The casualness of it all just feels so weird. When thinking of such old video I usually associate everyone with having such a stiff upper lip so to speak. But here they are laughing and playing along ahead of the Christmas season, and it makes it feel so much more real as a result.
He suffered from clinical depression and congestive heart failure. His 16-year-old son died in 1924 and he never recovered from it. Hevused to be very hard-working engaged and active. After his son died he became very sleepy, depressed, angry, ill tempered, and difficult. He died less than four years after leaving office.
@@robertyates9500 That's sad, I actually think Coolidge was autistic due to his "silent" persona and excessive need for sleep. He just seems kind of awkward in these films and I don't think it's just from being stoic New England farm stock, though it may well be.
At first I thought ol' Silent Cal wasn't even going to respond to Santa after the jovial gift-giver presented the president with seeds from Iceland but after what appeared to be a slight edit, Mr. Coolidge did, in characteristically quite formal fashion. I'd heard the Republican's voice in other film clips but had forgotten the sound of its exact nature, which, of course, is the New England accent. Reagan always claimed that Coolidge was his favorite president, due, primarily, I think, to the Plymouth Notch, Vt. native's hands-off approach to government. For those who are surprised by Coolidge's voice & stiff manner, one must realize that we were not yet a media-savvy, public relations drenched, nation, to the point where politicians tailored everything to the camera, microphone, & polls. Radio, of course, existed but speaking in sound bytes would've been incomprehensible to politicians & society in that era & remained decades away. Mrs. Coolidge, obviously a pleasant lady, sounds a little trilly but this could be due to the condition of such ancient audio. Many presidents of Coolidge's era, including Congressmen & Senators, had been born in the 19th-century, retaining their native dialects & speaking in oratorical styles that came directly out of the 1800's. Of course, most of these long-ago public servants would never be elected today because a politician's public image, looks, & charisma, nowadays dominate every aspect of American society,, in addition to conscious efforts to eliminate any regional accents. I still love Coolidge, though!
Feels nice hearing Calvin and Grace’s voices. You can tell Calvin’s calmer than his wife was who has always remained vivacious many times.
Mrs. Grace Coolidge is so pretty. Absolutely love her charming voice and her bright smile. Wish there were more “talking “films of her from the 1920s.
Calvin: “I note that these seals properly carry your picture.😐”
Grace: “OH! THAT’S A GOOD PEN YOU’VE GOT THERE!! YOU’VE DONE THIS BEFORE! 😄”

I love how emotional Calvin’s line delivery is. He’s a charmer for sure. 😂
If you haven’t seen it you should check out him speaking at his college reunion especially at the last few minutes he tells a few jokes
I like how enthusiastic the First Lady is
And this is the first time i've heard Coolidge speak
Such a realistic looking Santa Claus.
Had me fooled.
Except he’s a liar! Everyone knows Santa is from Finland, not Iceland.
@@liamcragin Except you are a liar! Everyone knows Santa is from Sweden, not Finland.
@@ChattyK8676 except the fact that real Santa was a Greek from Anatolia.
@@GeorgeDenis. Except for Santa was actually from Greenland. Bunch of Ignorant goons!
Mrs Coolidge is so cool.
A great President, very under-rated
Coolidge seemed to be a genuinely decent person from what I've observed so far
from what ive researched, its sort of mixed. many people say he wasnt but also many people say he was
Cal’s voice…no wonder he never talked.
I find it oddly charming
He talked a lot. Before FDR, he pioneered the use of radio to Reece Americans and gave many speeches
lets be real, nobody expected calvin to sound like that
What a minute, Calvin Coolidge exists?!
those kids are probably still alive but super old
some but not all. Most of them are problem less that 10
If a child was 10 years old in 1930 he would now ( I used 2021) be 101 years old ! Those children are most likely passed on.
@@oldblackstock2499 yeah
my grandpa was 5 when this was filmed, and he died 11 years ago
Real charmer was Calvin.
Best president in American history.

@USAAF1941 He was able to charm her in 1904 and I think that's all that matters

@Awakeningspirit20 that makes sense. I'm autistic and I kind of relate heavily with Coolidge in more than just policy.
It's like the most cringe meeting and then you realize that Santa is super fit, like a man of steel, not at all fat... and his dog is amazing!
I'm so glad I came across this!
Wow, Grace Coolidge has some charisma
I Think Calvin Coolidge Sounds Like Squidward
In my opinion, he sounds more like SpongeBob.
