This movie, what a nice find! Ok, so the actors weren't A List, but there's depth and all were solid performances. Script and direction were superb. Thank you kindly for this post! ❤
Apparently, this was Omhart's first movie. She was considered to be really talented, and was highly regarded in the biz. But, in her first role she was a cheater, a killer, was drunk, and I guess her character committed self deletion, though we don't see that here, and it was considered a major blow to her career. I read that Stanwyck turned down the role. They do look a little alike.
Ohmart had such a smokey voice! I guessed from the first few moments that she was stepping out on her husband, and a victim of domestic abuse! She has that 'wanton' look! Born to Mormon parents, like Amy Adams! Tom Tryon's role was as her stooge! In real life, he was very accomplished. Thanks, DPB! Another gem!
This was really enjoyable. The SoCal of the mid-fifties, that house and the luscious Carol Ohmart. Others like Curtiz, Edith Head, Wally Westmore and Nat Cole, who a year later would appear in Istanbul, which starred Curtiz' former nemesis and star, Errol Flynn.
Intricate plot: much more than I expected. A lot of times these things just mechanically trod along to exactly where you know they're gonna go: 45 minutes worth of plot stretched out to 90 minutes, Always intrigues me how many worthy vintage movies there are that I've never seen - - - never even heard of.

@michaelmiller the actor who played Seinfeld's dad was Jerry Stiller. He and wife, Anne Meara had a comedy duo (1950's-60's), Stiller and Meara. They're the parents of actor/filmmaker Ben Stiller. Elaine Stritch I recognize but, only from mid-century character parts and game shows circa 1970's. :/
@@realskybluepink9124 Supporting comedy actor Barney Martin was actually the one playing Jerry's father on the program while Comedy veteran Jerry Stiller played the father of George Costanza.

Roger that. Tom Tryon played Texas John Slaughter in a series of TV movies for Disney which ran from 1958 to 1961. The role was based on actual historical figure John Slaughter.
Michael Curtiz was no longer making Errol Flynn spectaculars and this is a very low-key effort for him . He'd left Warner Brothers and this pretty-ordinary effort was probably all that he could get. Nat King Cole's brief presence was a welcome plus. Tom Tryon, like Carol Ohmart, was never going to hit the acting 'big time' and he threw in the towel to become a novelist.
Bad ending, could have been resolved in a better way as Marshall’s only crime was stealing worthless jewelry and the Dr. was complicit in a much larger crime of insurance fraud. Sorry to spoil it but it seems as though many good movies are spoiled by bad endings.
Curtains For Curtiz The bad ending had a bad beginning and middle, too. The paste jewelry wasn't "worthless"; it just wasn't worth as much as the real deal. But more importantly, by the end of the evening, Marsh was guilty as a receiver of stolen property, accessory after the fact to a murder, and of withholding evidence for both crimes. The Doc, concerning whom we have no evidence of his presenting himself to the police, could hardly be charged with insurance fraud for merely having had his own property stolen until he actually made a false police report and false insurance claim based on it. His detention in the concluding minutes of the film has no narrative prepartion. That said, this tired would-be noir-ish film has more nonworking parts than a broken cuckoo clock that doesn't keep the correct time. For instnace, @ 47:15 it is reported that "bullets were found all over the place"! You don't find bullets from a pistol all over an open-air crime scene at 2 o'clock in the morning. We are then told that the house is secure when, in fact, the burglars left the garage door open when in pursuit of Marsh. And later in the crime lab we are that the cops have concluded that there were 2 shooters, but we learn that only the young novice was carrying a weapon. See also genegroover3721's gotcha above. - -
