It's so hard to watch Reena trying to befriend the group in flashbacks, knowing how tragically her story will end. 💔

I would have just told the parents before the other kids came over to not say anything about being in a group home cause now all the kids are like “oh your talking about us behind our back”. Reena’s parents just didn’t want her to forget her Indian culture but to her, she wants to be like every other kid

@@Lboogie0711It’s not about Indian culture . If he had been white and believed in family , he could have said the same thing, White people have family values too . He hadn’t been around such teenagers and didn’t realise he’d said the wrong thing. Later , We see the wife Suman annoyed with him and he still didn’t realise why. Those girls were just jealous of Reena as she had family who loved and cared for her and they had no-one
Dusty smirked and said she didn’t want prayers from the dad, Manjit , to reunite with her sister . Yet we see later that Dusty goes to see her older sister and begs her to take her back and let her live with her . We see later that BEFORE the father made those comments, Josephine STOLE Reena’s mother’s earrings and put them in her bag and Kelly went into Reena’s room and released her bird out of the window ( which is very cruel as that bird would not know how to fend for itself ). We also learn later that the teenagers were racists . ( That’s also why Reena didn’t want her parents to serve Indian food )
What I thought was wrong was that Suman was a strict Jehovah Witness. She was too strict with Reeva . Reeva wasn’t even allowed to celebrate her birthday . If Suman’s parents hadn’t been manipulated to be JW and had remained as Hindus , I believe Reena would have been much happier .
Funny how times have changed . In the 50s, 60s, and 70s white people said curry was disgusting and they said it smelled . All Indian food was labelled as ‘curry ‘ and was full of apples and raisons🤮🤮 🤣l And white people said vegetarians was for cows as only they ate grass . And they said meditation and yoga which is a fundamental part of the Hindu religion , was for nutters and weirdos . Now many white people eat Indian food , there are many vegetarians and yoga and meditation is seen as very beneficial and is widespread .

This episode was absolutely incredible. The writing, editing, acting, excellent .A 35-minute episode tackling immigration, isolation, cultural lenses, fate, and destiny is no easy task. When it ended I had to start it from the beginning just to catch everything I missed. Side thought, I loved the little detail that the Jehovah's witnesses entered their life on their daughter's first birthday, a crushing day when no one came to the party. Here comes this community ready to seize an opportunity during a celebration that they don't recognize.

These girls remind me of my elementary school bullies, how they treat girls who want to be like them.

Yeah, I got bullied by girls like this in my middle school years and I tried to fit in with troubled guys thinking they were "cool" and "badass" only to realize they were awful losers.

Reena’s “friends” were awful but her dad was way out of line here. As much as I despise Josephine I don’t blame her for getting so upset. If only Reena could see how much they all wanted her type of life.

I agree that Manjit the dad was insensitive and clueless but he didn’t do it out of malice . He thought he was doing good . Later on his wife was annoyed with him but he innocently thought he did good . Suman the mum was also naive as after a while she trusted the girls. Josephine stole Suman’s real gold earrings (‘Jumka) . Kelly took Reena’s parrot and released it out of the window. Nasty girls.

@@maryjane7611 my interpretation (which is obviously based only on this fictional scene and not any kind of evaluation of the real Mr. Virk)- he had kind intentions but could’ve approached the conversation with more tact and sensitivity. Yes, the truth is these children lack certain resources but to be told they are abandoned, suffering, have nothing, etc is not helpful in that situation. They don’t have the support system that Reena’s family displayed and that is all the more reason to seek agency or power in nontraditional places, like chosen family or projecting one’s own toughness. We see multiple instances of Jo projecting onto Reena by saying that she would choose Seven Oaks/“freedom” over living with her family as if she has any control over her situation. Jo ultimately manipulates Reena into acting out this decision by making false accusations against her father to move to Seven Oaks as if to prove that she really is better off and not just a victim as Mr. Virk believes. It’s a coping mechanism to exercise control because Reena’s stable family life makes her feel small.
Back to that moment at dinner, the girls may have felt that Mr. Virk was invalidating their lived experiences by telling them who they are and how they should feel. Again, this is all highly fictionalized, but the conversation may not have escalated if Mr. Virk didn’t immediately point out all of their trauma, but instead got to know them a little better by being curious about their interests and inviting them to open up.
(TLDR don’t speak on others’ trauma and keep your conversations grounded in “I” statements)

How dumb is your parents? Because you got nothing but stupidity written all over your comment. Your parents should be ashamed of how you think others and their culture is suppose to benefit others. It's THEIR CULTURE!! that's what they're accustomed to nothing wrong with Reenas parents expressing their culture !

Her parents were loving and caring and had a good heart. Even though the father was wrong with his approach, it was obvious that it came from a good place. Keep in mind that those girls are in HIS house! He doesn’t have to change anything about himself for anyone, especially when those disrespectful disgusting girls are a guest in his house.
