Wonderful to see a video on TH-cam with clear explanations presented at a user level by someone using complete sentences expressing complete thoughts without ahhs, ya knows, reallys, and supers. Thank you. Hope you provide more.
Really well done Trevie! Great job. I watched the whole thing with my morning coffee at 3am in California. Afterwards I felt inspired to go get my brand new M1 iPad Pro all dialed in on our new DS1621+. I’m new to Synology’s world and won’t ever use Windows Server again for our 15 person architecture firm. (I’m the IT guy). Our Windows server just failed after 8 years and discovered Synology..There is just no comparison in capabilities. Plus, with the DSM platform I don’t have to become Microsoft Certified just to do basic things. And I can still geek out if I want. Thanks again!
CONGRATULATIONS for the video. You´ve maximized the 25minutes spent. Others would´ve easily used not less than 1h, for the content you´ve covered. Congratulations again
This is pure GOLD. I have a DS1815+ with an expansion chassis and even though I am a long time Synology user, I have really learnt many useful configurations here. Thank you sooo much!
one tip regarding backup migration (around 10:00 ) - use Synology File Station within DSM to access older NAS/device directly, copying of the file will be about twice as fast ;)
Great educational video. A lot of potential with this Synology NAS. Thank you for taking the time to let us explore all potential uses we can get from the NAS. Well done.
I can't wait to do this with my already ordered ipad. Thx for this excellent step by step Tourguide! You (Synology) should bundle up all your explanation videos in a "setup guide" on your website or even better on each system as some is setting it up
Can we get a refresh? In two years has anything changed or been added? Looking for clear and concise ways to continue to free myself and family from iCloud prison. This video was a great start!
Greatly appreciate. I just get started with synology and this is extremely helpful and encouraging. Hope to see more videos like this specifically for all Mac users.
Good straight-forward presentation. I need to move file sharing from old Apple hardware at my work (XServe and MacMini) and definitely looking at Synology
I’m wondering while I’m watching this video but… Have you ever thought about developing a native app for the NAS? So it is not necessary to open the website using a web browser. Great video! 🙌🏻
I’m very close to purchasing a Synology system but have one hurdle I hope it can over come before I do. As a home user and everyone in the house with both an iPhone and an iPad, I want to be able to easily perform a full backup of our iPhones and iPads from time to time. You explained the time machine for our MacBooks, but how can I do our iPhones and iPads? Thank you for any help any Synology experts advice!!
Unfortunately Apple has intentionally blocked direct iPhone and iPad system-level backups without a Mac/PC. The closest alternative is to backup the phone to a computer and then backup that backup to a NAS.
My question is I am setting up my nas for the first time and have two many photos on my Mac in iPhoto. I mend to off load photos as my internal hard on my computer is almost full. So do I move them from iPhoto to synology photos or just build file folders and store them there?
Not the easiest way perhaps but I exported the images (and video) from iPhoto in batches of a few hundred and dragged and dropped them onto the Synology Photos client for import. This ways all the meta-data seems to be preserved and the Synology will organize the data in folders based on when the data was originally created. The export from iPhoto needs to be with the "Export unmodified original" option. Test and see if you are happy with the meta-data preservation.
Thank you for making this video. I am not a Mac person but my wife is, and I have alway wondered about best practices for Apple devices. I just wish you hadn't glossed over key chain, because the last time I heard about it was watching the apple event it was introduced. Now I need to find another video
thank you for good explanation, greatly appreciated. However will you have more set up video just purchased a DS220J and not sure if I set it right as it seems very slow to download pictures from my iphone Thanks
Dear Synology team, I like very much of Synology nas. We want 2 feature into active backup utility 1. How we can take folder/network drive back from active backup utility 2. Perfect, thank you for making this. Similar to you. I have two folders on my network titled “home”. No matter what I do I can’t delete them. Why? And where did these folders come from?
Thank you very much for this tutorial! I'm a new to Synology, and NAS in general. Just purchased and set up a DS923+. and Synology Drive Server. I have everything operational and my shared folders mapped on My Mac Mini M1 and my old Windows 10 PC, but can't get my Mac Book Pro mapped! It can log into DSM, both Admin and my Personal login, but will not log in via Finder or the Synology Drive Client. I get messages that it can't connect. And this happens when I'm connect directly to the lan and over WiFi. New User Confusion here and I don't even know where I can ask questions like this. I signed into Synology Communities and can search for posts, but don't see where I can actually post a question. So I have to use the quickconnect address, the SMB link you mention doesn't work. I'm assuming this must be some kind of setting or Mac Book Issue, but I have no idea at this point how to solve this. Any help would be greatly appreciated even if just directing me to some place where I can get answers.
I'm fallowing along but I don't have a quota limit option on the setup wizard, I am the administrator I don't want to create a new user for a quota limit, when my admin account has everything the way I like. Am I missing something?
I wish to do not pay apple for icloud but what about ipad os or ios backup with Synology? It does not work. I agree I am able to create backup for mac but I cannot do that for mobile devices. I can use third party software but through Synology I cannot. Am I right or missing something?

Hi, when I using Goodnote app on ipad, I can open the file from Synology NAS, but I cannot save the amended files at NAS, please advice how to solve it. Thanks.
Ever since upgrading our MACs to Big Sur, smb connection to Synology NAS are unstable, as are afp connections using afp://. The only option that currently appears to work is afp://. If anyone had a similar experience and found a solution, could you please share it with the class. Thx.
Don't know if it helps You, but I had good success with the SMB3 protocol. You have to disable SMB1 on the Syno by increasing the minimum SMB Level to SMB2 and the maximum to SMB3 (of course). Then connect via smb://... Search for SMB in the Syno Settings. It in the "advanced" section. When connected check on Your mac with "smbutil statshares -a" in a shell. Lookout for the SMB_VERSION Attribute. It says "SMB_3.1.1" on my mac. Hope it helps.
Oh BTW... I couldn't manage to use the finder's search function being forwarded to the syno quicksearch index. This works only with AFP connections. But AFP has become horrible near unusable in the recent years. AFAIK apple dumped the protocol...
I have DS1618+, been using it for years with no issues with PCs. Just purchased Mac Studio with Monterey 12.3.1 and it keeps dropping or locking up. I've updated everything I can think of. Mac and Synology help desk couldn't help. Any suggestions on how to fix?
Looks great. But it takes really really long time to load files and change a few things... I just login DMS and do in file manager. Using M1 Mac air, Mac mini and 920+. enough ram and cache memory as well. Router is also brand new and Nas is just beside me. I think not only my case. I hope it will be better as Nas helps a lot.
When you go to the documents folder at about 14:00 are you going into the local Mac documents folder or the Synology Documents folder through Finder?? My local documents folder doesn’t seem to be updating even though I had it checked? I’m so lost
I believe that this is so that the drive does not show up on your desktop, but rather simply mounts the remote resource so that it is available in Finder. I could be wrong. I often am, but I thing that's the case.
I am having an issue connecting to my Synology Drive (DSM) remotely after I moved. I have a new IP address and do not know how to update any of this info and do not want to lose anything already stored on my drive. I can access the drives locally but have no way of checking anything via DSM. Can someone please help with this?
can someone help me? i want to connect to my synology server through Finder but since DSM7 its not taking my login information. it just doesnt connect.
Great Video Travie thank you. I encountered an error message when I try to connect the Syn drive client (12.40) , says “Connection failed. Please check your network settings and try again”. I have no problem in connecting to the NAS via DSM within the network and from outside. Where am I going wrong. I read there a few others facing a similar problem, but no answer has been offered yet in the forum.
After the 'Set up basic information' screen, I don't get 'Configure advanced settings'. Instead, I get 'Encryption' with different values. I wonder where I might have gone wrong? Thank you.
When using AFP (DSM 7.0) with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and macOS 10.14 Mojave, I fail to delete any file on Synology. It looks like the file has been deleted but it's still there after refresh. The log shows these clients has delete the file.
You can use Synology apps like moments and ds photo on iPhone and iPad…..with DSM 7 release I believe best features of moments and ds photo have been synergised to give a superior ds photo application, so would wait for dsm 7 release and then backup photos using the updated application
For complete backups you can choose from iCloud by wifi or iTunes/Finder by usb. All other solutions are partial copies of specific info. This is a limit within iOS.
One thing I'm worried about before upgrading to Synology Drive is if it correctly synchronizes macOS Finder tags. The older cloud packages (Cloud Station) synchronized those perfectly. Does Synology Drive support this as well?
When using Synology Drive and syncing it to a folder on my mac, where will the file be saved? I want the file to be saved only on my NAS and not on my local computer to reduce disk space. Thanks!
You designate the folder that Synology Drive for macOS uses. All data in your SynologyDrive folder on macOS will sync with the SynologyDrive folder on your Synology. Synology Drive for macOS does not have file streaming yet, so you can't selectively free up space on your mac. For now, it's all or nothing.
To save a file on the NAS only, mount the NAS with SMB, and save your file in a directory other than your SynologyDrive folder. The file will then be on the NAS only.
Thanks for that great presentation & update. Unfortunately my most desired feature is still missing: The on-demand Sync. Since I cannot store all data on my mac, i am still forced to use other solutions (in my case microsoft onedrive). I'd be happy to see that this feature will be released in the near future (apple feature request sent).
Thanks for these explanations! As a new user on MacOS, it's not easy to work with my DiskStation as I'm used from Windows. I connected to it as described here, but when opening files, not all apps seem to be able to write back onto the NAS. For example, I open a video from the NAS... it opens in QuickTime and I can do some modifications, for example rotate. But QuickTime can't save the video back to the NAS, only to the local drive. This would be a reason for not switching to MacOs, if there is no standardized way of working with my NAS from all Apps. Am I missing something?
Good, very good Trevie! But English is not my first language, and you speak too fast for me. I'm french of Quebec. It's hard to follows the explanations and the text for translation. Your presentation is so interesting that I wouldn't want to waste an iota of it. What you offer is very important before I configure my new NAS in the most efficient way. Thank you and I look forward to your future presentations.
I remember whenever there is a new Mac OS version then the Synology TM will have to start over, and these days we have our photo and doc at the iCloud so I no longer using TM.
...and what about Backup now? Supposing "TM" means "TimeMachine" how can you omit a backup when you start using cloud services? What if one of your devices starts deleting things from iCloud? Or your AppleID is suspended? Where do you get your data and Fotos from? Always make a backup! Whether storing locally or in the coud.
Well, I have powerful Macbook Pro and I have been thinking about Synology NAS, but then I found QNAP Thunderbolt 3 NAS solution and I have to say, THIS is really a performance beast ;)
There is no complete iPhone backup solution no. For that, you still need to use iCloud backup. But you can offload all your Photos from the camera roll (and also iCloud Photos) and backup everything using Synology Photos instead. Then there is not going to be much left to backup with iCloud Backup. That way you don't have to pay monthly only to have all your photos backed up. And you still have the option of managing them through the Synology Photos App for iOS and iPadOS as well. I have just moved all my photos there and it's good enough if you don't need any advanced editing features and such! And of course you should also have a backup from the Synology going in case of corruption or dying disks. For example to an external HDD connected to the NAS. If you want to be *really* secure, that external HDD should also be cloned to another physical location. Either by syncing through the internet. Or just by cloning the data to a second external HDD and move it to that location on some kind of cadence.
Great presentation. The information on migration from Time Machine was helpful. I do have a question... I have a USB drive that has been used for Time Machine on a MBP, I have attached it to the DS920+ and wish to transfer the Backups.backupdb files to the newly created Time Machine backup folder I created on the DS920+ as shown in the presentation. Unfortunately it does not like the format when copying. Is there a work around to get the previous backup files integrated into the new backup folder on the DS920+?
I can answer that question for you. Since that backup was crated on a disk directly connected to the computer by usb, it uses a different format for saving time machine backups. There unfortunately no way to make direct connected backup to a network backup. You need to start a new. Hope this helps. Have a nice day, John
@@macjonte Thanks John, I suspected it was a format issue. I have a feeling there is not an easy way to do this. I plan on just recapturing a new full backup using the DS920+ time machine and delete the previous time machine back-up that I used on the USB connection.
Can someone enlighten me, the first clip he showed that we can access files from the server through finder app. So whats the point of having synology drive in the finder app also? Is the first cloud link & synology drive the same thing? So when you edit on finder for eg on the synology drive, it sync back to file in the first clip, not sure what you call it but seems like a ip address file storage?

Hi! Question: does saving files on the MacOS desktop of Synology Drive still take up space on iCloud?
Dear Synology team, I like very much of Synology nas.

Synology Drive for macOS desperately needs file streaming!
Not possible because apple provides API only to Google and maybe some others such as Amazon. Try to find on their forums. I was shocked by this fact.
It does now

Importing notes from Apple's Notes and Reminders apps into Note Station would be sort of cool, easing migration.
Pleas elaborate a little slow on minute 9:50
Where is DS GET ?? 🤔
I learned a lot of things from this video! Thank you, Travie! 🙏🏻
It’s an excellent video
Is there a seamless way to back up IOS to a Synology NAS without dividing your photos, etc?
Question, can you map a drive on Mac as shown and use Synology Drive at the sametime, I thought it was one or the other?
Yes the Synology Drive folder on the Synology is just a regular folder inside your home folder
Have a nice day,
John
Synology Drive is two-way sync with a local copy of everything. Connecting to the NAS with SMB is just accessing the data on the NAS.
Drive support M1 chip?
