This was awesome. I would totally watch you shop for plants at least once a week if you made this a regular thing! It's fun to see all the plants and hear your thoughts on them, maybe even tell the beginners in the group which plants would thrive in different situations, light/humidity/soil type. That would be a great video for people who are new to houseplants, an educational shop-along 😊
That’s a great idea thanks so much Joan! I’m so glad you enjoy coming along on these shopping trips! I will aim to add in some more tips next time 🥰 thanks so much for watching and for this thoughtful comment!😊💜🌿✨💕 happy planting✨
Love that fettonia. I have never seen that variety. The only way I can keep it alive is in a glass enclosure or in my prop box. A lady at my daughter's office didn't want her money tree so my daughter brought it home for me. It was in bad shape and was also braided. My windows are cold in winter and because of trees around the house it didn't get much light during winter, but repotting and unbraiding, it has perked right up and looks really nice. Our home depot has the same plants as you and prices very similar and yes the prices seem to have increased. Your husband is an awesome mate as mine would never have plant shopped lol Love your videos and look forward to your next one❤
Thank you Bette! 🥰 I love that your daughter brought you a plant to nurture back to health! I guess plant prices are going up everywhere right now, thanks for confirming. Also, my husband says thanks for the compliment haha😄 Thanks for watching💜 have a lovely week!
Those ruffled, pink fittonia are Fittonia Albivenis 'Frankie'! One of (if not my absolute) favourite fittonia variety. Higher light makes them more pink from my experience!
The Croton is a beautiful plant, have four in one pot, by plant I mean the leaves. When they bloom, it smells devine! I have mine indoors for several years now and have not had any pest.
Thanks for defending Crotons!! 🧡 I can feel myself coming around to them and keep being drawn to them in stores, and you’re convincing me too. I didn’t realize they could smell nice! That’s encouraging about the pests as well. Thanks for watching and sharing your croton positivity hehe 😄💜🌿💕✨happy planting!
I agree! Yes I never noticed such a big price difference for even the plastic outer pots but I guess it’s all getting more expensive 😭 Thanks so much for watching!😊💜🌿✨
Kaitlyn, I am growing that pink ruffled Fittonia under my grow lights and I just set its' pot in a glass jar that has a good 2 inches of reservoir in the bottom, and wick water it, never letting it go dry. It's so easy to grow like this! Also, funny, I thought it was my grow lights that achieved those solid pink leaves, but alas, looks like a new variety, lols.
Ask your HD nursery team what day they get new arrivals of your favorites and most of the time they’ll let you know the best time to go, for what and how soon it hits the floor! Lately, they’ve been getting a ton of variegated plants for cheap. Altman Growers uses a LOT of rooted cuttings for their bigger pots and arrangements, so keep that in mind when watering, deciding when to repot, how to repot and separate. For succulents, they usually have more than one cutting in the pot and you can get a few more plants than you expected well for succulents at least.
I was scared to get a fittonia as I heard from a lot of people they are finicky and need a lot of water. I fell in love with a huge hanging basket I found and I just went for it and I’m proud to say I’ve had it for almost a year now and it’s so big and bushy I love it! I just wait until I see the leaves kinda get sad and I give it a thorough water! 💜
Yay this is so encouraging, I’m so glad you get the big plant and it’s working out for you!!😍☺️🌿💜💕 Thanks so much for watching and sharing your experience 🥰 happy planting!✨
The fittonia's are new. The pink one is called 'Frankie'. I've wanted one for about a year. The lime green with pink veins is maybe a Fittonia Albivenis which I've also been looking to purchase. I'm so glad these are coming out in the big box store. There is also a purple fittonia that I would love to add to my collection. They like to stay wet so I have them in self watering pots.
Absolutely!! Good luck with the bathroom challenge I'll call it. I can't imagine sticking any of my plants in mine even for the humidity. I see the smartness watering plants in the tub. My concern is being annoyed by gnats in such a narrow space. Likewise regarding all things plants. See you in the next video.
I said the same thing when I saw those fittonias. Said I would buy them but they will probably die since I live in the SoCal desert. But guess what? Both are doing great and it’s been about six months. No humidity and no humidifier!
Oo yay that’s so encouraging! No humidifier is great news haha!! 🤩 I’m so glad yours are still thriving😊💜 I put mine in the shower but I’m now thinking it may not be necessary. Thanks so much for sharing that!🌿✨ happy planting!💕
You’re so right, I was lowkey kinda bummed I didn’t get it the whole time I was editing this and after posting…so I sent my husband back to the store to get it the other day and it was still there!!! 😁💜🌿!!! I hope you find an awesome one near you soon😊🤞✨✨
You’re so right, I was lowkey kinda bummed I didn’t get it the whole time I was editing this and after posting…so I sent my husband back to the store to get it the other day and it was still there so I have it now hooray!!! 😁💜🌿 I hope you find an awesome one near you soon😊🤞✨✨
Yes I agree you can always put them in as terrarium they have large round jars with lids Yu out could put in there put lid on and you won't have to water for a year. I've started African violets from leaves in a large clear plastic jug as ND they have been there for at least 2 years and only watered 2 or 3 times with food and they are doing great every leaf is perfect.
i think it might be more expensive because spring is here and more people are starting to buy plants and flowers for their homes. and winter is a pretty slow season for plants stores i believe.
I don't get why everyone is so worried about their Fittonias. I have two of them, one sits in our bathroom in a really dark corner. I forget about it until I notice the leafs start to look different (usually the whole plant feels stiff like sandpaper, but when they start drooping I pet them to see if they feel *soft* and the stems are easy to move). When they enter that state or even later (I have another one in an even darker corner that I always forget) when they already start dropping some leafs and are genuinely lying on the floor... I just hold them under flowing water for a couple of seconds, let the water drip off and just put them back into their spots. I don't know how often I have to water them, maybe once or twice a month?! We don't really have humid air here, so I can't keep any Calathea happy, but I can't kill a Fittonia even if I'd wanted to.
Yes they totally look like coleus! I believe it’s actually a type of fittonia as well, most likely the Frankie type or the vershaffeltii species. Thanks for watching! 😊💜💕🌿✨
A lot of plant TH-camrs have mentioned the plants from the growers have gone up at least a $1.00 a pot 🤷♀️ Here in Canada many of the plants in Home Depot etc., are way more expensive than the US. 😀🇨🇦
GA!! Checking in from MD. As a browser of plants, it's horribly noticable about the high price of plants 😤😤. If the plant i like come with nice pot then it becomes a trade off, otherwise it'll stay right there. I've found the cutest fullest plants on the rolling black cart. Plants basically for $5. We're so glued to the plant display that you'd barely give the cart a 2nd look (tip👍). I recently purchased two fettonias. Definitely attractive to the color. One I bottom watered cause it's too full to do otherwise. The colors from your store are breathtaking OMG. I have a whale fin. Clueless when I purchased it years ago. Today, it's putting out 4 additions. Gives new meaning to slow growing 😱. Overall, I'm enjoying plant shopping whenever I'm out. Get your playlist ready. Unbraiding that tree will be a good one 😂.
Thanks for confirming about the high prices - we’re on opposite coasts too so I guess it’s happeneing all over🥴 Yeah the whale fins are sooo slow growing! 4 new plants forming sounds like a lot actually, congrats! Mine grows so slow too since I keep it in really low light most of the time. Glad you’re enjoying your fittonias, bottom watering is a good idea probably. I’m experimenting with mine in the shower, I’m not sure if its going to be a problem getting constantly wet on the leaves and not a whole lot of light, I suppose we’ll find out soon enough haha😆 Thanks for watching!! Happy planting 😊💜🌿✨
I think the price of everything has gone up. I was shocked the other day when I noticed that olive oil costs almost twice it was before. Maybe the plant shops order their stock so well in advance that the price rises affect the customer long after the price rise actually happened...? I can't buy almost anything now because I'm unemployed and there's a baby on the way, so no plant buying for me... I get my plant fix from taking care of the plants I have and preparing for the summer season of growing vegetables on my balcony🙂
Fittonia's generally THRIVE in terrariums if you got one of those neon pink veined ones (I see that you did now!) 🥰🥰🥰 I have a white veined one but I've seen pink veined ones put in terrariums by other people and exploded with growth ❤
Oh you’re totally right thanks for pointing this out! 💜 For anyone else reading this- the Bantel’s Sensation has darker vertical stripes on the leaves whereas these sayuri Metallica varieties (shown in this video) are much lighter throughout the whole leaf ✨
Fun fact. I found your channel a couple of years ago because of your sanseviera video. I love sansevieras. I used to have over 40 varieties, but I've been losing many due to the rain (I think we've been having more rain than in te pst) over the past 5 years since most of my plants live outside.
Sigh not fair! That size of Whale Fin here in BC Canada is 70$ CAD! Our Home Depot here must hate plants, if I don’t get one right after it was received in shipping, they kill them off fast, underwatered, way overwatered, I’ve gotten a couple rescues for cheap though I bought what was labeled as a Philo Oak leaf, then a year later picked up my Florida Green, apparently the Oak leaf was mislabeled, it’s a Florida for sure, potted them up together… I love crotons there everywhere in Hawaii, but they die every time o bring them indoor for winter, they prefer the 100 degree (f) heat Fittonias /pink polka dot plants etc don’t live for me, my nursery says they’re not supposed to last 🤷♀️
What happens if you unbraid it, please? I have one 8 year old braided and it's about 6 ft. tall. Was wondering about unbraiding it myself but now I have a concern about what you said. Please elaborate. Are you a grower??
@@jackiewhitney5031 well I do have a large plant room and do sell them . I had one smaller about 15" tall that I unbraided when Kaitlyn unbraided hers. I was very gentle and careful about 9 months to a year ago. I have lost 4 of the 5 braids. One survives. All I can say is I couldn't afford to loose a plant that cost almost $200.00 I would probably have a breakdown over it especially if I caused it. Do no I will never unbraid another one. They do sell single ones mad like bonsai in Walmarts and the are really cute and quite striking to look at that would be a choice for a single one

4:47 Big box stores upsell plants with an outer ceramic plant. I would rather buy something at a lower price in a basic nursery pot. 😏
Even the plain black nursery pots went up a dollar at my stores since last fall/winter.
