      I guess an American still go to NK on his/her own, but many tour companies will not accept American tourists. And the US State Dept says as much - they say a US citizen can request a visa but that he/she should make plans for their funeral and for who should accept guardianship for children and pets prior to travel. There is thirst for adventure on the one hand and then there is suicidal risk-taking on the other. No American should attempt such a trip at this time.

I can only imagine how many bad and shaky clips you had to choose from to put this together. You really managed to give a nuanced image of people's lives both in the city and at the countryside as well as whats it's like to be on a guided tour like this. Very informative and unbiased!
    If you plan to visit the DMZ from the south side, check that the "Joint Security Area" is included in the tour and not just the DMZ itself! If not you will miss out those blue houses at Panmunjom once again. Hopefully it will be transformed into "memorial peace area" in the future and I think your videos may actually have helped a little to make that happen.

    Greetings Nick, I discovered your channel a couple of weeks ago, and like many have gone through your beginnings, travelled with you vicariously both in countries I have visited and indeed lived in, as well as those I have not. The thing which impresses me most about you, aside from your exceptional talent for photography, and documentary style, is that you, my friend are doing something extraordinary in terms of bringing people together. I've long believed in a global community, one removed from the corporate world and media indoctrination. In my own travels, I too have always embraced and celebrated the host countries, and happily made friends in the same way. Well done my friend. The You Tube world is a better place since you arrived. Wishing you continued success.

      If it was their plan to become more touristic, they should have released Otto Wambier earlier. They are really killing themselves economically for their backwards beliefs.. in most touristic countries the US is a huge capital inflow, not possible for NKorea now.

    The North Korean Regime is desperate for hard currency. It is willing to subsidize costs internally to obtain cash that can be used for external purchases. When utilizing slave labor, this is much easier to implement. Whether or not someone says they are supporting or not supporting the regime, by traveling there as a tourist and providing the regime with hard currency, the person essentually has supported it. If there was a plausible way to use tourism to open up contacts with ordinary citizens and build bonds, that would be great, but it can be seen how tightly controlled contacts are. Because of the tight controls, it is difficult for anyone to act in a news/information gathering role other than saying there were tight controls.

    • @NUCLEARARMAMENT
      @NUCLEARARMAMENT 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Lewis Doherty The USA used slave labor for centuries "legally" and still has a massive prison population that still conducts this "legal" de facto slavery, who are you to insinuate North Korea is any worse than any other nation in the entire world on average when it comes to the usage of "slave labor"?

    • @lewisdoherty7621
      @lewisdoherty7621 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The "de facto" depends on how you define it, but if it is possible to order someone to do something or they face torture or death, then that is slave labor. Just because something that was done in the past not make it right.

    • @IT-fj1nx
      @IT-fj1nx 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Оскар .1 it's not evil, it's what it is. It's that simple. You have a thick layer of western conditioning that makes up your worldview, be aware of that. Are we really going to say North Korea is evil and the USA is not? It's simple minded to brand a regime evil when you are not conscious of why it is the way it is. It could be no other way given the history. Ignorant Americsns say that the North Koreans are brainwashed while they are simultaneously brainwashed to a large degree. I advocate going to North Korea. I advocate seeing for oneself because the only thing you know for sure is true is your present experience. Good and Evil are just ideas. There is only actuality.

    North Korea looks pretty. I just thought it was strange that local people did not interact with ya'll in the group. And I felt like the super market was staged for only tourists to use. It almost like everyone was told to act and be a certain way. Idk, i felt like the government made sure you only saw the good areas and the nice parts not the whole picture of the country.

      But Asians are like that everywhere! Especially when they dont speak your language. If you spoke Korean you could 100% go and start chatting and have a conversation with them. Also, there are videos on youtube made by a singaporean guy who goes all around the country. Even the poor parts have food, housing, electricity etc. North Korea is a poor, awful dictatorship but the lies about the standard of living of North Koreans are pretty rediculous

      China has the yuan

      Korea has the won (NKW/SKW)
      They all come from the old Chinese word for "round".

    I promise there’s a question at the end...
    I’ve wanted to visit the DPRK for a long time now, and I’ve scoured TH-cam for years to consume as much information about the Hermit Kingdom as possible, wether it be good, bad, or neutral. I’m very pleased with your documentary series, and even though I subscribed in the middle of your series, I’ve followed it closely since. Kudos to you, my friend. Being a USA-born citizen, the allure is both tantalizing and intriguing. The meeting between Kim Jong-Un and Donald Trump had me hopeful that my dream of visiting might not be so taboo in the near future. Yes, that WILL take some of the excitement away from it, but anyway...
    Lead-up and silly question: Others that I’ve seen posting videos of their visit in the past have shown meals presented that were basically cheap foods that were breaded and deep fried. The one person that comes to mind was a USA citizen and gained access via bribing a Chinese official. Since your experience seems so different, do you believe that it because of the differences in tour companies (or means of access), or is this likely an indication of an uptick in DPRK tourism?
