    Michael Caine has that air of aging comfortably and being able to tell a story with that slight bit of impishness while still being a gentleman. Reminds me of David Niven.

    Translator had a gig at The Londoner in Santa Monica, probably 1979 - I'd gotten there early, before the sound guy showed up, and so I stowed my drums in the club and went to the office where they had a couch to take a nap. There was a bicycle leaning against the desk. I fell asleep and was awakened by the sound of the bike being moved. "Oh dear me, I've woken you up, I'm so terribly sorry!" said Michael Caine...I of course told him it was no problem and he said "well, go back to sleep...bye bye!" and off he went. What a gent.

He was standing beside some guy who looked up and said "You're John Wayne" and peed on John's leg.

As we waited on a street corner for the light to change, the man standing next to me (whom we had not noticed) said, "Oh, booze! Looks like a Christmas party!" I replied affirmatively, then looked up to see it was Michael Caine who had spoken, looking down at us and smiling. I've never forgotten that encounter.

    I love Michael & I love The Duke. This is such a fun story to hear.
    It's interesting that so many people with diametrically opposed political views still have these fond memories of John Wayne: Michael, Katherine Hepburn, Bruce Dern, Roscoe Lee Browne, Kirk Douglas, Ron Howard, & on & on. It makes you have fond memories of the days when people could have differences of opinions & still be friendly or even like each other. Not anymore. It sucks.

    • @Redamhcs
      @Redamhcs 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Difference of opinion…racism isn’t an opinion. 1971 Playboy John Wayne said he believed in white supremacy and went on to say the most racist things about Native Americans and Blacks. In 1973 he had to be held back by security from harming Sacheen Littlefeather. Bigotry is not, has never been, and will never be an opinion.

    Just to add. Was watching Robert Redfords "The West" On Netflix. Apparently Whyatt Earp ended his life being an advisor on Western Movies in the 20s. He happened to meet a not yet actor, who went by the name of Marion Morrison (John Wayne) on a movie set, and according to folk law, John Wayne modeled himself on Whyatt Earp.

      @@ladraper7134 Get some facts into yourself, bubba. Wayne was 34 years old during 1941 which was problematic for service. John Wayne registered for the draft and was anxious to serve his country. His family status, his age, his injury from his college days, and even his movie studio (which threatened legal action over Wayne's multiple attempts to enlist after he was deferred) all worked against his uniformed service. He repeatedly tried to serve. He received a 3A (family, or "Deferred for dependency reasons") deferment for military service in 1943 and then a "Deferred, aged 28 or over" deferment (1H) in 1945. Wayne did not put in for any deferment, either, the studio did it to him as he was their main star. John Wayne answered the call to duty but was rejected, and _repeatedly_ tried to use his connection with John Ford (director and Commander USNR) to allow Wayne to enlist. He also felt guilt and remorse about not being able to serve. Wayne contributed what he could by his profession and his demeanor and his love of country. You're flipping bullpatties about John Wayne, son.

      That's why I love this show.. they don't have anything like it in America... in the evening they're usually sitting off to the side of somebody at a desk ( ridiculous ) and it's usually one guest at a time comes out and some of them who feel they are too important come out and leave right away.. ( have another engagement )
      This show with them all sitting on the couch is so much more relaxed and conducive to them really opening up and having fun... the format here in America seems rigid in comparison.
      One of the best episodes was with Matt Damon, Bill Murray and the gentleman who played Lord Grantham on Downton Abbey.. can't think of his name... and then when a woman singer came out whose name I also can't think of.. that was a fun ending that she gave to it
