Just to say... I have the gs645s and as much as I'm sure the bellows are cool. Just having the camera ready to shoot at all times is also cool and the way you can bridge the shutter and aperture dials with your thumb to adjust both while maintaining the same exposure is super handy. And obviously the feel the lens gives the image is really striking
Already had the chance to listen to all released podcast episodes... we really need more of this, I'll certainly be listening to them all over again when I'm out shooting.
Absolutely love my dad's gs645. Never had an issue with the film advance or any of the internal mechanisms, just light leaks that we've had repaired. Rock solid now, I've probably put about 8 rolls of film through it since we got the bellows fixed. One of my all time favorites
In the searching for analogue culture to inject in my brain, i stumbled into your channel. I've been following your work for some months now and i can tell you without doubts that your are one of my favorite youtubers and photographers around here. Just love the vibe off your channel, photos and video editing. Thanks for inspire me and to inspire the others.
Really love this format of video, always nice to. get a candid update from other photographers. Also started listening to your podcast today; sounds great! Excited to listen to the rest!
i’m an owner of the gs645 professional and yup light leaks was an issue from the beginning, i changed the bellow with a chinese one bought on ebay an it works like a charm now. love the sharpness of the lens and the portability !!
Probably a little late for you to make a decision but I also have a GS645. I knew going in that the bellows was likely going to need to be replaced. It's a known issue with the original bellows. Replacements are about $60 on eBay and the replacement process isn't too bad. A plus is that along with black you can also get bellows in blue or red. I would have liked blue but none were available at the time so I got red. Looks great. After about a year my camera also started to develop issues with the film advance. I downloaded the service manual and broke off what I now believe was a left hand threaded screw in the process of trying to fix it. I feared I had turned an expensive camera into a paper weight but I did eventually manage to replace the screw and doing a little cleaning and lubricating seems to have fixed the film advance problem. It's a finicky camera and even though everything seems to be functioning right now, I'd not be surprised at some point if the shutter decides to stick or just won't fire because something in the linkage didn't mate correctly when the camera was unfolded. Easy enough to fix but can be maddening. And you have to remember to set the focus at Infinity and advance the film or you can't fold the camera. On the other hand, it's tough to find a more compact medium format rangefinder with a meter and that great of a lens without spending a small fortune. Plus it's a pretty unique camera that takes great pictures. So I'm keeping it and will live with its quirks. But prices even for this model have gone sky high. I don't know that I could ever justify buying another one.
Hey Kyle. Iv’e listed to 2 out of the 3 episodes available so far and to no surprise it’s exceptional. Thanks so much for creating such amazing content for the community.
Was blown away by Contact Sheet. It feels like something 99% Invisible/Radiotopia would produce in terms of quality. Super excited for future episodes!
hi kyle, thank you for putting out your work. these videos are really more than dull gear reviews and really do have some soul. I'm excited about the podcast. Keep up and stay healthy. I'd love to be talking to you personally one day. All the best from south Germany. Dominik.
I bought my GS645 for $40 bucks with problems with the shutter. All it needed was a clean and lube. I replaced the bellows while I was in there. The bellows was like $60 or $70 and the very specialty (and nessesary) 3M 850 1in Polyester Film Tape was $15. Has been holding up for a few years putting many rolls of film through and I don't hesitate to rely on it. They are out there for cheap if you look deep.
As a returner to film after 15 years in a sterile digital wilderness (the problem was me, not the medium), I appreciate your thoughtful balance of rationality and art, Kyle. Looking forward to the podcasts very much.
I've owned two GS645 cameras plus a GS645W. The first GS645 was stolen; I still have the second. I replaced the bellows on both. Fuji used a plastic material of cover the bellows. It dried and started cracking within 10 years or so. If you buy one now, assume the bellows will have to be replaced, about $125, unless seller can prove the job has been done. Extraordinarily sharp lens. Otherwise., it is no more delicate than any other folder camera. I've not heard of any common problems with the film advance or meter electronics. I keep mine as a backup to my GA645Zi, which is very dependent on its electrics.
Love the approach you're taking with the podcast, the process of image-making excited me much more than what camera and film stock were used. Keep up the brilliant work Kyle.
Hey Kyle, new subscriber here! Loving all of your content. Just picked up a Contax RTS II and a few CZ lenses so I'm super excited to start my journey into film photography. Your vids have been giving me so much inspiration!!! Keep up a great work & stay safe!
I bought one back in 2008, used it on and off. Never had major issues with it, although the meter needs work at this point and it has slight catching noise when it is closed. Like you, I worry about it not being robust enough to be my everyday camera, debating about putting it back into service. Love the image results.
Kyle McDougall - I’ve listened to your podcast with Ian Howorth 3x now and each time learning something new I missed before. Being a photographer/filmmaker, I get all the issues you both were discussing.
I love my gs645 and haven't had any issues since purchasing a couple of years back. Haven't had any issues with light leaks or concerns about fragility (and it has taken a few hits without issue). There is also a certain comfort in knowing that even in the event that electronics fail or batteries die that I'll be able to keep shooting it for years to come. I hope you end up trying it out again.
I've owned two GS645 cameras (first one stolen) going back 35 years. I follow them fairly closely, and I've never seen or heard of the meter failing in one. (The electrics only involve the meter.) The bellows is a different matter. It is made of stiffened, folded cloth with a thin plastic cover, which provides weather resistance and makes it light tight. Like plastic used a lot in the photo industry in the 1970s, it was a poor choice. All (and I mean ALL) GS645 bellows plastic covers will crack and split in the fold corners if it is used, creating light leaks. If the camera has been stored for decades, the plastic will still deteriorate and crack open once the cameras is used a bit. If you buy a GS645 today, to avoid economic disappointment, budget about $125 for parts and labor to replace the bellows as part of your purchase decision, unless the seller can prove past bellows replacement. Best (maybe only) replacement bellows are made in England. (Do not use the cheaper Chinese bellows on ebay - they often do not fit when closed). Not really a DIY job, as the lens/rangefinder have to be realigned (culminated) once the new bellows is installed. A quick job if you have the right optical tools, and nearly impossible to do without.
Had the same problem with mine along with a bellows covered of pinhole. Send it to repair shop in Paris. Went back as new, and the lens is stellar, since then it triggered a craving for rangefinder. Closing the camera is also tedious, which is probably the most dangerous for this delicate beast Thanks for sharing
I really enjoy watching your videos, specially the more technical ones; even though I might not understand all the lingo it does help a lot. Cheers from Brazil, Luan
I got one in mint condition, but with a leaking bellows. I got a new bellows from eBay and replaced the damaged one. There are detailed instructions online which will lead you through this step-by-step. Little tricky, but definitely doable..Rangefinder adjustment can be done by turning 2 screws under the flash mount. I am super happy with this compact little camera that will definitely be comming along on my next trip. Cheers!
I have the FUJI GS645S and its one of my favorite cameras. I find myself carrying it much more than my Mamiya rb6x7. I took it with m]e out to the mid north west USA for my last project and never had a single issue with it. Incredibly sharp lens, easy to use light meter and all around one of my favorite cameras. Only reason i bought the mamiya afterwards was so i could shoot portraits because i feel the Fuji is best suited for landscape and architecture photography.
I got one, was told that the bellows were free from light leaks. Alas it was not so, the bellows were full of pin holes. Had to take the camera to a camera repair shop in Philly to have the Bellows replaced. What I found out is that the original bellows the Fuji used were not of high quality. I’m having the bellows replaced and should last another 40 years. So be aware of the bellows when buying another one.
I had similar issues with the GS , slight drop from a bag of the camera and it seized up. Bag was already on the floor so it wasn't a big drop. Really enjoyed gigapixel ai. Bought a license. I have a Kodak f135+ which has lovely Kodak copiurs in its scans but they are quite small pixels wise.
Found your channel a couple of weeks ago as I’ve been transitioning from an uninspired digital camera to shooting mainly 35mm and 120. You’re videos are great! Keep up the awesome work!
Great your reaching out to use . Film photography is bursting back to life now . I even have my 14 yr old son asking me questions and wanting a film camera. Think I'll give him my spare canon ae1.
Great update! I picked up the Fuji GA645 recently and also found the vertical viewfinder so jarring at first, but I’ve come to really love it and find myself shooting more portrait orientation images than I typically shoot. 645 format cameras were quite popular since the early 1930s. They were then all point-n-shoot or rangefinder cameras, often bellows folders like the GS645. After the 1950s, they died out as the 127 film most used lost popularity. Makers like Zeiss and Konica maintained the format, but in the vertical style of the GS645 because they shot on 120 film. Only the introduction of the Mamiya 645 SLR started the practice of 645 in landscape mode, because the film in those cameras runs vertically rather than horizontally like nearly all before. The disappearance of traditional 645 format rangefinder cameras and the popularity of 645 SLRs now makes it seem that the 645 vertical format is a new and odd feature, whereas over its history, most of cameras used the format shot vertically.
@@KyleMcDougall Now, around 5/22, it is hard to imagine that anyone with any sense of value would pay the current price of around $2,900 US for the GF670 used. Years ago when they were first announced, I planned to get one to go with my heavy Pentax 67 system for hiking, etc. When it came out, the sticker shock put me off. It never got cheaper, and after some time and use, reports of various failures (more than normal) have started adding up. With Fuji running away from warranty service in 2 years, and so few in service that parts are going to be a major repair problem in the future, I'd reluctantly pass this one, unless you are prepared to toss away $3k on a whim.
As always great video. As far as I know film transport is not a common issue with GS645 cameras. Old bellows tend to leak after sitting for a long time and being used again. It's best to store your camera opened. If you like the camera buy one and change the bellows for the new one - you should get the good camera for years to come!
Thanks for the video, I am looking again for a 645 after selling my mamiya and Bronica a while back, the Fuji 645 does not look as robust as my GSW690, might try another Mamiya....
Just love the common desk lamp instead of "mandatory" RGB youtube LED light in background. I'd really appreciate more in-depth introduction to the Fujifilm Fuji(ca) G*645* family. They all seems to me quit same but different in the same time.
Loving the channel and looking forward to getting into the podcast. The recent photos have inspired me - lost a little confidence with my urban shooting - but can feel the urge building again! Keep up the great work. Pity about the Fuji!
i love the fact that the fuji GS645 is in portrait mode. something super attractive about it!

My local camera store replaced the bellows in my GS and it’s been a great travel camera for 7 years now.

Enjoy!
It's great having another great podcast to listen to, looking forward to seeing what other creatives you have lined up to talk with 🙂
Thanks for listening
I had similar issues with the GS , slight drop from a bag of the camera and it seized up. Bag was already on the floor so it wasn't a big drop. Really enjoyed gigapixel ai. Bought a license. I have a Kodak f135+ which has lovely Kodak copiurs in its scans but they are quite small pixels wise.
Hell yeah, can't wait to listen to the podcast
I love all fujis cameras and I am very excited to check out your podcast!!
Found your channel a couple of weeks ago as I’ve been transitioning from an uninspired digital camera to shooting mainly 35mm and 120. You’re videos are great! Keep up the awesome work!
Thanks Josh!
Great video! Thanks for all your help on this photography journey
Looking forward to listening to the podcast. Good vid, man.
Loving the podcast, looking forward to whats to come
Thanks for listening, Madison!
so excited for the podcast
Congratulations on the Podcast! Brilliant. Thank you for sharing :)
Thank you!
Really looking forward to giving the podcast a listen Kyle!
Looking forward to the Podcast, I’m heading straight over there to subscribe in a moment ✌🏻
Thanks Liam! And yeah, I think I shot two landscape images out of two rolls. Funny how it inspires you to shoot more portrait orientation images.

I'm excited to check out your podcast Kyle! Looking forward to some great conversations.
Thank you!
There's a certain suave to your style of content; it's inspiring! Best wishes from New York.
Thank you, Miles!
Very nice.
Now off to scaning some film and listening to the new podcast :)
I’d recommend GF670. Superb lens, bellow construction and modern AE function. Plus, Fuji still officially repairs and overhaul until 2024.
One of my dream cameras.

Nice that you have another creative outlet 👍
Looking forward to checking out the podcasts, will be nice to break up the monotony of quarantine!
Thanks for the video, I am looking again for a 645 after selling my mamiya and Bronica a while back, the Fuji 645 does not look as robust as my GSW690, might try another Mamiya....
Love your videos and your recent continuity. please keep it up. all the best from Vienna.
Thank you!
I've loved this recent video cadence! It's nice to see a bit more of your stuff.
Thank you!
Great Video. Really appreciate these updates!
I’ll have to give the podcast a listen this weekend. Keep up the great work, Kyle.
Thanks, Andrew. :)
Great Video again Kyle always look forward to your videos!
Thanks, Will!
Great video! Love the podcast. Binged the first two episodes toward, looking forward to more.
Thanks for checking it out, Bryan.
