Generally the MVP goes to the best player on the best team. Nowitzski was the MVP in 07 but he was nowhere near the best player in the league and a case can be made for Nash, Lebron, and Wade as better candidates if we went solely by stats, but the award isnt for best player in the league its for most valuable player.

If everyone were a free agent for one season, the best player would be the most sought after player and therefore the most valued player in the league.
