As a Spaniard, and not having a particular interest in British politics, all I can say is that this is the best comedy I have ever enjoyed. Actors are brilliant and so are the scripts, a wonderful job indeed.

I was going through some of the episodes for the first time; in a sense, it is nice to know that the world has not changed that much. Somewhat reassuring but also saddening that, in reality, nothing has fundamentally changed.

The summary of newspaper readers generally is actually very good. You can infer the Brexit position of each of them from the description given, as an example. At the moment, the average Telegraph reader is convinced that the EU is running the country at the moment, and the courts have no power. Until the supreme court reaches a finding, of course, then they have too much power.

The best sit coms were written in the 70's and 80's. The Good Life, Some mothers do 'av em, Faulty Towers, Rising Damp, Porridge, Dad's Army, Allo Allo, The Young Ones, Blackadder, House of Cards.
After this things weren't the same. Most comedy now thinks too hard about not wanting to offend one group of people. Humour now is far too pc for its own good.

It was said at the time that the Australian Prime Minister and the head of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet watched it together, both laughing, but at different lines. It also speaks of the times that they were able to set aside half an hour to do that. Setting aside half an hour is something that should be done more often by people who want to keep perspective, taking themselves at least a little bit less seriously than they take life.

This comedy series reached stratospheric heights. As funny and politically relevant then as now. i.e Boris and Donald.

    • @nathanmahloch3318
      @nathanmahloch3318 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Boris yes but every prime minister labor or tory does it Tony Blair or Boris. The difference that Donald didnt go through the normal jobs or politcal positions before running. Although he was public about politics for decades as a tv star and was a card carrying democrat for 35 years that donated money to pro abortion causes. Then ran as a republican who was anti abortion. So he got the idea of politcs right from the start. Plus our system is slightly diffrent than the UK's even if you can apply yes minister to it. Our founding fathers came from Britian and didnt trust goverment and hated goverment doing anything but in emergency. Kind of 101 for why the reveloution was fought agianst the british king. So they tried to form such a govemrnet that would never get any thing done besdies in emergency. And one reason out of about ten for the 2nd amendment was to protect private citizens from corrupt goverments taking away private citizens rights. So our founding fathers created goverment that has not one but two parliments (and a president and a supreme court) the senate and the house to make it even less likely any thing gets done unless of emergency. We have two prime ministers and a president. The two prime ministers are the Speaker of the House (Nancy Pelosi) and the Senate majority leader (Mitch Mcconell) Both are basically prime ministers. And then they can screw up anything a president ever wants to do. And block anything the other parliment/prime minister wants to do. And the supreme court can reject anything they want to do together. And even state courts can reject executive orders from the president. So the goverment can barely get anything done so it wont ruin the country. But Trumps whole thing is we should publicaly say all the things yes minister exposes about goverments to the public in public speeches for everyone to know. And then still contiue to do the same things usa goverments have done for decades that yes prime minister exposes while he tells you that he is doing those things. Which in reality many of the actions trump takes are no diffrent than Obamas or what Hilary Clintons wouldve been. The diffrence is Clinton wouldve made the right speeches and covered up things that happen in goverment that yes prime minister exposes while trump wants to tell everybody about them. And the media spin of a Trump action is startkely negative while the media reaction to the same action taken by Hiliary woulve been posotive. Because Trump is willing to expose the game and that terryfies the media so they spin it. And while Biden will take similar actions to trump. His speeches will go back to flat out cover ups and will pretend that after doing the same action he will spin it to be an anti trump position. And when he does the 1 out of 10 actions that are diffrent than trump he will procalim how diffrent he is to trump. While in reality its the same idea just said in a diffrent way.

Yes Minister is more documentary than comedy. It's also a great example of how comedy isn't just about the great writing, it's about serendipitous coming together of exactly the right cast, with exactly the right chemistry to make the whole thing iconic. This was demonstrated by the attempted revival a couple of years ago. Same writers, mostly the same jokes, but the cast just couldn't pull it together and it fell flat on its face.

As the citizen of a former british colony, i'd say the people who inherited my country from the brits are following in their footsteps down to the last letter, often by being exponentially more incompetant than the british civil service is and driven by a far more uneducated and dogma driven class of politicians some of whom wouldnt even qualify for a job within the service even after accounting for minimum requirements and reservation based relaxations, something i doubt the the brits would ever get themselves into. Aside from Singapore and Malaysia no other former british colony has been able to reform its bureaucracy to make it competant or functional let alone efficient.

I love both Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister.
As a Canadian, one of the many things I love about the show is it parallels the Canadian, as
well as the Australian and New Zealand, system of government which is based on the
    British Parliamentary system.
Canada has a House of Commons, the British have a House Commons.
Canada has an appointed Senate, the British have an appointed House of Lords.
You can take every scenario on that show and superimpose it on a Canadian government
    scenario.
    There's no difference.
    It's brilliant.

There should be a Yes Minister's old watchers club ....we might have a good laugh and would be funnier than most and very congenial to civilised living!...W.hen all is said and done , taking into account the likely outcomes which can be reasonably expected to arise , given the contingencies on which such projects may be based from time to time and having regard to the law which had it's genesis in the corporate legislation of the early 1900s further amplified by the various acts passed by parliament in the early post war years and given specific definition where necessary in the various ministerial orders which were necessitated by our entry in to the EU which , as we know was then referred to as the EEC, it can be reasonably inferred that on balance given the hostility likely to arise from the various vested interests , that at this time any course of action which can be evaluated by the public as a complete failure would be best avoided in view of the forthcoming by-election in Greater Middling Piddle by the sea. Is that a no?
