Yes, with the "not" flashing toilet paper it's not only on Greek Islands. I had to deal with that in other countries too; Israel, Turkey, Egypt, Vietnam. I guess there are many more.
@@BrianandCarrie I spent some time in Istanbul - didn't experience that in my hotel, but I did in the public washrooms (one example - on the plaza across the Blue Mosque). Then, four days in an Australian run hotel, in town of Selçuk, next to Ephesus ruins, had to "not" flush the toilet paper during my whole stay.
The toilet paper issue gave me a chuckle as it can be the same down in Mexico. And during the four decades in my profession here, at work where there were foreign clients from all over, in our restrooms at some locations, there were signs instructing people to flush the toilet paper down the toilet and also to not stand on the toilet seat. Greetings from Los Angeles
Great video guys! Your cons are spot on, I live here in Greece now and love it, so I'm not bagging on it either, but when we renovated our home and added on, we installed a nice new huge septic tank and the biggest waste pipes we could find. We flush paper at our place. :) But yeah, in places where everything is so old it's impossible to dig things up and completely redo the old septics - not to mention you might hit something ancient and never be allowed to finish your project! 🙈 So we get it, but travellers need to be informed!
We love our time here despite the tp issue, but people need to know. 😊 Crete is a fun place, we don't think we will get bored here as we did in Rhodes for a month's stay. Thank you for watching and adding to the conversation.
@@BrianandCarrie I don't think you'll get bored in Crete either, especially if you can find reasonable car rental there too. I've been three times and feel like I barely scratched the surface.
Another great video which has inspired me to go. I have just booked a one bedroom apartment for six weeks in March/April 2025. After that I will either decompress for a month back in UK or head over to Fethiye for a similar period 🎉
it is a very relaxed community as is Fethiye. Taking the ferry over to Türkiye is easy and affordable. Thank you for watching and safe travels! Cheers!!🍻
We would hate for you to show up with our recommendation and get something that you were unhappy with. Thank you for watching and commenting! Cheers!!🍻
Great video! I think you will enjoy your month in Crete more - there is SO MUCH to do on that island (it's the largest). Yeah, Greece is no longer a budget destination. It was sooo much cheaper even ten years ago. Enjoy Crete!:)
Love your videos and you guys look so happy! Also I appreciate the cons because I don’t want to plan a trip looking through rose colored glasses and then be disappointed.
We usually get some pushback on our cons or ugly truth videos, but we want to inform those who decide to take our advice and visit a place. We wouldn't want to have someone be disappointed in something that we left out. 😁
Love your videos. Please keep up with the cons & pros! We trust your judgement, hence why we follow you. And find your feedback so helpful when we are planning our travels 😊xx
I watched most of your videos over the years and loved it. We finally started our own slow travel in March 2024. So far we have visited the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Turkey, and Greece, we are on Crete Island until 05/24, and I sure will say hi if I see you two in Crete. 😄
I think I've been watching too many of your videos, because I knew from Day 1 that this spot wasn't high on your list. Lol. Tough to follow up Turkey and being in a so so AirBNB is gonna do that. I agree, a week is MORE than enough in Rhodes.

Nice follow up on your Rhodes trip. One thing about International Drivers Permit: they are cheap and easy to get. Next time you're home, visit a AAA location, bring your passport and your valid U.S. driver license, and they will issue you the International License. It is actually a TRANSLATION of your U.S. license, and you would carry both. It is valid for a year, and good to have, even if your location says you don't need it. You may get conflicting information from different authorities in the same country. I've traveled many times without one, but now make it part of my trip prep if I'm planning to drive anywhere.
International drivers permit are required in most places. You may never get asked for one, but you are legally required to have one. If you get into an accident and don’t have it your insurance may be void. If stopped by the police, again this could be an issue.
This is not true in Rhodes. The car company was very specific with us. They gave us paperwork in case we got pulled over. They also informed us the only time insurance would be void is if alcohol was involved.
Guilty as charged on a Gilligan comment. Good to have the hat. I think you bringing forward "cons" isn't you slagging a location, but for the viewer being "forewarned is being forarmed". $2700 for a month in Rhodes Greece is remarkable, and recognizing that this is a shoulder season and not peak tourist season. Who knew about the no flushing toilet paper - makes this guy pause for sure about that whole potentially stick and gross process (be sure not to eat straight after that!!!). THAT is VERY well worth knowing. Thanks guys as always! Almost halfway through May. Time flies!!
Good comment about the toilet paper! We have found a lot of places around the world do not want you to flush toilet paper because the plumbing is old. We actually took this concept to our RV. Normal rvers have problems with toilet paper sticking to the sides of the tanks or on the sensor. We got used to it in Europe so we figured it might be a good idea and it's worked out very well. 🙂 Anna
Thanks great info 👍 It's good to get an idea of costs in different places. We are programed to think international travel is only for the rich. LOL... we went to Greece for 10 days with our 3 teenage girls. The TP was a very big challenge in the beginning. By the time we left we were used to it. Using the public washrooms was my biggest challenge..lol

Excellent video! Thanks so much for sharing your experience and costs! And I especially appreciate the comment about the toilet paper. I’ve watched your videos for some time and had always assumed that was a requirement in all or most of the places that you’ve visited and just didn’t mention it. So I’m now assuming that it’s only the case in the Greek islands?
Thank you, Tim. Yes, we have only experienced this in Santorini, Rhodes, and we just arrived in Crete. We appreciate you watching our channel and adding to the conversation!! Cheers!!🍻
Re: insurance. For comparison, I got a quote from a well known company's Global insurance in March, for long term travel. I'm 63 and the quote for the Silver plan (lowest) was $2545/yr ($212/mo). I can't access the other plans anymore but I remember one of the higher plans was about $3600/yr.
That quote sounds about right, Barry. At 53 and paying $1850 for the silver plan, it is nice to know that in 10 years it will only go up $700. I'm sure by then, it will be more. 😒
@BrianandCarrie that's crazy crazy travel insurance prices u pay, mod 40's guy here with worldwide travel insurance for £120 a year, not per month! Amazed how Americans can afford that !
tbh that's middle of winter still ! totally different in the summer months and so so much more to the island than Rhodes town, u just need to find it like we did a number if years ago and now go 2 or 3 times a year on holiday there.
You two must have run into the no TP flushing issue before, it applies to a large part of the world. Seems like you would have had that issue in southeast Asia, we did. Get ready for that in Mexico later this year.
Only on Santorini have we had that issue at a place we've stayed. Good to know about Mexico, we're now getting used to it, so won't be a huge deal. Thanks so much for watching 😊
North and very south of the island is windy, the north West coast is very very different to the south east. Surprised u didn't find St Paul's bay which Is literally on the other side of Lindos and drove by in ur clip of driving, or venture down to the south of the island where the 2 seas meet. WiFi and 5G... generally not an issue unless ur up high on the hills so not an issue. 430 dollars for groceries.... take it u barely ate then lol and 268 for drinks and eating out....that's 3 days spending money on our holidays on rhodes lol
$2700 USD for the whole month? That is amazing, we spent $16,000 USD for 4 months in SE Asia, that includes all our flights, 2 weeks in Japan, 10 days in Vietnam, and 3 months in Hua Hin Thailand, we average $3,000 to $4,000 USD per month when travelling, we also rented a car for 2 months of the trip, and took the bullet train 2 times in Japan, and ate very well, and we do not drink alcohol (i am making way to many comments on your channel, LOL), my wife and I really enjoy your videos, keep up the great work you 2!!!!!
@@BrianandCarrie $1600?? Where did you get that from? That doesn't even cover airfare these days!!! We average at least $3,000 USD a month if we are being careful!!!
I'm curious how the costs on Crete are going to compare to Rhodes. The TP thing kind of freaks me out too, but I've seen people get push back when they mention it, as I'm sure you're expecting. 😀 I've heard Symi is really nice like you've heard, and videos seem to support that.
We do expect comments about the TP, but we are here to let you know what to expect if you decide to go. If we ruffle a feather, it is what it is. Thanks, Doug, for all the support!! Cheers!!🍻
thank you for your honest review of my island. Next time rent a hotel room for the period of one week. it will drop your expenses at one third at least of what you paid to rbnb
we had a similar issue in Hoi An Vietnam, we stayed for a week, we really only needed 2 days MAX, how many times can you walk in the old town in Hoi An???
Hi tanks for all your videos, we are going to rhodos this summer, what is your experience with car rentals? Where do you rent your car in rhodos? Thank you
Here is the other video that we did while in Rhodes that may help!! Thank you for watching and safe travels!! 😊 th-cam.com/video/ADCifWpHOU0/w-d-xo.html
Hi Guys, Love the channel. We are going to Rhodes in September and have been checking the prices for ferries to Fethiye. Is €45 pp each way the normal price? Thanks John
That insurance is so expensive. I’m Canadian and my insurance cost $850 Canadian. A year. That’s for medical cancellation and luggage and as many trips up to 35 days each trip as I want.
Ran into the toilet paper issue on Mykonos.🤮Luckliy had better sewerage in our accommodations in Naxos & Santorini. Have learned to ask about toilet situation now before booking. Also learned not to stay in any basement rentals, always damp & takes forever for your laundry to dry on those racks.
Ha ha , all of your cons are the same for me too. People used to accept these drawbacks because of the affordability of holidays in Greece . But now, I think that the prices of the often too basic accommodations are too high ..
We agree 100% with this. We are paying a lot more than we are used to paying and we've been to amazing places. We are hearing that our next destination, Mexico is the same. Prices are going up, but nothing has changed. We will see...
I'm gathering that Rhodes will NOT make "The List" of future Retirement Spots. Since so many of your viewers are older (and envious of your youthful vitality!) Could you include a comment on this in your months end assessment? Even a word or two on hospital services??? I know you can't do it ALL... but it's just a request that I respectfully submit. We're currently on a one month tour of Patras and the Peloponnese and so far , have not found our Shangri-la. Too many potential destinations and islands to get to them all. Thanks.
Hey B & C, Do you use an esim data plan when you travel? Last year, when I was in Italy, I used Airalo for seven weeks. I will be in Turkey in June and July and may visit the Greek Islands and stop in Ireland on the way home. What are you using for your cell phones? Love your channel.
Currently in Crete and paid the tourist tax... just wondering if and how you avoid that, or is it even applicable to private rentals and just on tourist accommodation?
1) Yeah … I haven’t been able to flush my toilet paper since late November. *sighs* 2) So excited for your Crete vids. *sighs differently* 3) Agreed for the most part. That is, a good place for a day, a weekend, a week. But as a slow traveler … maybe not. 4) Crete will be different. It’s big, as islands in the Med go. And, to quote Kazantzakis, Crete’s mystery is deep.
We are really enjoying Crete and our Airbnb is much better than the last, so we are happy to be here. Thank you for all the comments and supporting the channel!! Cheers!! 🍻
A friend of ours once summed up the language situation well....if English is your first language then what do you choose as your second language? You already speak the most widely spoken second language and any other language is only going to be useful in a few countries. I personally would say after English, Spanish is probably the next most useful. We personally always just learn four simple things in the language of the country we are visiting, as I suspect you do too: Please - Thank you - Hello - Goodbye. Oooo for an Asian butt gun eh Brian....!
That is a great way to sum it up! We will be using that in conversation soon, I'm sure. We try to learn please and thank you but even then, we get a reply in English. butt gun...🤣
If you're going to regularly go to the EU and can't get an esim, it's definitely worth getting a local simcard, best bought in the lesser expensive EU countries. Reason being is you can use it all over the EU, with no roaming fees. I have a Greek sim card and use it every time I travel to the EU. I pay 13 Euros a month just for the time I'm there, well worth it.
We have found it is cheaper to stay for a month in a place, much lower accomodation costs, but you better make sure there is enough things to do where you are stuck for a month!! We were in Hua Hin Thailand last winter for 3 months, and we got bored, playing pickleball everyday helped a lot, but there is only so many times you can go to popular tourist spots, and beach days, we loved Hua Hin, and could not have done it without a vehicle, we had a car for 2 months and would have gone out of our minds without a car
Fortunately, we have this channel that we can focus on. We are spending 25+ plus hours a week each so we do have something to do. It has really turned into a hobby.
Hi Guys, Rhodes is a small island geared towards summer tourists. The big plus is the ferry to Turkey. I think Crete will be more interesting given its Minoan history. It is also going to be warmer as we move into summer. Between Greece and Turkey, I would choose a place with no cruise ships. For the TH-cam channel going to places where cruise ships call is good for hits so it makes sense. I am looking forward to the videos from Crete.
We look forward to exploring the island of Crete in the coming weeks. We may rent a car, but we may just find some tours to go on. We want views, subs, and all that helps our channel grow for the TH-cam channel, but we also want to keep things interesting and different from all the rest.
My mother's middle name is Rhodes; I've always wanted to go there! Edit: not being able to flush toilet paper down the toilet. 🤢 That's enough for me to not want to spend any more than a couple of days there. I couldn't do that in Sarandë, Albania either, just yuk! I was there for two months! Sometimes I flushed it anyway because I was just too grossed out. 😂
You missed a lot of good spots like Stegna, Traounou Beach, Kalithea and many more. Elli Beach is one of the worst beaches. Even at Lindos, you went to the wrong beach. St.Paul's Bay on the other side of the castle is infinitely better.
Good points about learning the languages. Americans get a lot of flack for only speaking English. Personally, I think it's out of jealousy that we are fortunate enough to be native speakers of the modern world's lingua franca. I speak 4 languages with varying degrees of fluency depending on how often I use the language and when was the last time I used it. Having lived abroad for over 25 years as well as teaching and being an examiner for some international exams, I am always appreciative when anyone speaks or tries to speak English. Languages are tough. Besides, you would need at least a year of studying to even attempt to be able to function effectively in any country using the local language.. Don't forget, you have to understand as well as speak... The best advice would be to learn some of the very basics, the polite phrases out of respect to the country you are visiting. You wouldn't believe how much it is appreciated by the locals and will make your travel experience so much better...
You are correct about the languages. It is always best to learn something just out of respect. As far as sim cards, we usually do get one at each new location for like you mention $15. Thank you for all the comments!! 😊
Just trying to appeal to the masses, John. What may not be usable to you may be to someone else. It's nice to know that you watched the entire 24 minutes!! Thank you!! 😁

Very informative video, thank you. I was in Rhodes in late Feb for 1 week and was extremely disappointed. Found Crete much better.
We have been in Crete now for 4 days and would already agree. Thank you for watching our channel! 😊
@@BrianandCarrie My wife and I loved Chania followed by Sitia. Enjoy and looking forward to your next video.
tbh that's middle of winter still ! totally different in the summer months and so so much more to the island than Rhodes town, u just need to find it like we did a number if years ago and now go 2 or 3 times a year on holiday there.
There is no such thing as too many comments!! $1600 including flights and transportation isn't bad. We are very budgeted as you already know!! 😂
@@BrianandCarrie $1600?? Where did you get that from? That doesn't even cover airfare these days!!! We average at least $3,000 USD a month if we are being careful!!!
My mistake...$16,000! I was referring to your cost. 😂
@@BrianandCarrie 😀
@@kleerogers Harsh man. He missed a zero. Yikes.
The Airbnb price was for a month.
@@BrianandCarrie yes ive heard that. so you mean you paid one week of that montlhy charge? or you paid one month and you stayed one week?
We stay for one month and get a monthly discount.
we had a similar issue in Hoi An Vietnam, we stayed for a week, we really only needed 2 days MAX, how many times can you walk in the old town in Hoi An???
Very true! It is a really cool place, but 2 nights was plenty.
Great video thanks. With hindsight would you have stayed in Fethiye, done a day/week trip to Rhodes? Perhaps on transit to Crete?
In hindsight we would have. We had a great time in Rhodes, but a month was too long. We also really enjoyed where we were in Fethiye.
Hi tanks for all your videos, we are going to rhodos this summer, what is your experience with car rentals?
Where do you rent your car in rhodos?
Thank you
Here is the other video that we did while in Rhodes that may help!! Thank you for watching and safe travels!! 😊
th-cam.com/video/ADCifWpHOU0/w-d-xo.html
Hi Guys, Love the channel. We are going to Rhodes in September and have been checking the prices for ferries to Fethiye. Is €45 pp each way the normal price?
Thanks
John
Yes, $45 sounds about right.
The toilet paper thing is also true for the mainland. Everywhere I’ve been in Greece it’s been true so far
Which company does Brian use for health care if I may ask? Thank you again!
Cigna Global, there are other options but that's the one I use.
@@BrianandCarrie Thanks Brian!
We will start asking the question from now on. We haven't booked anything in Mexico yet!! Thank you for watching and commenting!!
Cheers!!🍻
Thanks.
That is a good request. We will try to include in our pros and cons section! Thank you for watching and safe travels!!
Hi! Yes, I use Airalo as well and have been very happy with them. Thanks so much for watching 😊
Currently in Crete and paid the tourist tax... just wondering if and how you avoid that, or is it even applicable to private rentals and just on tourist accommodation?
We pay tourist tax wherever we need to. It is just included in our expenses.
1) Yeah … I haven’t been able to flush my toilet paper since late November. *sighs*
2) So excited for your Crete vids. *sighs differently*
3) Agreed for the most part.
Cheers!! 🍻
Good video but you did show the island
Our two previous video's we do. From Rhodes old town to Lindos and everything in between! 😁
Hi Guy's - Question, would you choose to retire in Greece or Portugal ?
Portugal is still budget friendly. Greece is much more expensive for everyday living.
What’s passport control like going from Rhodes to fetiye? I’m in Lagos and headed to tavira in a couple days.
It was like any other on each side.
Which country is cheaper greece or turkey? Fethiye or rhodes?
Overall Türkiye is less expensive although accommodations in Türkiye are on the rise and catching up fast.
Get use to TP. Latin America is the same way. Mexico especially
Good to know!! We have been there but, in the nicer resorts.
Did you know that in Malta you drive on the wrong side of the road?
We did not! We will be taking public transit when we decide to go to Malta😁
TP is an issue in central and Latin America.
We didn't experience it in Saranda. we had a new, modern place while we were there so didn't have any problems.
Mexico plumbing is the same. No flushing toilet paper
Good to know!!! Thank you!
You missed a lot of good spots like Stegna, Traounou Beach, Kalithea and many more. Elli Beach is one of the worst beaches. Even at Lindos, you went to the wrong beach. St.Paul's Bay on the other side of the castle is infinitely better.
Thanks for watching, Tony.

Your medical insurance is super expensive, but that's probably because you're getting it from a US company.
We are not getting it from a US company, and it is a fraction of what we would be paying if we lived in the US.
Cheers!!🍻

Is it bla-bla-bla or blah- blah- blah? 🤔
