@@nyandyn Yup, and they gave a lot of the fictional tech meanings that still have to be dealt with in fiction today. Also, great characters and stories.
The end of the Gray Death Legion with kind of unceremonious. It was more of a bureaucratic versus a glorious last stand in the Clan Invasion or something.
The Gray Death Legion books were the first Battletech books I read back in the day. The first 3 books are actually great and give a great feel for a small band of mercenaries surviving in the middle of the succession wars were friends are quick to betray you and sometimes the enemy they know is the most reliable partner. The next series in the post Tukayyid era feels like political maneuvering is given too much space. Grayson and his son make several mistakes and let themselves be drawn into intrigues they should have seen coming and avoided at all costs. Also the entire series felt to me like I read book 1-3 and then book 7, 9,10 and 12 of a series. Like there should have been books covering the gap of 4th succession war and the clan invasion. Even then it reads like books and chapters are missing.
I also had the feeling the first books had a more adventurous feel. The later ones had a lot of politics in them. Also Grayson was barely in one of them, as their kids took front page.
I cant get enough of these Battletech lore videos. Such a comprehensive collection of videos and even audiobooks! Thank you GrimDark for making this universe accessible to us 🙏
The GDL has to be one of my favorite Merc commands, but man do they have the worst luck. I haven't seen so many betrayals and backstabbing's since the last time I binge watched Game of thrones. and As for the vote, C! Snord's Irregulars! Since that's not an option, I guess I'll go with the Kell Hounds. One last thing to add, if you play the HBS Battletech game, after you finish the Black Widow campaign, it opens up the Grey Death story line. If you look closely, you will see the GDL Command Lance in their historic 3028 Mechs. Lori is in a Shadow Hawk, Mcall is in a Rifleman, Clay is in his Wolverine. Grayson, however, is not in his Marauder.
Great review, I select option B. And if FASA was going to sign off on having an animated series made, I'd think one based around the Grey Death Legion for starters would have been waaay more entertaining then what we got!
My vote is for B, Kell Hounds. Some other merc units that would be interesting are Avanti's Angels, Camacho's Caballeros, McCarron's Armored Cavalry, and Lexington Combat Group.
So glad to see a video for the Grey Death Legion. I am listening to your read through of the Grey Death Legion novels right now as a matter of fact. Keep up the great work.
A. ERIDANI LIGHT HORSE! Time to show these viewers a real disciplined military unit! :D What a sad ending to a fantastic merc company. Never knew Carlye died of cancer and his wife was taken out by a grenade. Some pretty nasty political goings ons throughout their entire career including the loss of their homeworld. I would have thought the inner sphere would take care of them with everything that they have done against the clans. Truly merc life is a cold blooded affair. Thanks for another outstanding senses shattering Battletech video GrimDark Narrator! :)
The Grey Death Legion got me into Battletech even though I knew nothing about the setting. I suppose you could say I am biased in favor of the Legion but loyalties are strange. I might vote for option A, just because the ‘light horse’ portion just piques a degree of interest.
I can relate. Outside of a couple of MechWarrior games, I knew nothing about the Battletech setting. At least prior to reading the Gray Death Saga. I still know very little compared to others, but their story was my entry into the setting proper.
I have been playing the GDL since I found them in the mid 80s. I literally wept when I was done reading The Dying Game. I’ve had to replace several paperback books due to reading them so many times. I did not know GDT was made on Glengarry, or that they did that at all.
Good video Grim. I've always been a fan of the Gray Death Legion. Personally, I thought that the conclusion of the story arc was not well done. It is my belief that the Legion and it's founders would have seen through such attempts and taken precautions to ensure that their good name wasn't dragged through the mud like that. Also, I think that the various attacks upon the Carlyle family were 'contrived' at best, and the Legionaries would have not been so easily dealt with. Again, two good choices, but I think I'm gonna go against the flow and opt for A. The Light Horse are worth a video, and the Kell Hounds are more famous, so they will get another whack at a video I am sure.
"Fortunately" I never did get to read the last of the Gray Death novels. The sixth one was the last one I read, and maybe its for the best as I don't wanna see them dissolve and Grayson die.
I mapped out a a what happened next for the GDL that had them making a nice come back based on help from those they had saved in the past they where underground for quite awhile and when they pop up they changed the WoB and whole sphere future again. Hey if CC and WoB can make unbelievable come backs the GDL can make a very logical and we'll planned one
@@GrimDarkNarrator No I agree I brought back a lot of side player and added interest lance mates for the son but an armsmaker with friends at and shares in fed com's largest mech manufacturer, multiple combat trained dropships and crews not to mention 5+ large jumpships do not just disappear unless they are trying to
I could be wrong, but I've done a lot of digging and I think you made a mistake about Alexander Carlyle. You stated that he was on Tharkad when the Word of Blake bombed it, but every bit of research I've done only states that it's ASSUMED he was there. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. But if that's the case, then I was wondering what your source is that confirms him being there? Thanks much.
I'm just curious, have you thought about narrating a dying time? I know it did them dirty but it is part of the saga. Like I'm just curious. And I vote a
Grayson Carlyle appreciates the vote. I wouldn't be opposed to narrating more Battletech but my time is very limited, in a world where I gotta do daily videos, and audiobooks on top of that :) It would have to be a sponsored project.
The GDL, they were my entry point to the fiction of BTech so long ago. I was very sad to see their legacy come to an end.
or has it really? HMMM...
Their CAREER came to an end. Their legacy is still pretty impactful to the setting.
You know, the GDL trilogy also happened to be the first proper novels in the whole BT universe.
@@nyandyn Yup, and they gave a lot of the fictional tech meanings that still have to be dealt with in fiction today. Also, great characters and stories.
(Leslie Nielson) "No, you're right. Having your n#$s bit off by a Lapplander, that's the way I want to go!"
Remember when you used to read audiobooks that covered the Grey Death Legion? That was great.
I member. Those were good days.
I just love how Gray saw a Marauder and essentially thought... "Dibs."
The end of the Gray Death Legion with kind of unceremonious. It was more of a bureaucratic versus a glorious last stand in the Clan Invasion or something.
Even their terrible ending was better than most characters and units got. During the Jihad it was death by footnote for almost everyone.
They had to die that way as they proved that if you last stand them you lose Everytime

This should be the first saga of a battletech movie universe franchise.
I agree, the story of Grayson can be adapted fairly well into a movie, I think. At least the events of the first novel.
