yeah, this mission really shows the terror of the aparoids in various subtle ways, setting aside the devastated city and all, So much of what you fight here are assimilated marines and fighters fused to their equipment, a fate that awaits the general too, if you can't stop it... Indeed if closely examined the assimilated soldiers have big red spots on their armor suits that likeky are where they were fatally shot and thus infected. Something the game hardly draws attention to outside of one short comment by Fox really Lastly of course the fact that Star Wolf decides to team up with you just shows how serious things really are, serious enough that these criminals see it as necessary to aid the heros to keep living-
When General Pepper said that the majority of the Cornerian defence fleet was destroyed, I groaned as I was worried that pirates or some other hostile force would take advantage of Corneria's weakened state and attack it and would be able to conquer the planet. What's worse is that the Aparoids invaded the capital city and assimilated a bunch of innocent people including General Pepper.
One of the most gruesome chapters, with a revisit to probably the first planet a lot of Starfox players got to know, always under some kind of menace. I love the way Assault drives the narrative of assimilation slowly, first with machines in Katina, then with Pigma, who has always been a despicable villain, holding no virtues for himself. Then we get shoved into fighting the apparoided corneria armada, along with that trustworthy general, that's always been with us in every starfox game. Maybe because of all those stakes, the ending of the chapter is one of the most hopeful and beautiful
A year later after his infection however, General Pepper would become gravely ill and forced to stay bedridden. He appointed Peppy as his succussor and that would continue into the story of Star Fox Command. And that would be the last we heard of him. He did return in Zero, but that was basicly the same as 64, so that doesn't count.
Of all the Star Wolf Ships, only Wolf's Ship has its weapons disabled(due to the fact that Wolf left without due repairs), leaving Fox to be the Gunner.

Criminals, maybe. Antagonists, not any more. This game showed me that the enemies of yesterday can be the allies of tomorrow.
Don't hesitate. When the time comes, just act! 💪🏽👏🏽🙌🏽🙏🏼

He did say that an Aparoid armada appeared before mentioning the Cornerian defense fleet.
“You wanna ride on my wing, Krystal?”
Outta pocket for a kids game🤣💀
Man, even andross didn’t do this much damage to Corneria
Aparoids >

General Pepper getting infected was the biggest "holy shit" moment in the entire series.
Such a great scene all things considered. Rivals working together in a desperate situation
The Aparoids did worse than Andross
