The red stuff being dropped is Phos-Chek- Its a fire retardant used to help stop the spread of fire. It's very effective and very sticky. I've lived in the LA area my whole life- The Santa Ana winds come every year, but this is the worst they've been in my memory.

Wind speeds in the Los Angeles area can vary greatly. You have to remember that just a few miles from downtown, we have 6.000 ft high mountains, backed by High Desert regions. The city is literally split by a 2.000 ft-3,000 ft mountain range. This all goes down to sea level. The mountains and hillsides can experience 70 -90 mph winds. Also, once wildfires get large, they actually create their own local weather, complete with fire tornados.

The air drops are of a chemical that sucks away the oxygen around the fire. It’s dyed a few different colors to help the crews see exactly where they dropped it. The color simply has to be highly visible. It helps establish a zone to drop the next chemical. It’s like the tracer rounds that the military uses to help aim shots.

    • @robertcampomizzi7988

It doesn't suck away the oxygen. It has a higher (Latent heat storage
Materials with high latent heat capacity can store more energy per unit. For example, phase change materials (PCMs) can store 5-14 times more heat than sensible heat materials. )
It can absorb energy without going into flames...

Wind speeds are highly localized, particularly in Los Angeles which has lots of micro climates due to mountains and variations in elevation. If you just search for Los Angeles wind speed, it's going to give you the speed near the airport which is not near the mountains. If you want to find the wind speeds where the fires are, you need to look up the forecast for Malibu, CA, Topanga, CA, or Altadena, CA.

I think that in another video you asked why California houses are not made of stone. That is because of the earthquakes we have here. Stone or brick buildings needs a lot of reinforcements to with stand anything above 6 - 7 on the ricter scale. Also the fire was so hot that some of the buildings that were brick was burnt to only have some of the steel columns left on the ground. Keep in mind that you see cars on the road that are melted that was caught in the fire.
The first drop that you saw was from a large airplane that can scoop water while it is flying from either a lake or ocean and dump its payload on the fire. There are other airplanes that drop fas-check which is red and a fire retardant. Those drop usually on or around the front line of the fire to prevent it from spreading. The amazing part of this is that they are very accurate with their drops because this is what they train for.
The wind has picked up and we are even feeling it in Orange County. I watched some palm trees sway really close to power lines.

I know you posted this a while ago so you may not see it, but hopefully you do and I can clear it up for you. The winds they are talking about are called the Santa Ana winds. Strong winds blow down from the high desert to the east down across the Southern California low desert, they are an annual event and they can be quite strong. It is just hot, dry air blowing at hurricane force. They are terrifying when coupled with the extremely dry conditions that are in So Cal right now. Any ignition source, could be from a camp fire, a grill or even just a carelessly tossed cigarette can ignite this area like a match to tinder. These fires are then driven by the winds and throw embers up to miles in front of them, lighting hundreds of tiny fires along the way. This is how these fires get so big so quickly. Add to this the inability to send up copters and planes to drop water onto the fires and flame retardant (the red stuff) to slow them down because of the high winds and it's a recipe for disaster. The worst part of these fires is that, at least in some cases, arson is suspected. Well, actually the worst part is the human cost, people who have lost their homes, businesses, livelihoods, pets, livestock, literally everything. Many had their insurance cancelled right out from under them very recently. Hopefully the death toll doesn't rise too much more. Sad, devastating.

Sky cleared up so nicely but yes… winds are expected to pick up tonight. Expecting embers to become fast moving fireballs again.
Im about 4 miles south of Easton Fire. Have a freeway as a barrier but it’s jumped larger distances in high winds. Packed and ready to evacuate
Cell phone towers have a range thats wider than the evacuation zones. Those notices have to reach everyone in those zones, so yes a lot of people receiving the notices will not be in those zones. Be smart. If you receive a Evac Warning, thats when you go to your fire map and look if you are in those zones. If you are not, disregard. If you are in a warning zone, start packing and be prepared for evac order. If you have elderly or disabled.. don’t wait for the order.

As an example of the priorities of the current crop of California politicians, California is planning its first new major reservoir in 50 years but it was reduced in size from 1.8 million acre feet of water to 1.5 million. Legal challenges and environmental reviews highlighted the potential harm to ecosystems, such as reduced flows in the Sacramento River and impacts on fish populations, particularly salmon. Critics argued that higher flow requirements to protect river habitats would make the reservoir too expensive to build, leading to a reduction in its planned size. This is pretty much what happens with every proposal for infrastructure. It gets tied up in the courts and eventually either made smaller and less effective or just cancelled.

More water wouldn't have helped here. The whole scene was overwhelmed. The hydrants that are getting news were attached to three tanks that were filled at the time. Everyone was using them, they drained. The one reservoir that was down for maintenance may turn into an actual story but we'll see if there was corruption, they took too long to fix it. The lack of water can be blamed on the fact that southern CA is effectively a desert. Some places have more than 7 inches of rain a year (definition of desert) but 12 or 20 is not much more and when it doesn't rain at all for most of the year, things get dry.

You clearly don't understand the topography of the areas that are burning! The Basin and Valleys are barely affected. Which make up most of LA.

@@ramonalfaro3252 Technically, fires can occur anywhere. Now is not the time for finger-pointing.

Most of the homes that burned should never have been built. They are located in rugged wilderness with steep mountainside in a semi arid region and get annual 60mph+ winds. The Basin and Valleys are almost untouched by fire.

I hope you never experience anything like what you’re mocking. You’re clearly too immature to handle an emergency situation
