander the Great, Constantine the Great... at one point, Romean/Byzantian emperor Andronico Paleologos gave his 5 year old daughter Simonida in marriage to Serbian king Milutin, who was about to take over whole Thessalonica region, grandfather of future tzar Dusan. Of course, that marriage was never consumed and she spent days in monastery, doing good deeds and you can see her now as on frescos in churches, as she became a saint. That was 1299, Then came Ottomans/Turks, Austrians, Germans. NATO .... We stay. We don't need EU. We do have a sense that we are THE Europe, EU is a just a fit that will pass. Belgrade is one of the oldest cities in Europe, it was destroyed over 40 times and rebuilt itself, and is still kicking. Name any other city with similar history.

But just as you said he was founder of Nemanjic dinasty which is indeed the most powerful serbian medieval family, under which Serbia reached its peak in medieval times. While you were in Tasmajdan Park, you missed a small monument dedicated to all the children who died in the NATO bombing of Serbia. On the monument it says "We were just children" and there is a statue of a little girl, Milica Rakic. She was three years old when she died in her father's arms. The monument personifies all children who died in the NATO bombing. I am sorry you missed that detail, intentionally or not.

Serbs have no problem whatsoever with what you believe, what your preferences are, your ethnicity, skin color, nationality, religion, or anything else. However, when someone starts rubbing that in their faces, trying to impose their values over theirs, it is a huge no-no. Serbs are probably the fiercest fighters for freedom and personal choices on the planet.
They have "inat," and it is far deeper than spite. For example, they would work directly to their own demise if that would also hurt and bring down those who impose their will over them.

I was in Budapest with my wife, last year, and we were brutaly bullied by Hungary check point on airport, they are trying to make a police arrest (totally unnecessary).... When a "lady" on check point heard me talking to my wife, he exstract my wife, bulling her, talking to take off her shoes, trying to find BOMB in new shoes, (she is lying, obviously, it's bad theatre explanation,), my wife, was forced to walk without shoes on dirty floor for 80 meters, we were in shock, but torture and provoking movement continues, ..than in passport control punct, officer looking few minutes in our passport and after that,he gave to me our passports, I said: "Thanks", ...he looked at me with hate, and don't give us our passport, take a looking again for few minutes.I whispered to my wife : "Be quiet, they are trying to arrest us. In a glass,I didn't see anybody, who could witnessing a provocative, rude behaviour of officer. ...and then I remembered that when we entered in this large room, girl ,who was in the entrance in this giant room closed the entrance with leash, After us...now I was terrified... after few minutes, officer gave to us passports again..but... it's not finished yet our bullying 😞....we were going to gate, before our fly... after 5 minutes,we lost internet connection... only I and my wife, ...I see other people had regular connection....( How is it possible....Well I will explain to you... When you conect to the free WiFi on airport they are asking for your name and surname, and then they give you permission....I was terrified again...We were quite the rest of time. When we arrived to Belgrade,I was trying to complain to airport site, But it wasn't possible, because they insisted for my bank account "because, ...(Some stupid explanation).Off course,I refused so.... It's unfortunately true....But, Jews from Israel has much more brutal action than us, they treated tham like 1944 act in Budapest.with police officers and police dog Belgian Malinoa...etc... Conclusion: We will never go in Hungary again,never.... Sorry, but I had needed to say somebody ours "Hungary holiday"😢

NATO bombed Serbia to prevent Milosevic's violence in Kosovo. This is because NATO is a humanitarian organization whose main task is to spread peace and love on the planet. And he called that sprinkling of Serbia with bombs with depleted uranium "Merciful Angel". For your information, the Western combined military formations plowed Serbia with bombs in the first world war, and in the second world war, even more than the Germans, the British "allied" bombers targeted only densely populated civilian places, and as a continuation of all that, they did the same. 1999 when the ratio of military forces was 640:1.

    • @x3merx3mer
      @x3merx3mer 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

They didn't plow us in 1999 nor they targeted densely populated civilian places. There were a few occasions and I almost got killed in one (cluster bombing of a fruit market in Nis), but that won't stop me from admitting that 99% of the targets were military targets. If they truly wanted to plow us, with 640:1 ratio and their capabilities, the whole country would be an empty field now. You can't stop misinformation with another misinformation.

The Bosnian Muslims and the Mujahideen had a scorched-earth policy on the Serbian villages. The also fought the Croats in the middle of the war - the Croat-Muslim war - which had some of the most intense fighting of the war. The Bosnian Muslims had the largest army in BiH during that war, outnumbering the Serb forces by 4 times or more. There was also different factions of Bosnian Muslims fighting each other, such as Fikret Abdic (a moderate Muslim who had actually won Bosnia's presidential election before the war, but agreed to some kind of deal with Alija Izetbegovic) and Alija Izetbegovic. And then Croatia had 10s of thousands of troops in BiH during the entire war and still had some there months after Dayton. The media downplayed what the Bosnian Muslims did to Serbs and Croats. A Scottish mercenary, John MacPhee, who fought on the Croat side against Serbs and Bosnian Muslims (and wrote about it in his book "The Silent Cry") was most shocked at what he witnessed Bosnian Muslims do to Croats - they would deliberately mutilated them and even mutilated animals. He said he didn't see such hate even in Afghanistan and Chechnya.

    • @mothidentifier

The only genocide committed in the Balkans was ON Serbs jointly by Germans, Croats, Bosnians and Albanians.
They had to pay Germany to lobby and blackmail other countries to vote for that genocide resolution. It's all bribery so that they can stick the label onto Serbs.
Germany, that committed numerous genocides on Serbs over past 100 years.
      What a farce.

@@morismahmutovic There are Bosnian Muslims in Banja Luka today. 1991 was before the war officially started, but Bosnian Muslims and Croats were sometimes leaving places before the wars started, as the were warned or ordered to leave by their leadership.
There were also many people who left before or early in the war expecting it to be temporary.
It is nice that you get along with Serbs. The breakup of Yugoslavia was wanted by certain NATO countries - mainly US, UK and Germany. They were advising and working with separatists BEFORE the wars started. They also backed Tudjman and Izetbegovic who both were long time criminals who expressed fascistic plans in their books. Tudjman's "Wastelands" and Alija's "Islamic Declarations".
Tudjman was involved in the violent Croatian Spring in the early 1970's and Alija was seeking help from Islamic groups, including terrorist groups in 1983 against Yugoslavia. He was sentenced to 13 or 14 years but got out in 6 and he and the others who were jailed with him led the country to war. US was backing the troublemakers as a recipe to break Yugoslavia into ethnically pure or divided statelets to be easier to absorb into NATO and the EU and also to dictate to them. Yugoslavia was a strong competitor in the construction and defense industries and would get contracts over Germany and other western countries.

Serbia is not controversial. Maybe from your point of view. It is the last fully free country in Europe that neither the West nor the East have been able to fully contain and subjugate. We are tough people who have been through a lot, who value freedom above all else, who cannot be contained or placed in a box (like the EU, or any kind of group). We are very friendly and welcoming, we are still normal (no woke crap). A country where men are still men, and women are still women. A country full of surprises and contrasts. A country that is following its own path. We want to cooperate with everyone, but we don't want to be anyone's toy, slave, or colony. That is the difference between us and other European peoples who had given up and fallen into the mainstream, becoming America's puppets. Serbia is a place which has much more individual freedoms than the West, and is safer than most Western countries. We are a proud nation. Everyone is welcome with good intentions. But please, drop your prejudice at the border, open up your mind, and explore this truly unique country in Europe.

Nowadays we're occupied by domestic traitors and facing a series of setbacks, but our spirit won't be broken. Never doubt our will to endure pressure and pursue national goals. Call that controversial, but that's why I love this country. It just never gives up.

Ако је Србија контроверзна зато што неће у НАТО који је бомбардовао и отео територију,онда хвала,а у свему другом је тзв. колективни запад нечувено контроверзан и то ће схватити тек када осете шта значи бити слободан ,бити само свој.

Video would be amazing if there was no political statements, false ones. Serbia was attacked ILLEGALLY. It was UNPROVOKED and on Serbian territories. Nobody else was attacked except Serbia. Facts are not debatable.. UN, international law, common sense was against it, all documents and agreements on Serbian side.
It's like if we say tram ride is debatable 😂
    No it's not. It's uncomfortable. I don't like it but it's a fact.
I'm sure it was not a bad intentions. More like you believed your media instead of fact check.

the truth is it is ongoing protestant, LGBT and Islamic conspiracy against holy serbian nation... they are well aware Kosovo is holy serbian land, where Christianity began, even written in Bible, so they defile it with LGBT troops who hold gay orgies. Islamic world supports it because Qatar Bahrain Saudi Arabia all have a problem with obesity and kidney disease, the sheikhs are getting sick, and need reliable supply of kidneys from Albanian criminals... it's great calamity against heavenly people who respect minorities but always persecuted and targets of hate for no reason.

We would like to be proud of our country but unfortunately, Serbia IS controversial country from inside, not for reasons of outer perception. Outer perception of us is less important.
