I think a great interviewee for this would be Hjalti Árnason (the coach constantly yelling "Kazmierinn!" at Jon Pall in WSM 88), competitive strongman in the 80s and 90s, unfortunately never made WSM finals, he started training with Jon Pall as teenagers, was a mentor to a young Magnus Ver, made the documentary about Jon Pall after he died and is still active in the strongman scene in Iceland and hosting competitions, including the upcoming ISM that will be streamed by Rougue.
Thanks for having Nick on, he is an inspiration. I keep feeling like I'm on the downhill slope at 45, but with guys like him and Felix... I got no excuses.
As a 32 year old whos best deadlift is 300kg, guys like Best, Odd Haugen, Felix, Savickas who keep getting stronger in to their 40''s are super inspirational and a role model. Old man strength all the way
@@whenisasnakeatail4933 likewise I am just stuck at 155kg and just cannot get past it. I can squat 160kg. I think my lack of hamstring and calf flexibility plays a massive part in it.
Great interview guys two gentle giants. I've never been to a WSM event but always wanted to. I bumped into you once Loz a long time ago at Chiquitos in Swindon you never quite appreciate how big you guys really are until you actually stand next to you 😂👍 keep up the good work. Nick very pleased for you not having to work full time brother. Hope to see you in Giants live and other comps very soon. 👍
I briefly met Nick and got a photo with him when he came to Australia's FitEx (now Arnolds) maybe 10-11 years ago. I think Poundstone won the competition (with an injured bicep iirc) but Nick came second and would entertain the crowd and joke around with some of us. Great guy and a total class act!
Nick is a good lad. Always cheered for Nick. It feels like I have been watching you, Nick, Mark and Caron for so long now. Always a staple in the sport. Great embassadors of the sport.
I love Nick, he's one of the more personable strongmen, and you can tell he thinks carefully about everything he does which I have a lot of respect for. Can't wait for the next interview Loz! Good shit
Awesome interview as always Loz. Can't wait to see maybe Mariusz or Mateusz on. I know their English is more difficult than others but mateusz did well with brain saws video.
great to hear how much it means to the strongman now that the big arena shows are rolling. the shows are just as important to the fans too, strongman is arguably the most ancient sport on the planet, back in ye olde times (lol) our strongmen would have been the protectors of the tribe, the backbone at harvest time. strongman, its visceral, ancient ingrained in humanity
Nice to hear Loz and Nick talking about slow progression. I was here thinking I should’ve started in my teens because of people a couple years older than me like Tom Stoltman already at Worlds, but hearing 2 of the all time greats say it’s all about slow progression just makes my spark burn a little brighter!
Nick ol school he come from a time when u don't ask for nothing. And you work for every thing he what America use to be. I watch the show I think ed had a lot of respect for nick, and I think you could see nick think a lot of ed to. You could see it when he talked about him he doesn't want him hurt. The best part of the show is when you animals forget for a second the world watching and you boys just talking old times. That we're no other talk can compete with you. It make it great. Just like walking in the ol store and listen to the ol timers talking back in the day. I'm 40 I understand them times
Amazing that Nick doesn’t have to work anymore 🙏🏻💪🏻 Loved watching him on the strongest man in history tv show !! He had chest problems and still tried to finish the race ! Amazing and timeless
Nick Best is one of my favourite strongmen of all time, not just for his extraordinary feats of physical strength but the strength of his character as well.
Loz, keep talking to these guys and you’ll get hungry... fingers crossed! No sport is better to their fans, or appreciate them more than strongman. They should be rewarded for that.
I knew Nick was a Champion Powerlifter but didn't know his Powerlifting career lasted for so long Nick can still put younger guy's in their place nice Guy always great to see him do so well.
I met Nick and Oberst in the UK. As it happens they were doing log at the same time as me. I was in PR territory and they we're warming up 🤣 But, Best and Oberst are true credits to the sport, they're polite, humble and just down to earth people. You should try and get Robert Oberst on!
I like Nick's maturity. I thought he was going to kill Robert Oberst a couple of times. I agree that I hope neither Eddie or Thor get hurt in this fight. I also liked both of your comments about Paul Anderson. I love Paul Anderson! Amazing man.
1000th like gave me a celebratory animation. I feel like this is as special as winning world's strongest or something. 🤣 Good chat, Nick is a cool guy.
Excellent interview!! Been a fan of Nick Best for a long time. (for fyi Green Mambas are not found in Botswana. Odds are it was a Boomslang or one of the Green Snakes)
First off... took me to 25 minutes in to notice 'Possibly Thanos'. Was glad I'd finished eating when I did or I'd have likely choked on it laughing. Well played Loz. I watched 2010 wsm not too long ago also and gods that was an amazing battle on the sand in the loading race. One of the best one event battles in WSM history maybe. Might be the last one I watched... don't remember seeing a young Thor competing as-yet. On what's said about progress etc... I'd kind of really like to see someone who isn't a high level body-builder or powerlifter starting out, and maybe someone like yourself, or Hafthor sharing their progress on here, or instagram. Also... I feel for anyone who has to roll with Nick in Jiu-jitsu. That said, hoping Nick has some big guys to grapple with for some actual challenge. Technique goes a long way, but if someone can overpower their partner's whole body with one arm, it's redundant. And lastly... on Big Z's log record.... thing is, Z's training to compete again... chances are he'll be the one to beat his own record again.
“Everyone develops at a different stage” wise wise words !! I’m looking to get into strongman as I just finished playing basketball at university ... felt abit down after seeing people my age lift double what I can! But I’m gonna take your advice and keep at it !!
Nick best is so humble man and so strong man, i send for him in his instagram account and i am in medial east in the Arabian Gulf And he answers me he is my idol cuz I started strong man in same his age and i am 40 years old also mark the panther felix also thanks for the the interview with nick best I hope to see mark felix also and we want learn from him
I'm trying to start training up for the oldman Masters competitions at 38, but Rogue has been out of stock of everything since the virus hit😥😋. Nick and Mark Felix are definitely super inspirations, I dream of one day having grip strength even remotely close to Mark's.
What do we (the fans) have to do to get Strongman as financially lucrative as basketball? I don’t want these guys to have to worry about feeding their athletic careers.
We are miles away from basketball money but supporting the guys pages, buying merchandise, Patreon etc are the best ways to help them right now. Obviously we want the sport to Grow so attending live events etc. Unfortunately it’s a slow process to See the rewards through to The athletes but it is improving slightly. I’m doing a live Q&A next week so we could go into more details then
you cant be mad at Eddie if he was being honest by saying one of the legs didnt move, thats a true friend, and arsehole friend would have left you thnking you lifted it forever when you never did
I like how his title is "Possibly Thanos" hahaha, that's so great.
;)
Great screen name Dohnny Jepp 🤣
🤣
So you're telling me that Nick could always have a beard like that and just chose not to?
Hahaha what's the thing with beards? Mine grows so fast and I hate it 🤣
Happy that Nick can avoid the 9 to 5 now. May we all be so fortunate one day.
If anyone deserves it, it's Nick.
@A.A.Ron Davis thats sick
He doesn’t get enough credit . He’d be incredibly impressive even if he was 30 but at 50 years old his numbers are mind blowing . Incredible athlete
41:30 when he talks about Brian and Thor if anyone is here for that.
Thank you so much man, it’s exactly what I came for.
Mark Felix and Nick Best are like the gate keeper's of strong man.
I'm in my 40s, and every time I want to give in to my "old man aches", I think to myself, "F(×# it, Nick Best can leg press a car"
I hear that. I’m 51 and still plugging along. Just a little smarter from when I was younger
@@Joe-rw1bb I used to think I was smarter...but I've been home from work for two days on a back injury from doing something "the young guy way"

Imagine if people in general talked to and cared for each other like this, society would be much better.
Agreed. Everyone cares about their "selfish self" unfortunately
My thoughts exactly

Nick is the boss dude .started lifting in 1984 😶 all the top competitors where born 5 years after that and he is still crushing it!
Thanks for having Nick on, he is an inspiration. I keep feeling like I'm on the downhill slope at 45, but with guys like him and Felix... I got no excuses.
Easing back into benching with 10-rep sets of 120kg...two weeks after elbow surgery. I have no words. Dude’s a beast!
I can’t even bench that yet🤣
I did that for a double a couple weeks back, nearly passed out 🤣
Loz does it again with the top tier interviews. Always love listening to these!
More to come!
Nick Best, what a man ! Always liked his attitude. great athlete.
This is such a good episode, Loz. It just feels like 2 buddies reminiscing over some of their best experiences. Really good stuff.
The nice guys of strongman both genuine blokes who don’t let their ego get ahead of them.

The most impressive lift I saw was an 82.5kg powerlifter pull 300kg in 1992 or 93, if you can pull 300kg your are a true strongman.

So much wisdom in 50 minutes. Thoroughly enjoyed this video. Nick Best just shot up my list of favorite strongmen of all time!
