I can remember when T&C opened in 1960. It was the first strip mall in Michiana. Goldblatt's was the anchor store. That was the beginning of the end for Robertson's and other stores in downtown South Bend. In '73 Scottsdale Mall opened. That was a bigger nail in downtown's coffin. Then in '79 it was U.P. Mall. That really did it!
Use to go to that big lots all the time in the 90s when i was a kid! My parents would load us all up in the car and go shopping in south bend and mishawaka on the weekends! We would also go to venture and funcoland too before it was gamestop lol miss the 90s and those days
I’m from this area. It used to be a Kroger grocery store when I was young. Kroger relocated across the plaza and then Big Lots took over and just moved back in March.
That first entrance had a few stacks of plastic lawn chairs. It was closed off. I live a block away from town and country and used to go to all of these abandoned places.
Eeeeeyyyyy! One of my favorite places to go to with my grandparents when I was a kid. In fact my late grandfather pulled security right across the street from that plaza for a while.
I don't think it was ever a grocery store (although the building across the street used to house a Martin's location for many years), it's always been a Big Lots or something similar. I bought a lot of hats there in the mid 90s. A friend of mine kicked one of the doors to close it, and the whole thing shattered. Good times.
That empty space and how it looked around the front doors kinda reminds me of the older Super Valu grocery stores where the big lots was. Not sure if you guys had Super Valu stores in Ohio in the past.
Town & country is the oldest continuously operating strip plaza in the country it's not abandon its being remodeled in Mishawaka furniture is moving into that spot

It was a Wilt's grocery store (local chain) and before that, it was a National Supermarket in the 70s.

Nice find. The first door you went to is definitely old school grocery store style. Kinda reminds of the old Big Lots at Meyers lake plaza.

Cool fact....Robert Kennedy stopped at this very shopping plaza the (Town & Country plaza) on his campaign trail before he was assassinated.
Also the discount bargain zone is was the former Hancock fabrics and the Dunham’s is where the Kroger used to be
That smaller room was furniture and the big lots moved into the former kmart building in Mishawaka
I live in Mishawaka half used to be the furniture section the other had food and other stuff for like your home. No body really went there that often.

because the building is abandoned. It doesn't matter where they moved, the building that they were in is now abandoned.
I hate how big lots closes stores
You can tell that Big Lots was there since 80s or 90s because of the orange paint on the back walls where shelves were.
The new big lots is in the same plaza where the CVS was.
I like this But lots better than the new one...They down size.I miss this BIG LOTS...

That store is a few blocks from my apartment. They moved that store to the other side of the street. I go thru there all the time. @thejustin5
