Every time new NSO games drop I always think “that defunct gaming guy must be scrambling right now”

it was probably too expensive when it came out but the game was very popular everyone had it

It would be ok without the descending stages which turn it into an unbearable slog

I think it would have been a different story if it had power ups, especially with Arkanoid in arcades at the time, which was pretty popular.

We're up to 24 Game Boy games. Given how gigantic the Game Boy/Game Boy Color's united library is (nearly 2000 titles!), we're still scratching the surface at about 1% of the library.

There have always been entitled, negative, hateful people since the fall.
In the modern era, they merely figured out how to get paid for being ignorant.
Alleyway was a shining sleeper gem in my childhood collection. Thank you, dad.
Where my simpering buffoons at? 🤣

As a kid when it first came out, "Super Marioland" was difficult, I don't think anyone had a lot of gamer experience back then,

Alleyway and Mario Land were 2 of my first Game Boy games, so I have a lot of nostalgia for them. Yesterday I fired up Alleyway and I even finished it! It's very adicting (and longer than one can expect for a Game Boy game).
The best launch game is Tetris, tho. LOL.

I am so excited to finally have Super Mario Land on Switch! Weird as this may sound, it's one of my favorite 2D Mario titles. It just packs so much into its short run time that it never gets boring!
The answer to the QotD should be obvious as far as my personal opinion goes, but from a more objective and historic context, Tetris is one of the most important launch titles to ever exist. Match three puzzlers are synonymous with portable and mobile gaming at this point, and neither would likely exist in the same form if the Game Boy hadn't come with Tetris in the box

    Damn, somebody really hated alleyway.
I loved that old gameboy commercial. They should have brought back that robot character.
QOTD, Obviously Tetris. It's actually still in my original gameboy now.

Tennis is actually the only launch game that still always comes with me whenever the Game Boy does. Of all the original Nintendo sports titles, I feel it's the one that's aged the best by a mile. As for Alleyway, I've always enjoyed it, but I can see why reviewers who were used to reviewing NES games might find it lacking as a full-priced offering by 1989.

I’m just surprised it took this long for Super Mario Land to make it to the Switch. I’d have thought this game would have been on it Day one.

QOTD: I mean I enjoyed Super Mario Land with its new twists on the Mario formula, but I gotta give it to the OG, Tetris! actually just reacquired the game pak a few months ago, forgot how much simple fun it is.

As I have only played Tetris I guess I'm on that team. It'll be fun to at least pop one of these games in and see what they're like, and I'm glad we have more Mario but I'm kinda curious as to why this wasn't there from the start... and if they wanted to save games for the 35th anniversary, why not release these games in April, the actual release-month for Game Boy?
Whatever the case may be, it's at least a little neat that we now have ALL the games that were revealed when they revealed the GB / GBA consoles, since the Japanese side got The Frog for Whom the Bell Tolls, a sort of proto-Link's Awakening game. Wherever we go now is a complete mystery... though I do hope we can at least have a Mega Drive drop soon. Next month it will have been a full year... though Nintendo IS having a direct next month, so maybe that's when we'll get a glimpse into what NSO is doing next?

"Maybe you're Team Tennis?!" 😆 🤣 Sure I'll be that guy. Why not? lol ... In all seriousness I had Tertris and Mario Land when they came out. Played the crap of them and enjoyed them both, and I still break them out to this day before bed every now and then. I know Mario Land is not that good compared to the other main line entry games, but it definitely takes me back to a simpler time sitting in the back seat of my parent's Volvo on long trips to Grandma and Grandpa's house.

I guess all the way back to the beginning, EGM was always rougher on the GameBoy than any other system. Now I've not played many of the GameBoy games growing up, but did try out Super Mario Land on Emulators, and I actually liked it, so in answer to your question, I'm going to have to say Team Super Mario Land.

This is definitely one of those "where you're from" sort of things. When I hear people on the East Coast (especially New York) and in the UK say Mario, it's often "Mare-io," whereas it's pretty much always "Mahr-io" on the West Coast and other parts of the country. I'm sure there's a fun linguistic reason for that, but I'm the guy who brings you classic reviews, not the history of accents.

    • @DefunctGames
      @DefunctGames  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

It's a baseball term for being walked. In other words, you got on base by not hitting the ball, but rather having four "balls" and being walked to first base.
