I have looked at your other videos, and they are all good. However, in my humble opinion, this one gives me the best understand of what's involved in mastering the jig strum. The use of the metronome is key. I think. The "da-didley dum" helps too. One thing that alludes me is how to get a quality tone while doing this strum. Yours is crystal clear. Mine has a lot thuds instead of notes. Yes I know more practice, or is there a magic ingredient. Thanks for the video. Very useful, Frank K (USA)
Thanks Frank! You could try loosening your wrist more- maybe flap it about before you start strumming as if you're shaking water off your hands. It looks daft but it's a good warm-up and helps your strumming become more fluid!
Thanks to you, this is the day that an adventurous curiosity into this genre of music led me back to what's really important- using a metronome.Somehow, I've been playing for nearly five years and not made use of the metronome that I had(needless to say, I suck at keeping up pace in playing). It recently got stolen, and now i shall make use of the online source you just referred to .Seeing the seriousness of my personal music-learning situation, I paused this video just to check out"metronome online".At time of writing, I haven't actually used the metronome there yet, but the introductory stuff I've read in the last couple of hours has been useful. Thanks , and now I will finish watch this video..
I was looking for some celtic strumming patterns and searching on-line for instruction -- you broke the rhythm down in steps and made it very easy to learn. Thank you!
Thats for the video. That metronome site came in very handyy. Ive been trying to get into doing more reels on the guitar as i really enjoy playing them. Im gonna start looking for ideal chords for use in these jigs next. I know all the basic minor and major chords. So im just gonna play around with those for now. Cheers man
No problem! If you have a look on folkfriend.co.uk/videos/ there are loads of videos about how to pick chords, and also free playalongs with on screen chords karaoke style :). Best of luck!
Rreally enjoyed that.Thanks.Any chance you could put a diagram of the down up strums on the wall while you playing. Also i trying to figure out a good strum pattern for Courtin in the kitchen but the ones ive tried seem to be getting in thr way rather than accompanying the song.Ta
Yes, I quite often fill in the extra quaver like that. I talk about it further in my most recent Folky Fridays livestream which I've linked below. I have also linked another of my videos in which I demonstrate an alternative jig pattern which I like to use for rhythmic variation. Hope they're helpful and best of luck with your playing! th-cam.com/video/6BRIrSM5jAI/w-d-xo.html&lc=Ugx0L6CHSwk77t4sfaV4AaABAg&feature=em-comments (sorry the video is unsynced in parts of this one- I had a connectivity issue that day which will be fixed from the next live stream :) ) th-cam.com/video/vj7JjiDWXlk/w-d-xo.html
3/4 time is MUCH slower and has a very definite accent on the 1. ONE two three ONE two three.... 6/8 is much quicker and has the main accent on the 1 at the start of each bar so sounds more like "diddly diddly" or "rashers and sausages". You would never find a 3/4 tune played anywhere near as fast as a jig. Hope that helps!
Hey comrade!!! you looks like the vocals of alestorm!!!! and that sound amazing!!! i will learn it right now! thank you very much fellow! its remeber me to the rohirims! lml
Yes! Ideally you want something nice and bassy. There are lots of good dreadnaughts out there, if you're on a budget I'd say Tanglewood or LAG are about the best options. If you're looking for an acoustic I'm actually selling a beautiful Fairclough on eBay atm ;). It's brand new, an ex - display one from a shop near mine which closed down recently--lovely tone (I was going to keep it for myself but I want an electro-acoustic really). Link here: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Brand-New-Fairclough-Thyme-Acoustic-Guitar-with-built-in-digital-tuner-ex-displ/312987453485?hash=item48df81882d:g:Q30AAOSwr3heLcPo Failing that my main tip would be go to a shop and try as many as possible until you find one that feels right to you. Ask them to set the neck/string action as low as possible. Lots of good guitar shops will include neck setup in the cost if it's a new instrument. Happy hunting!
Hi. I am Bobi from UK. I really like this syle and want to learn. Do you have TAB for the solo part in the beginning of the video? I am playin by ear but not the exact same. Bobi

I've been finding that using an upstroke for the second strum is very effective as well. Like - down up down

Is that D Dudu for one measure or do I double that for one measure?
Finale Guitar Studio
Thank you! I was interested in your e-book but couldn’t find your website. How does one order it?
It sounds the same as 3/4 time. Seems like I should play it twice in one measure.
Sorry, only just seen this comment! You can buy my ebook here: finaleguitar.co.uk/product/backing-guitar-techniques-for-celtic-traditional-music/

Can you give a few examples of a good guitar for strumming traditional music.
