This TH-camr made me realize that most buddhist monks weren’t so innocent. I only practice the concepts but don’t call myself Buddhist.
There are many types of Buddhism groups around the world. Most of them not the same teaching of Guthama Buddha which I followed. Here, there are it's rare to find buddist monks who betraying the path because once they betray their oaths common people do their thing. But at the end it's up to the person to follow the path with dedication.

Emperor Antoku, if I remember correctly from articles that I read because of a romance virtual game that I played...*coughs coughs because not ashamed* they were surrounded by the enemy and he and his attendants jumped into the water. There was a scene in the game with enemy ships and I (MC) was in the hands of Noritsune Taira. I think he wanted me to give him the three imperial treasures. But things happened and I was saved by my love interest but he drowns himself to avoid capture. And the game is Shall We Date Ninja Destiny.

Possible context for the potato dildo: potatoes are in the nightshade family and the majority of the plant is poisonous. For most of history, potato were viewed as food for the lower classes and were associated with lust and profanity. I'm speaking from my knowledge about this in North America and Europe, but I could see the story having different meaning through that context.

It's really interesting that Somedono would have this kind of story attached to her since she and Emperor Seiwa are the start of Fujiwara control of the court, and as you said the ancestor of the Seiwa Genji. So it's really hard to see the motivations of the two groups who controlled most of Japanese history to cast doubt on the genesis of their own power.
Any idea on when the tale started? I found your source on google books (stories only like a couple pages long guys you can totally read it if you want) and they source from the Konjaku Monogatarishu which is ambiguously 12th century.
The only two times I'm aware of the Fujiwara or Seiwa Genji were out of power between the time of the story and the writing of the KM would be during the Sugawa no Michizane period (making it anti-Fujiwara propaganda) and during the Taira no Kiyomori period (making it anti Genji propaganda).
Yeah it's from the Konjaku monogatari, but I don't think we know who the author was.
Konjaku Monogatari is the main source, but there are countless variants. The Shui Ojoden from 1123 was a specifically Buddhist literature collection, and its version has Shinzei straight up curse Somedono with an illness rather than doing naughty times with her (and also Shinzei had been a Tengu for a long time by then). The Tale of the Heike gives Shinzei a much bigger backstory with his involvement with the royal family’s succession dispute as to why he was with Somedono in the first place. Note that most of these tales that mention Shinzei are Buddhist texts, and not of Shingon Buddhism (Shinzei’s school). So even if we don’t know the exact author, we can at least infer the people who thought of most of these tales reaaaaally didn’t like Shingon Buddhism, and slammed Shinzei as a way to slam the whole school. Especially since the royal family sponsored Tendai Buddhist priests more, and they were the rivals of Shingon Buddhism.
