A friend of mine asked Damon about his WR at a Monster Jam event. He said aside from the engine being balanced and hand-assembled, it was surprisingly stock except for Boyesen reeds and the Pro-Circut pipe with clean-up porting. And the works suspension, of course.
Go watch the 1991 500cc nationals with Bradshaw and this bike. 3rd,4th,3rd,7th,3rd,3rd Insane! He rode the shit out of it against the words best. Elephant Balls.
I have this bike 1992 my favorite trail bike. Also have an 86 yz490. The bikes are very different. The wr500 is a better bike by far. Keep up the good work gang.
I bought a brand new YZ 490 in 1988 and had the boys at Race Tech do their magic on the engine and suspension, and put one of their linkage shifters on it , which totally solved the shifting issues. I also dropped 2 teeth on the rear sprocket and installed a white brothers easy clutch, which reduced clutch pull to about the same as a 80cc bike. I replaced the 40mm mikuni with 38 mm carb from a CR 500, way better throttle response! I loved that bike so much I sold my Modified KX 500! Looking at that WR 500 makes me wish I was young again! 😎🤘☠️

I remember Yamaha did the whole 80-250cc fully Damonized YZ’s in 92 or 93 some people hated the graphics/colour scheme that year but imo all the 90’s decade bikes were the best looking loved the Damonized YZ’s looks of that year. And man is that one sweet 500 2t would’ve loved to see Bradshaw ride his he was truly an amazing rider.

I think it was 1993 when I attended the MX Des Nations at Cosy Creek Manjimup Western Australia and I watched one of these flogged around trying to compete against Jean Michel Baile on his factory Honda 500. No one had a chance against him on any bike but I have fond memories of the air cooled WR trying to keep up. I can’t remember which rider or country he was riding this beast for but I remember I focused in every time it went past. I saw a few of these pass by for sale cheap as. What a shame I didn’t snap them up.
A quick story about Damon Bradshaw. In my younger days I lived in Idaho and rode a lot. Some other cross and lots of trail riding. Me and some buddies decided to go to a little town called Mountainhome and show up for an open practice at Mountainhome motocross track. We were all amateur riders. As we lined up for the gate drop, none other than Damon Bradshaw was lined up next to us. We were in shock and awe. He proceeded to lap all of us, jumping over our heads. Lol. This was way after his retirement and he was down to have some fun. It was really awesome to be in his company. Anyway, beautiful bike. You always have some amazing vintage machines on here. Back in the 80's, I first tried a friends clutch bike when I was 6 or 7 and it didn't go well. I popped the clutch too fast and it went forward like its supposed to, the only thing is, my other arm went flying off like riding a bull. I held on for abit but lost control, so me and the bike both went smashing into a near by van, keying all down the side of it. Since then I've had a love hate relationship with them...lol. My friend who owned the bike had a picture of Damon Bradshaw winning the championship and that had me hooked. Got to see Damon nearly win again coming out of retirement in 2001 Toronto Supercross. My latest bike is a KX450...great channel, keep up the good work Kaplan.
I got a good deal on a 1980 cr125 from a dealer it was ridden one time and the rear fender had a white line all the way across it, a guy bought took it home a guy took it home started it gave it to much throttle and popped the clutch and was suddenly laying on his back he took it straight back to Honda and sold it .
When the camera swapped the image I had looked away and then back and it had the pipe on the left side...for just a brief second I had to rollodesk my skull to remember hey they didn't have two pipes or one exiting left side.🙊 Nice one🇺🇸 🤔👍🇺🇸

Big Bore Beauty! I raced a KX 500 at the time, but this bike came out and I loved it! Saw Bradshaw ring it out at Broome -Tioga, but if memory serves me well, Doug Dubach rode one as well.
I believe you're correct,I might be wrong but i think dubach's mechanic first made one for Doug to race and Yamaha American took it form there.damon rode the wheels off that wr.what in the most part was a bike anyone could have built.p.c motor.
Oh boy. I rode a early 80s air cooled YZ 490 quite a few times and I can only guess how awesome this bike is in comparison to that- What I would give to hug that thing thru some long stretches of loosely wooded fields.
22 years ago I had a chance to buy one but trying to source parts I just couldn't deal with that I mean it was a really clean bike I wish I would have got it looking back now but I ended up buying a 1986 YZ 490. That is one beautiful WR 500 😍
My main Favorite thing for me about this WR 500 is that it's air cooled! 😎

About 23 years ago I received an inheritance and bought one of these bad boys. I had a lot of fun on that bike.

I had a ‘92 WR 200 and bought it new from the showroom floor. It was smooth like butter. We nicknamed it “the white elephant”

I saw Damon rip around Washougal on the WR500. I believe Doug Duboch was the other rider. They have a unique sound .

Other than the magenta, I like the colors. Yamaha sure liked their magenta in the early 90's, not a very manly color, IMO.
