I love, love, LOVE this woman! I’m gonna brag a bit here though. Back in 8th grade I was going to school on a military installation in Colorado. We were holding a very special presentation for Black History Month and we had to invite two people of color that had made an impact with their lives. I chose Colin Powell and this AMAZING woman Shirley Chisholm! I wrote them both letters, explaining what we were doing, and asking if they would honor us with their presence. I got the typed reply from Colin Powell that was likely done by an assistant and that’s okay, but Mrs Chisholm actually wrote me back! She wrote me on the nicest stationary, saying she would love to attend but was living in Florida and due to her age and the fact she wasn’t living like a typical famous person (with a ton of assistants doing her work) and it wouldn’t be in the cards. She thanked me for writing her and thinking of her as a celebrity and said she was just doing what she felt was right. I still have that letter that was sent to me some 26 years ago! I will cherish it till the day I die. When she is brought up these days and the kids don’t know who she is or why she is famous I will always take the time to speak of the wonderful things she did! It would have been great for her to have gotten the medal while she was still here on earth but I honestly believe she never would have been honored had our first African American president not done it himself. She paved the way for so many people. As long as I draw breath her name won’t be forgotten!
@@josephinebournes8212 thank you for seeing the beauty in it that I did! She was a wonderful woman, a role model for young women and girls! Sadly, there are people who’ve never heard of her, and that is inexcusable!
I grew up in NY during those times, and Rep. Chisholm was one of my heroes. And with all due respect, I'd like to correct one thing said in the video: while she wasn't afraid of many things people thought she should be afraid of, she herself said she wasn't fearless. Courage is going forward despite your fear, and this she did every day, in the face of threats against her life. She also said that she wanted to be remembered not as the first black woman elected to the U.S. Congress, but as someone who tried to make a difference. I have a picture of her in my kitchen, where I can see it every day. She continues to inspire me. I hope viewers will search her name on TH-cam and watch her speeches and interviews. She was incredible.
Yes. My favorite Shirley after my mom. Both Shirleys share the same spirit and are from NYC. Mom took the same Rosa Parks page in Pensacola, FL on her way to work by not giving up her seat to a white male and the white bus driver defended her. God given courage of women like Truth and Tubman et al. should never be suppressed. Amen.
Im learning about this wonderful woman today and i for one am greatful but sadden that her name and works are not being tough in the So called American history that are in the text books throughout this country
Had the pleasure of meeting this woman . Shirley and Al Van were big in the Brooklyn democrat machine. Especially after Shirley became Brooklyn congresswoman .

An idol I had the immense joy to meet in '72 when I was at Spelman College, She was a generous, caring woman who wore grace like a crown. 💙💙💙🥰👏👍

Just heard her in an interview tell Herstory about her and George Wallace. Very interesting. She was extraordinary.
It's funny they never taught us this in schools I remember my history teacher in high school said Jessie Jackson was running for president
She was SUCH a badass, I’m happy to see her story being brought to the public, she was a true African American Hero.
