Dancing Again
"Let's go!"
"What?" I said, still drunk with sleep.
My sister stared back at me with widened eyes.
My eyebrows answered in an uneven frizzle like waves crushing against shore.
"We are leaving!" she said, her voice speaking with an urgency I hadn't known she possessed.
"Wait what?" I said again as she clicked her tongue, rolled her eyes and turned away from me.
"W... where?" I stammered.
"Urghhhhh" she stomped.
"Just anywhere! We are going! Let's go!"
With these words she climbed into the closet, pulled out the old suitcases and started throwing random things into them. Both her things and mine. The teddy Mama gifted me on my last birthday. It was still full of sand because Freddy had taken it on an excursion. Moms broken necklace. The dress she wore at mums funeral. Freddys favorite toy car that I had placed on my nightstand. Shirts. Pants. Undergarments. The toothrbrush. She stuffed in everything she could get her hands on in no particular order.
She only halted, when she stood in front of the music box on the dresser. Papa had gifted it to her, the oldest in the family now, after...
The ballerina had stopped dancing long ago. Just like my sister.
She sighed. Went to get a piece of paper and a pen and scribbled a barely readable note.
"Goodbye, Papa. Don't try to find us."
She then proceeded to fold it up carefully, put it in the music box and closed it. Then she turned the lever around. When Papa would open the box, the ballerina would spin again. As would the words on that little note. Goodbye, Papa.
I just watched her doing it, still not understanding what was happening. But I remember the jealousy I felt when she got that beautiful gift and I got nothing but grief. Why didn't she pack Papas present?
"Don't worry" she said, walking towards me slowly. Her hand reached out to me and she ganzed down into the confusion that must have been my face "we will be fine. I promise. But we need to leave. Now. Take what you need. We won't come back."
I still didn't understand. But my big sister had always watched over me and I would have trusted my life into her hands, if needed.
"Okay" i whispered "but I need Mamas scarf."
She nodded. But be careful, she said with her eyes.
I tippled into the dark hallway and into my mothers quarters. Papa was snoring. I slowly opened the drawer of Mamas dresser and grabbed the scarf. My hands were carassing the soft cashmere while my nose sucked in that familiar smell. Before sneaking out my eyes wandered over to the empty crib.
It was still dark when we arrived at the front door. I had to lift her up so she could reach our big coats on the hangers. But we got it done. And then we ran, suitcases in hand, memories in heart, through the tall grass, towards the rising sun and the mountains.
"But where will we go?" i asked her, huffing and puffing, gasping for air.
"Somewhere he will never find us" she said.
It was the first time since, that I saw her smile.
