🇨🇳 Kay Kay: The Girl from Guangzhou | Rewind

  • Kay Kay is the face of modern day China, a bright, educated and ambitious 20 year old living in the booming southern city of Guangzhou. She represents a new generation of middle class Chinese ‘only’ children, benefiting from China’s economic growth as well as the single-minded dedication of her factory-worker parents.
    First broadcast in 2012, this unique film followed Kay Kay for her whole life, filming with her and her family at regular intervals since her birth in 1992. It gives a rare, personal narrative to the decades of transformation of China during the first 20 years of her lifetime.
    From an innocent childhood and school days through to her university life where she struggles to get to grips with China's economic imperatives in the face of environmental issues, Kay Kay is a charming, engaging guide to modern China, its people and the miracle of the country’s economic growth during those two decades.

    I was born in mid 1990s in a small town close to GuangZhou. The tapes in the first part of the video brought back so much memories of my earlier life. Literally felt like watching my own life there.

    Remarkable, a beautifully created documentary. It is incredible to see how a country transformed itself in only 2 short decades for this girl and her family.

      You can tell kids in China then don’t have all the fancy toys like North American kids. Kay was taught to use her imagination, singing and learning from her parents and not the T.V. A bit of Homeschooling,

    Just love the duality of dialects that her parents have passed down to her daughter, one is their native Guangzhou Cantonese and also standard Mandarin.

      All Malaysian Chinese children need to learn three (mother tongue, English and Malay) or four (mother tongue, Mandarin, Malay and English) languages. So, two should not be a problem at all.

      Michelle Topham Everybody wants a easy going baby like Kay. Her parents are lucky Kay wasn’t a trouble child that is fussy.I wonder how her teeth straightened out? Most Chinese don’t usually have Orthodontic services like In North America. Its usually for rich parents who can’t afford it.

    • @hoganhughes3265
      @hoganhughes3265 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Yogirliej4dee That's miles away from the truth.Most Chinese don't have orthodontic service not because we can't afford it, just because the elder generation don't think it is a serious issue compare to a "real "disease.
      Of course, it's not a scientific attitude about this issue, so more and more parents care about their children's tooth as well as their own this years. That means things related to the dentists are worth investing nowadays here in China

    It's amazing how China progressed so quickly! The mother said a country is like a person. If you're poor, you get pushed around. If you're rich you can speak your mind. I wonder how the UN and other western countries would treat my country if we were as powerful. I wonder if they'd be as blatant in criticizing us and our government.
