USS Cod Depth Charge Damage

  • Dents on deck, overlooked for years as trival deformation, were discovered to be evidence of a WWII depth charge attack. Cod's WWII crew, attending a reunion, pointed out the dents in a four-square-yard section of Cod's deck plating that were the result of a Japanese Imperial Navy depth charge attack. Shards of metal depth charge were recovered as souvenirs by the crew. If they damage to the deck had been worse it would have been repaired by relief crews. Sun angles on the day of shooting don't do justice to the dents!

      +1 on some stories. But you guys should record your stories on video, for historical purposes. Possibly for use in the visitor center. The Cod may be important, but the men who sailed her more so.
      Get busy.

    These videos are extremely important, because they capture information about these ships while the information is still within living memory. A time will come when noone is left alive who knew these ships when they were active, and it's important that details about them are preserved for future generations.

      Are they any specific compartments or areas you’d like to see?

    • @WhatAboutTheBee
      @WhatAboutTheBee ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@USSCod I am sure you get requests for the main spaces, the same questions you get on the tour. I have a more eclectic interest. In no particular order...
      The stuffing box (packing gland) for the propeller shaft. Is it now sealed or is it still a rotary seal?
      The kitchen, mess deck and ward room. Getting food into the men is critical.
      The heads. Opposite end of the feeding operation. How do they work?
      The battery compartment. Views over the cells. I am sure these batteries are dead now (can't electrocute guests, too much paperwork).
      The navigators station. Was the periscope used to take star sights?
      There are literally dozens and dozens of objects and spaces. Even the most mundane of objects is worthy. Sure, the torpedo room is what everyone wants to see, but how about the Chief's rack?
      What a marvelous ship to tell tales! I sit in rapt attention, waiting for the next installment.

    I toured this sub many years ago, I want to say middle to late 90's? I am pretty sure one of our tour guides was an ex crew member of the ship, am I mistaken? I remember him telling us that when they would get back to port they would have to replace some of the wooden decking as a result of damage from those depth charges you are speaking of. Picked up a great souvenir shirt of the sub that I wish I still had! The greatest generation for sure....

    • @USSCod
      @USSCod  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes that’s absolutely correct. The decking would often splinter or break when the submarine was attacked.

    Welcome to YT USS Cod !! Very happy to see you have your own page now. For anyone wanting to visit the Cod is moored just east of East 9th Street pier in Cleveland, OH. Visiting the Cod is just like stepping back in time to early 1945. Wartime music over the pa system, photos on bunk side tables, they even have the dining table set to feed the crew their next meal. Please visit her if you can, they've done a wonderful job. I do so hope @Drachinifel swings by too.
