Rengoku's Beef Bento from Demon Slayer (牛鍋弁当 - Gyunabe Bento)

  • Demon Slayer Kyojuro Rengoku enjoys his food, often blurting out "Umai!" as he eats, but his most memorable meal is on the Mugen Train when he works his way through a stack of beef bento boxes he bought from a vendor and her granddaughter. With thinly sliced beef and onions cooked in a savory-sweet sauce, Gyunabe bento (牛鍋弁当) is the predecessor to the more common Gyudon bento(牛丼弁当) we have today. The bento box shown on Kimetsu no Yaiba also included tofu, Japanese scallions, a soft boiled egg, and red pickled ginger. In my quest to show you how to make Demon Slayer Food in real life, I'm going to show you how to make Rengoku’s favorite bento with this mouthwatering Demon Slayer bento recipe.

    With the colder weather coming to the states, maybe some regional soups/stews? Also, I'd love more recipes like this that showcase historical roots in Japanese culture. I love learning about different people and times through food 😁

    The yamakake udon Tanjiro gets from the street vendor in Asakusa would be awesome, but I'm not sure anyone outside of Japan can get the grated yam for it. The tempura they get from the woman at the house with the wisteria family crest was also mouth-watering.

    • @NoRecipes
      @NoRecipes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the ideas Tim! Yea, I think the between the raw egg and the mucilaginous texture of yamaimo the Yamakake udon might be a tough one for most people outside of Japan, but I've been meaning to do more udon recipes, so maybe I'll do a plain Kake udon and suggest yamaimo as an optional topping. Also, noted on the tempura!

      It's enough to make 2 Japanese-size bentos. If you're using a western-style bento box it might not be enough to fill 2 boxes, but the portion size should be plenty for 2 people.

    Hi, it's such a wonderful recipe ! 😊👍, but perhaps would you like to tell me good substitutes for sake dan mirin please ? Because I have difficulties of using them in my country

    • @NoRecipes
      @NoRecipes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Alexander. You can always click through to the full recipe on my website for more explanation on ingredients and what you might be able to substitute in their place. It will be a lot faster than waiting for me to see your comment. The purpose of the sake and mirin is to add umami, sweetness, and flavor to the dish. You could use MSG as a substitute for the umami, and sugar for the sweetness, but there is no suitable substitute for the flavor. Sorry, more questions. 🙃 Is there a difference in taste (or outcome, I guess?) when you add the sauce ingredients separately as opposed to premixing it all and adding at once? And yeah, gonna try this one, too. 😋

    • @NoRecipes
      @NoRecipes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Lynda, you can premix them if you want, it won't make any difference. Just make sure the sugar is properly dissolved so you don't lose a bunch as sludge at the bottom of the bowl. When I'm making this at home (i.e. not for video), I usually just measure the ingredients straight into the pan and skip the bowls altogether.

    • @NoRecipes
      @NoRecipes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used A5 grade (on the Japanese scale) sirloin, but it will work with any relatively tender cut of beef. You ideally want some fat marbled in, but you don't want connective tissue (which can get tough). Most cuts used or steak such as top sirloin, short loin, tenderloin, or ribeye will work.
