      I like that he talks "too much," the more he talks, the more information you can gather about the job he's doing and what to look out for if you're doing the same job in hand.

    Very nice explanation. I did learn a lot on this one. Thanks mate!
    Here in Costa Rica we get our cars tested for emissions every year and they're a pain in the *** to pass. Specially for old vehicles like mine. And they test it both at idle as in high rev 2500rpm. Surprisingly enough my 98 S10 truck still has the original Cat and it still works. after 400k km

      I'm a compulsive parts changer, Oil change every 2500 km. High octane petrol and never revving past 3000rmp have paid off.

    • @bodgitandleggitgarage
      @bodgitandleggitgarage  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      chungaleta1234 it pays off big time I tell people to change the oil regularly at least once every 5000 miles if you do that you will certainly prolong the life of your engine most people don't listen lol

    I need help. I got a scanner says p0420 bank 1. Same as urs and trying to figure out to see if its just a sensor is bad or the cat. Bank 1 sensor 1 reads 3.2 V. Then bank 1 sensor 2 reads .640 V. But should the scanner say bank 1 sensor 2. Or is it just the cat

    Good info right here. Got the P0420 code on one of my Toyotas. Originally had a too rich code too - replaced the MAF and it went away. Weirdly briefly got a too lean code after that, cleared that and it hasn't come back. Now just the P0420 so it's almost certainly the cat at fault. I did put some Cataclean through it a few weeks ago which obviously didn't work. Tempted to throw some lacquer thinner in in the amounts other TH-camrs have tried with success, as it's a super high mileage car which I'll use for parts if it fails its MOT royally. I assume it's gonna fail miserably on emissions with that 420 code.
    None of these tools (or know-how) available to me unfortunately but this vid along with some others have taught me loads about cat converters. Thanks!

    • @WitzyZed
      @WitzyZed 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Similar situation here. Original CEL didn’t refer to the cat system efficiency below threshold, only indicated that I would need bank 1 sensor 1 02 sensor to be replaced. One day later CEL came back on P0420. Would a bad sensor have hidden this cat code or is this likely a MAF problem? I bought some MAF cleaner hoping that might save me a converter purchase 😞

    I have a peugeot 207 showing the 1st 02 sensor alternating as it should and the second is almost a mirror in terms of frequency but half the amplitude does that confirm the cat as faulty still?

      it might mean your cat is on it's way out you will have to test it properly also you can test each of your O2 sensors by making the car go rich and lean and seeing if they will respond quick enough

    A good Italian Tune-up can bring a cat back to life sometimes. Every other month, I take my mother's Passat out on the highway and run it nice & hot for 30mins. Eventually it will need a cat, but for now, this keeps it off for a couple months at a time.

    • @bodgitandleggitgarage
      @bodgitandleggitgarage  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thomas EXOVCDS yeah we did try a few things on this first but just too far gone replaced an engine in this car in another video with a dead cylinder that didn't help the cat with all the fuel going through it

    • @Beany2007FTW
      @Beany2007FTW 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A bit late, but the flipside of that is that if you're giving it an italian tune up a bit late in it's life, collapse of the cat is a definitely possibility - and that's a bad thing.
      When you're going uphill, and start unexpectedly decelerating from 70mph in traffic.
      New cat in and it felt like it a set of lumpy cams in it, much better top end performance.
      (Source: Ford Puma and a stupid, cheap owner - although the cat was only £100 so not too bad, really)

    • @raymondwallace1031

    What Cat cleaner would you suggest? I have an 02 Camry LE and it runs fantastic, no loss of power or anything but a few weeks ago my check engine light came on and I was finally able to get it checked and it came back PO420, of course the technician at Autozone instantly said I need a new Catalytic converter and she had one in stock for $550... Obviously I didn’t jump at that idea and instead started doing a little research, and I keep seeing a “front” catalytic converter that bolts onto the manifold and a “rear” catalytic converter. Idk how to know which one I’d need....but I’d obviously prefer to start with trying the cat cleaner you mentioned at the beginning of your video before anything. Sorry for the long response and hopefully you can be of some assistance, thanks buddy!

    Front o2 is .645 (+/- .050) almost constantly. Rear o2 has a wave pattern .1 to .9 . Brand new (4th time) "over powered" converters. Does that mean the engine isn't running properly or theres an exhaust leak? No other codes.

    Here in California we have strict emissions laws. A test has to be done on the car every 2 years. It sounds like the emissions laws are strict where you live.

    • @bodgitandleggitgarage
      @bodgitandleggitgarage  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      1970chevelle396 hi mate yes yes the rules here for catalyst emissions is strict when the car is 10 years old have to test it once a year when it is newer it gets tested once every two years but we don't have a plug and play in here what they do in the test centre is put an external pipe up the exhaust and read the emissions coming out of the tailpipe I know people have suggested you can trick the computer by putting resistors in the O2 sensors which will turn off the lights but it still will not a pass a missions here as they read them coming straight out of the exhaust pipe

    • @1970chevelle396
      @1970chevelle396 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      bodgit and leggit garage Here on a new car it doesn't have to be done until its 6 years old. After that its every 2 years. 1976 and newer cars have to be tested. They put the car on a dyno to put a load on the engine while its being tested. 2000 and newer cars they just check to see if there are any codes and that is it. I have the license to test cars, but I don't work for some place that does it. Its not worth it because the government is investigating you all the time. If you make one very small mistake, you have to pay a fine and go to a citation school. Thats why I've never actually tested cars before. California has the worst emissions laws in this country.

    • @bodgitandleggitgarage
      @bodgitandleggitgarage  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Arts&Trusts hi mate it all depends on the type of driving you do if you do long journeys and drive it often it will look after itself short journeys not letting it heat up properly kind of does the damage there is stuff out there you can put into help but I don't know if it really works scientifically but a good hard drive every now and then does more than anything

      opl500 that might work to take the engine light off but you were still have a problem with the emissions on the NCT test over here they do not just plug it into the computer they put a pipe in the exhaust and check the emissions coming out so would not work for the test

      Hi mate you'll have to do some testing if you've got a oscilloscope or goods can't all have a look at your O2 sensors make them go rich and lean and see if they respond also you can do a back pressure test to make sure your cat isn't blocked he's with the first things I would do in this situation

    Hey there, I was wondering if you could help me with my 2010 Aveo5. I only have a P0420 code, but its a hard start (like engine misfire) and kinda noisy when accelerating. Could it be a Spark plug/misfire problem or do I have put out more money for a new Cat than what I paid for the Aveo?

    • @bodgitandleggitgarage
      @bodgitandleggitgarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi mate yes it sounds like you've got a misfire issue easiest way to check is just start the engine remove one coil pack or HT lead at a time and see if the engine changes note if it doesn't change note you know you have an issue with that cylinder then you can check the spark plug coil pack etc

    • @bodgitandleggitgarage

      Is the O2 sensor is switching up and down and basically copying the first O2 sensor you can be pretty much certain the cat isn't working providing and the car is in closed loop you can check the heater circuit on the O2 sensor you can also force the car to go rich and lean and see what happens with the senses

      I agree with you about the second bit yes they definitely don't last as long as a genuine cat as regards the first bit it's all fine the car has just passed the NCT last week so nothing wrong with the cat the emissions O2 or anything

  • @8ile
    @8ile 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Take cat off, and shove a pole and hammer up it repeatedly until cat is empty, or cut open the bit that goes against the body, empty it out and then get it welded back up. Will have an EML light on, but no problems. If you have a newer car you can get the O2 sensor mapped out.

    • @bodgitandleggitgarage
