After reaching the age of maturity in March 2004, Melissa Stern legally terminated Mary Beth's parental rights and formalized Elizabeth's maternity through adoption proceedings. "I love my family very much and am very happy to be with them," Melissa told a reporter for the New Jersey Monthly in 2007, referring to the Sterns. "I'm very happy I ended up with them. I love them, they're my best friends in the whole world, and that's all I have to say about it."
Melissa Stern is now a medical writer, married with a daughter of her own. Tuesday attended her wedding. She cut off all ties with Mary Beth when she turned 18, and was officially adopted by Betsy. Besty and Bill have since passed away. Melissa said she had a wonderful childhood and her parents were her best friends. Rick also passed away.
@@petitehippie7064 Thanks for the update. It's great she's had such a good life, but hard to imagine being forced to visit with the oven when clearly she didn't want to. Has she maintained any contact with her half siblings?
I am so glad things worked out for her! I recall this case when it happened, it was a nightmare and I am sorry this was played out in public. Something like this can harm a child. Shame to Marybeth! The good thing is that it helped set a precedent.
Mary Beth made a agreement. And a legal agreement at that! She knew what was involved about the aftermath of having the baby. Also she made Elizabeth and Bill feel sorry for her.I just can't believe they let her walk out the house w the baby. They are the legal parents now! So what if MaryBeth cried her eyes out . That's her problem!
Didn’t the phycologist suggest in her tape recorded records Mary Beth could have attachment problems. It was unfortunate for the Sterns to have chosen Mary Beth for their surrogate. The Sterns were too nice to entertain her, and Bill was too kind.
Stupid, stupid, stupid! In the first place, they NEVER should have let her walk out the door with their baby. In the second, you don't hand your baby over to someone who's UNHINGED!
I Couldn’t stop watching but it was so hard at times: I was so pissed when when the police didn’t arrest Mary Beth when her husband kidnapped the baby out the window. I wanted to yell at them to call the cops when she first came to visit yo hold the baby and insisted on keeping it for a week. I also couldn’t believe the couple gave the baby back when they went to visit. I would have walked tight out of that house.
At 55 minutes in, I don't know if I can continue to watch this...the surrogate is scary, unreasonable, and should not have passed a psych evaluation...and the biological father gives way too much leeway...I wouldn't let her anywhere the baby...legally, she has no rights, and the parents should be able to bond with THEIR legal child...
Yep, he should never actually gave her the way. The first time should have called the police and actually had arrested and taken out of their home the minute he actually gave her. Any rights of actually taking the baby for the week has put him in a legal conundrum
It can not be easy carrying a pregnancy for 9 months. Going through labor and delivery and then hand a baby over. I know that it is not biological y hers but it doesn't feel that way. I can not judge her as I c ouldnt do it myself
They were good hearted kind people. Who would have imagined how manipulative that woman would be! They shouldn't have let her take her for a week though...I mean, what good was a week going to do...the woman had no sense of self....her only identity was as a Mother but her motives were selfish and self centred!
Marybeth wanted to have Melissa for the Sterns because her husband had a vasectomy cause he didn't want anymore babies. Just cause Marybeth agreed to have this baby for the Sterns I don't feel that she had any rights or visitations with baby M. I am glad the Sterns won the case and Marybeth should have given up her rights as a mother.
It was a very hard case for everyone involved but mostly I feel sorry for The Baby. She was innocent in all of this. I remember this case when I was growing up. I'm so glad she is so happy and well adjusted
Cant stand the daughter in this. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Shes always screaming and attacking the police etc. Totally disrespectful to adults. And at 30 minutes in it was clear mb wasn't gonna give up that baby. The sterns should have played hardball immediately instead of giving Marybeth all the power. Should have gotten lawyers involved from when she first said they couldn't have her at the hospital.
It's not the daughter's fault. She was like 10. She was manipulated and didnt understand except that she was told she had a sister and that the Sterns were taking her away. She shouldn't't have been so involved. Her mother did not protect her, nor her dad.
I am 1 hour in and I see Mary Beth as a first rate selfish person who only cares about herself. To say I would rather be dead and baby to. That is sick. What about the other 2 children she already has.. Rick tries to support her to keep his family together. This movie also showed that Mary Beth was a liar. The Sterns had an amazing lawyer. The judge summoned up Mary Beth very well. I am sure the little girl Melissa grew up well balanced with the Sterns
I cannot believe she had the nerve to appeal. If she really cared about her daughter she would have just let her be! God this movie infuriated me. Mary Beth is total narcissist and Melissa would be better off without her influence. Can you imagine the things she's going to say to that poor child during visitations!!!
Why wasn’t the bio mother hospitalized when she threatened suicide? Dr. Stern should have made calls to put her on a psych hold immediately. Mandatory reporting was a thing in the early-mid 80’s right?
I got so annoyed watching this movie, mary beth had no rights to the baby. Why the hell they let her take the baby astounds me. So happy the judge made the right call. Hope melissa is a happy women with a great life. She made the right decision cutting mary beth out her life. You cant make a legal agreement then decide to change your mind. Mary beth was unstable
That judge already had his mind set on giving the baby the Sterns. the sterned lied about not able to have a baby they didn't deserve to get her a mother has all rights to their child unless they are abusive or neglect. Mary jo was either that the judge was wrong
No, the Sterns didn't lied about not having kids and they weren't abusive either Mary signed her rights as a mother when she agree to be a surrogate for the Sterns, and Melissa Stern cut contact with her birth mother Mary Jo when she was in high school.
IDK hormones really mess with your mind, I feel really bad for Mary Beth, its actually normal for a pregnant womsn who just gave birth to feel like that about her baby. I think the father Rick had a vasectomy because HE didnt want more children but maybe Marybeth still wanted more children and this was one way she saw she could have another child and still remain married to Rick. I also think Rick was tbe best husband taking care of and supporting his wife with no question.

This happened right near me! Mary beth went shopping in my neighborhood bc she couldnt go out where she knew people. She lived in brick, snd had to drive llike 10 min into point pleasant to buy groceries so people wouldn't hopefully recognize her. We did though. My friends mom saw her.

She acts like Baby M is a possession property to control not a person with feelings. She has no clue whats best for this baby as a person. She seemed jealous of the Stern's.
The adoptive mother was abusing her rights as a Doctor. She had no right, in discussing the pregnancy with the OBS Doctor. I can feel sympathy for her. It's Ok to agree to be a surrogate. Quite another, when the baby starts moving and growing. That said, she signed the contract to gand the baby over. I've no idea how any woman can do so
Her husband had a vasectomy. Honestly she should have just had in vitro and had her own. She was a total head case from the get go. Threatening to kill her, contempt of court, kidnapping and being on the run for months , dragging her own family and children through all that running and hiding. She was crazy
I believe the appeal court made the wrong decision as it appears Mary Beth is/was a manipulative narcissist. No surprise her husband was an alcoholic. Part well played by the actress though. 👍🏻
