OLMO Sintex & Campagnolo Chorus 1st gen RESTORATION

- Today's video is dedicated to Mr. Giuseppe Olmo: one of the most famous Italian cyclists of the 1930s and the founder of his own bicycle brand Olmo Biciclette.
My OLMO Sintex frame obviously didn't always have the best care in its life, as you can see from the number of rusty places. This time we will not repaint the frame and let's just call the flaws the patina effect. While working with the frame, I tried my best to clean and polish the original beautiful color combination and remove rust. I treated the places where the tooth of time and corrosion left traces with a rust remover and tried to stabilize them with a classic varnish.
I used the first-generation Campagnolo Chorus set for the build, which was often seen on the bike at that time. I'm completely excited about Olmo on Chorus… and the first ride confirmed my enthusiasm… it's going great. I hope you will like it too. If so, please click SUBSCRIBE.

Dnešní video je věnováno Giuseppe Olmovi: jednomu z nejslavnějších italských cyklistů třicátých let minulého století a zakladateli vlastní značky jízdních kol Olmo Biciclette.
I have one thats all original ,same paint sceme too, they ride like a dream.
Thank you for watching. Yes it is like dream.
BELLISSIMA, GRAZIE DEL VIDEO CARO AMICO DELLE BICICLETTE
Thank you for your support.
Lovely bike, that reminds me of my old road bike, with an old pre- HG, 6 speed pre-ultegra Shimano 600 groupset (brown and chrome finish) but I did have campag hubs and pedals. I might have had these ones you used, look identical, best bearings in the world
Thank you for your support.
Realy nice restoration... That history...
Hermosa !!!, felicitaciones por la dedicación, la prolijidad y por cada detalle. Saludos
Gracias por su gran apoyo y saludos desde la República Checa.
OMG. I have the same exact frame and I ride it every day for over 4 years already. I also have 2 Olmo Sanremos in the shed and while Sintex is higher-tier model, I prefer the ride of lower-tier Sanremo. On the road Sanremo is springier, Sintex is stiffer, despite having 0.1 mm thinner tubing. In my limited experience, Olmo bikes ride better than Colnago. Well, "better" is relative and highly subjective, of course, YMMV. I've restored my purple Sanremo back in the day, but wasn't riding it often since then. It's going to be re-built soon. As of now, Sintex is a neglected beater covered in rust and patina. Once I'll finish building up Sanremo with modern components and finish restoring 1979 Colnago Super, that beater will get her love she deserves. A love that is long overdue. Superb video, thanks for sharing!
What group are you planning to build your Sanremo up with? I just finished a Zullo build and I went with an 11-speed Athena group in classic silver finish. Working on a Tesch S-22 currently with a mix on 11-speed SR and Record.
@@jamesdelgado2009, Shimagnolo, probably. I intend to use Campagnolo C-Record mirror polished cranks with 11-speed Shimano drivetrain. If that wouldn't work well, I'll use 11-speed crankset from Campagnolo (Athena or Chorus) then. Just can't stand androgynous biomutant look of 4-arm Shimano cranksets.
I can remember when I used those plastic expanders inside bottom bracket shells, to protect the ball bearings from dirt and water.
White Binda straps were the way to go, along with a white Turbo saddle.
Thank you for watching.
Very well done ! I'm happy you kept the paint original ! First gen. Chorus is one of my favorite gruppos ! The crank, brakes and rear derailleur are beautiful ! I wish the modern Campy equip. was as beautiful. Before it was jewelry now it looks like plastic. It may work better but it's ugly ! Thank you Maestro ! Bravo ! 👍👍👍
Thank you very much friend.
Great idea to store bearing balls inside a tic-tac container. One thing looks a liitle weird to me: The frame has internal rear brake cable routing but the brake levers are for outside-cable routing.
These levers can be put both ways, at the bottom I already have it on Gios, so I wanted to try it classically. And it's probably better levers are small enough and you can lean your hand on the bowden... Thank you for watching.
I've been riding Olmo bicycles since 1987. My first one was a Corsca when I was 15. Very underrated bicycle, in my opinion, just as good as Colnago and very smooth.
Thank you for your comment.
Beautiful gruppo, I had the first gen Athena, which looked very similar to this gen of Chorus, I put most of the miles in my youth on that gruppo, this brings back great memories. I love the jewel-like sound of the freewheels back then, not the chainsaw noise like in this day and age.....Keep up the great work!
Thank you very much.
Nice build - those Chorus brake calipers are a work of art, beautiful looking!
Thank you for watching. The brakes are beautiful ... and what's more... to brake!
I’ve been out of the cycling hobby for 20+ years due to my knees. The Olmo name didn’t initially ring a bell for me, but soon as I saw the frame I remembered them. There was such a high level of skill put into the Italian steel frames from the 80’s and 90’s.
Thank you for watching, I also don't know the Olmo brand very well, but the workmanship of this frame is impeccable and beautiful... and goes well btw.
I ended up with a locally made frame (brand is Miele) in Ishiwata steel with Suntour Superbe Pro gruppo and Mavic 330 rims. 98% of the performance of the Italian stuff for 40-50% of the price 🙂.
@@trappenweisseguy27 suntour superbe pro is excellent, I have one set
NOS in the showcase.
Aside from a wonky headset (bike wants to keep going straight) I never had an ounce of trouble from the gruppo. I guess I put so many miles on it that the headset bearings indented into the race 🤷♂️.
Nice job!❤
Thank you for the support, the bike runs beautifully!
muito rara e maravilhosa e essa bike de estrada, linda e veloz.
Muito obrigado, eu gosto desta bicicleta de estrada.
I see you are still using Tik Tak ball bearings😊
Another great build 👍
Thanks for sharing Marek
Love your work ❤️
Thank you Mike, Tik tak brings freshness to my videos.
Seeing that makes me wish I hadn't gotten rid of my old Olmo frame, think I could have created something quite special :-(.
Another cracking makeover sir 👍.
Thank you friend.
beautiful restoration and 100% the correct way to keep it original :-)
Thank you very much.
Keeping the original painting is a great decision. And those beautiful pedals!
Díky Kubo.
Lovely job my friend, such a joy to watch. Great to see the Campagnolo toolset again. As always a genuine pleasure seeing each stage of work and the patience and care taken. Chapeau ! 👏👏👏
Thank you very, very much my friend!
Not only do you have a Campy toolset , you know how to use them!
@@karlnordinger5968 I was very pleased with your comment, thank you.
Great - as always! Thanks for video
Thank for your great support.
Another great bike and excellent video. I love the Wippermann CONNEX chains with removable links. I use them on all my builds.
Thank you very much for support. Connex is very good and especially nice .
love the patina
Thank you for watching.
Otro gran trabajo de restauración!!!
Echaba de menos tus vídeos.
Gracias por compartirlo.
Saludos.
Gracias amigo, no te preocupes sigo sin hacer nada, pero a veces lleva mucho tiempo.
Beautiful video' s. Thanks
Thank you very much.
Nice restauration! The only thing, that had done different would be using also a white wrap for the handle bar.
Thank you very much, white tape is nice for video, but I will sometimes ride it😉
Excellent restoration. Patina looks good. The only thing would be to have put on white bar tape rather than the black. Thanks for the hard work and the video.
Thank you for watching and for support of course.
Maybe not rather black but surely not white! Deep Purple?
great
Great bike and great ride too. Thanky ou very much.
Neskutečný...!♥️
Děkuji za podporu.
Are the cage bearings in the bottom bracket installed the wrong way? Cage should face in. Around 5:35. Very cool bike.
Hi, thank you for your support. Campagnolo cage bearings are different and mainly better constructions. They're for more balls and they're given the way I do in the video.
@@OnRoadVintageBikes Thank for the clarification. I have the same crank set on a Bottecchia Equipe but I'm using a cartridge bottom bracket (frame came with a worn Dura Ace BB). I didn't know that detail about Campy bottom brackets. Great videos!
@@matthewdoyle5645 You are welcome, thank you very much for the support.
nice build, brakes seem to be athena, chorus is less beefy... also the headset...
Attentive observer! The truth is that one brake is Chorus and the other is another(Athena?) . For headsets, do I think they were the same at the time? Thank you for watching the video and support.
Hi there, nice watching your video ❤, just want to ask regarding the bottom bracket coz the bb shell ot my olmo is a bit wide and the standard bb won’t work, what is the size of the bb you put in your olmo and I notice you put the bottom bracket opposite screw to each other
BB schell should be standard ITA 70mm wide. Thank you for your support.
@@OnRoadVintageBikes I’m in Philippines and i don’t know yet where to get one, thanks so much, the mechanic that I went to is suggesting to weld it, can you recommend?
@@dennispalabrica I don't know exactly what your fault is on that bike, but I certainly wouldn't do welding, it's irreversible.
15:48 Me again! 😁 Is there a way to keep the internal brake cable quiet on this system with insulation? I have a Colnago with the same routing ... the rattle drives me crazy! Thanks! >> Znovu Já! 😁 Existuje způsob, jak udržet vnitřní brzdové lanko tiché s tímto systémem? Mám Colnago se stejným systémem ... to chrastítko mě přivádí k šílenství! Dík!
It works well. I don't know what Colnago you have, but the ones I have have a small tube inside the frame for bowden and this sleeve does not fit into it ...
linda biker
Is it bad that i think a brake lever featuring a white rubber hood should be on a handlebar with white tape?
No, not at all. Good idea, but only for exposure. When you ride a bike with white tape 2x, it becomes gray...Thank you for watching.
@@OnRoadVintageBikes This is true, but it is the reason why my bike has black tape and black hoods. Each to their own, i suppose.
