Melinda is such a sweet person. I descend from the Cooper, Clark Brooks. The Cooper and Clark migrated from the NC/SC boarder into western NC. Clarks claimed Portuguese, but records mention the settlers as Croatan. One of our Brooks line traveled east to Guilford and Robeson Co and intermarried with the Tuscarora Brooks, Deese, Locklear families. My Brooks cousin was enumerated as Indian/Native American. Some identify as Lumbee and others as Tuscarora. Those of us that stayed west and went farther west dissolved into the black, other native tribes and white communities.
Love this symposium - kudos to this lovely woman! I like how she explains how Lumbee has a possible mixture of African American and not just English. I try to explain this to relatives. Unfortunately, some Lumbees do not want to hear that. With that being said, it still does not take away the FACT that we are still Lumbee as the briefer explains. I think this video should be played at the Lumbee Cultural Class for those getting their Lumbee Cards. The culture class left out the fact that we haveva mixture of african american just as english. I am from the Chavis, Burnett, Locklear, Oxendine, Cummings, etc. bloodline. My grandfather being Preston Chavis who wrote Memories of a Lumbee Native American Boy. His DNA has been a key to Lumbee, African American and English descendants to unlocking their history. I will be sure to purchase her book - well said ma'am❤️
