Flying changes are one of THE MOST difficult things to teach a horse to do! While it is a “natural” movement for horses, teaching the horse to do the flying change on command when the rider asks for the change is very different.
In today’s TH-cam video, I share 3 horses at different stages of learning the flying changes. The first horse is literally the first time I ever asked for a flying change. The second horse has been working on changes for about 6 months or so, and the last horse, Natasha, is a confirmed Grand Prix horse.
It is so important in training the flying changes, and in everything with Dressage, to always go back and work on the basics. The key to the flying changes is having a good canter quality, obedience to the aids, thoroughness, and a supple and straight horse. When working on the flying changes, it is essential to keep in mind the Dressage Training Scale.
The canter must have the correct rhythm, suppleness, connection, impulsion, straightness AND collection to do a correct flying change! If any one of these elements from the Dressage Training Scale is missing, it will cause issues in the changes. Hi Amelia after watching this video numerous times. I put what you said into action. The lead changes on the small loops was so great. So being very inspired and a little braver I tried the straight line and even though it felt a little rough and probably too much exaggerated aid and bend . My boy gave me three perfect changes and there we where skipping down the five meter line. You are the best !!!🇿🇦❤
We are just starting. It was good to see the beginner horse rush. That’s just what my horse is doing. He’s anticipating the change and then rushes through them. I need to sit back and keep that canter collected! (So says my trainer! )

I hope to someday. Currently working on counter canter. Thank you for such an awesome instructional video. Where were you 20 years ago when I was trying to train my last horse? (joke) TH-cam is so wonderful for learning things that I otherwise only read about in books and magazines. Thank you, thank you!!! I never want to rush my horse into new things, but this is one bit of training that I have been waiting my whole life to get to. When I have been working on the counter canter he will sometimes switch leads in front and then in back when he gets unbalanced, so I think he has the potential to eventually get to flying changes. No rush though. I really want him balanced at counter canter before going on. He used to be so bad at just plain cantering he was crossfiring constantly when I got him, and he was afraid of cantering. (we worked on the lungeline for 6 months or more with trot-canter-trot transitions to get him used to cantering). So I'm happy with our progress so far in 2 years of work. No rush, patience is the key. This video is just fantastic. Actually, I'm a big fan of all of your videos, even the ones that are too advanced for us. They give me hope.

Thank you for this video! I’d love your advice on how to fix changes on a 16 year old ex-jumper 🤣 cause she jumps into it with both hinds together AND gets super excited and tense. She must have been taught them when not ready.

Love too see the progessions! Im wirking on 1 and 2s... 2 are coming along but well the 1s not so much. Im just not quick enough. But ive never ridden ones... do you think its easier if youve done them before just to know the ryhthm? Or is every horse different?

With a horse first learning flying changes, do you keep them straight for the change or start to introduce the new direction of bend before asking for the change?
new direction of bend. remeber start with simple changes!! then shorted the steps of walk inbetween the canter and eventually ask for the flying change.
Thank you for your video, very interesting. I would like to know how often do you introduce the flying change into training of horse beginner? Every session or less? I started with flying changes in february 2020 accordingly to your video instructions and both horses seems to understand it now enough for making them clear (just one hurrying up a bit on one side) but I m not sure on how often I should do it for not get them bored by it. Can I please have your opinion?

Thank you! This was so helpfull! I wonder why the intermediate horse jumped the flying change with his hind limbs together? Is it just a normal stage in the learning proces of the horse? Should you just ignore this and have confidence it will resolve on its own? Or is it a sign something went wrong in the preparation, like not enough quality of the canterstrides just before the flying change? And how do fix it then? How do you teach the horse he is not supposed to jump with his hind limbs together of even worse: with his frontlegs first?
Great question. Yes, jumping together behind is for sure a sign that the canter quality was not good enough and did not have enough engagement before the change. So need to go back and work on the collection in the canter and getting him better engaged.

do you think that i would be able to train my 11 yo lease mare (riding 4x per week), tempi changes with multiple 6mth leases? she also has never done dressage in her life other than leg yields.

I have been working on changes with my Arab gelding for 2 years. I am having difficulties with his right to left. He wants to buck up every time no matter how quiet my aids are. He just seems to have some mental block with it. I have done tons of counter to walk to canter changes on a circle straight to half pass to walk to change. Then I will occassionally throw in a change aid and he still bucks hard too. I just don't get it. Should I just keep asking until he just gives up the bucking should I get after him for bucking. I'm not sure what to do at this point. Im just frustrated. His left to rights are fine. No buck seems easy for him. I even put shoes on back to give him extra support on the outside as he kind of curves in on that inside hind. Any good ideas. Ive taught one tempis before to a very talented mare and they were clean and uphill and expressive.
Great question, it’s hard for me to give advice without seeing him, but it kind of sounds like he’s loosing connection. Have you tried going through the training scale and working from there?
