    Doc, I agree with 2 shoes. The best thing that you can do is to replace the straight zerk, with an angle zerk. I'd imagine that the 90° would work the best. You can find full zerk kit's with multiple types and sizes for about $20 or so. My next point is, even though you saw the grease exit from a bushing, after squirting it from another fitting. You more than likely still need to grease the other one too. I've seldom seen two fittings for the same part, it looks like the top fitting is for the shaft & the lower gets the bushings.

    Doc they make 45 and 90 degree zerk fittings that are much less than $9 that will solve your problem

    Doc the longer lockNlube works on all the zerks except the one that needs the 90 degree. I find the lockNlube the only attachment needed for the other zerks. LockNlube also sells a flat a 90 degree as well. Also do a video on reel to bedknife adjustment and you will really have fun. backlap video would be good too...

    Hey Doc, took my real mower to get sharpened yesterday and asked my guy about a couple of these zerk fittings that are hard to get to and he said the one above the tire is not necessary and the one that’s inside the real housing that’s tough to get to has a zerk fitting underneath that is easily accessible that pumps fluid into the same section as the other one that’s tough to get to. Hope this helps!

    Zerk is the word you are looking for, as in "grease Zerk". I've had one of those 90 degree fittings for about 30 years. I have a Zerk on the back end of my 90 degree fitting so I only use it on those places where nothing else will work and I don't have to swap grease guns or get out a wrench and swap ends.

    Yeah, very nice tip Doc. I'm a retired Manufacturing Engineer and have seen engineers design impossible situations for years. When I find those zerks in locations that are inaccessible, I just change them out for a 90 or 45 degree zerk, problem solved. Zerks are only about a dime each. You do have to watch the thread size though. There are small size and large size thread diameters so you might have to have a few selections on hand. I have a small jar of about 20, it cast me a couple of bucks.

    They sell a gadget for trailer wheel bearings with a piston that's compressed by a spring. You fill up the cylinder with your grease gun and the piston delivers grease as it's needed. It seems to me like manufacturers could use the same concept to make grease fittings more accessible to the end user of the equipment.

      I work in the freight industry. I've noticed in the last year that some of the new equipment, trucks, trailers, dollies, a jockey wagons, have reservoirs with lines going out these areas that need greased. It uses the same concept. When they get serviced the mechanic just fills it up.

    Seems like you solved your problem but another thing we do in the industrial field is take out original fitting and install a stainless fitting for stainless tubing and bend it up and out of the way to a place more accessible for future maintenance.

    All you need is a needle grease fitting. It will apply at a 10 degree angle. They have different lengths.

    I already have red marine grease in my grease gun and was wondering if that would be okay to use. I'm sure it's not ideal but wouldn't see why it wouldn't work

    You can buy a grease nipple set with 90 and 45 degrees adaptors that just screw into the same hole as the original

      Have then both... won't fit on that one fitting. Also, it LOCKS more than a standard push on fitting.

    How do i remove a zerk with no hex head, im stumped

      As I understand, there are some grease fittings that are designed to be pressed (or hammered?) into a smooth unthreaded hole. That may be what you have, if there are no flats for a wrench. I guess that type of fitting would need to be pulled straight out of the hole.

    Dr, thought you should know. Greasing the spindles on a riding mower is a waste of grease, useless. Spindles all have sealed bearings. You can’t get any grease to the bearings. The only way you can grease the bearing you have to pop the sealed bearings out of the spindle and take off the plastic lip on the bearing to reveal the actual bearing. Then you grease it by hand and force the grease into the bearing and push the plastic washer back on. Walk.

      @HowTowithDoc  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've seen that video... however there still is SOME benefit to greasing the hubs even though the bearings are sealed.
