- Scientists just figured out something NEW about tardigrades (my favorite animal) and it might help humans survive intense radiation. Here’s what’s going on...
Tardigrades are microscopic and totally awesome. They can survive crushing pressures, deep freezes, and decades without food or water. They can also survive insane amounts of radiation, which has confounded scientists, but now, they think they know how this tiny animal is doing it... and how that insight might apply to you and me.
I just love these creatures. Maybe my favorite science story ever is how tardigrades ended up on the moon… but that’s a story for another day, so subscribe for more!
This video is part of Huge If True, our optimistic series about science and technology.

When I was a teenager my parents bought me a microscope and I found some Water Bears in moss in the garden. I'm now 62 but I still love to look at nature. I love your videos.
They're surprisingly prevalent, aren't they? Really fascinating little creatures
I had the same experience with my first microscope.
Why are they also known as "water bears" though? Is it their physicality that resembles a bear and how does water come into the equation?
@@little.bear344yeah it's because they look like bears, and they kinda love living in the water, that's your answer
I love how you’re so clearly in love with science
Careful, this is usually how spiderman villains get their start!
@captainmeow2771 😂😂 your comment made me laugh for some reason
Now we'll have to watch out -- along with our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man -- for Doctor Octopus' successor, Professor Tardigrade.
I gotta be a nerd; she’s turning me the opposite of off .

Not really, one of their biggest predators are themselves

Technically, since that tardigrade was birthed in space it is the first alien species we have come in contact with
Omg
Extraterrestrial being*. An alien species can apply to any species we newly encounter. Sorry i couldn't resist being semantically pedantic
@@crestothegecko6279 alien to earth
I love this fact!!
the food that astronauts ate and turned into shite are still human shite, not alien shite.
This is why I’m happy these guys are microscopic 😂

One of the main characters on the TV series "The Ark" is a clone who has tardigrade genes in her DNA, specifically to increase her radiation resistance for space travel.
I watched a little of that show. It looks interesting 🤔
My favorite thing about them is that they scratch their backs on other microorganisms.
WHAT?! 🎉❤😂
Really? Awe 😭
Just like true bears billions of times their size rubbing their backs on trees.
AWW THATS ADORABLE ❤❤

Your genuine enthusiasm shines through and is contagious. You are a very good teacher.
It's surprisingly refreshing to hear someone else say Tardigrades are their favorite creature as well!!! Most of the time when I say it the other person has no clue what they are..
Same!
It’s not really surprising - look how many adults fail basic questions like:
• “Who are the President and Vice-President of the United States?”
• “What is the capital of North Dakota?”
• and so on… just look at videos of cops who think they’re above the law they enforce, or politicians who can’t manage to string a coherent sentence together…
Being smart isn’t exactly rare, but it seems to be a fading quality.
Same here 😭😭
Yeah, my kid saw one in a book when he was 3 and it’s been his favorite animal ever since. Just need more tardigrade plushies.

They're the capybaras of the microscopic world.
Tardigrades are my favourite animal too. The are little blissful creatures that just sleep, eat and reproduce.

Evolutionists: Don't look at me, I have NO freaking idea.
😂😂
The hell is an evolutionist?
@@im_aleey really? This is beyond you? 😬
@@im_aleey guy who believes in evolution and no god.
The answer is, God didn't create anything.
Wouldn’t this also mean that if the tardigrade cells mutate and become cancerous, they would also be harder to kill with traditional methods?
Maybe… but in that case we’d likely look to increase the radiation in that sort of treatment or also look to operations yo remove the tumours if possible. 🙃
Curious how this adaptation emerged.
That's the neat part: that shield AVOIDS those kinds of mutations.

Tardigrades, also known as water bears or moss piglets, are microscopic, water-dwelling animals known for their remarkable resilience. Here are some key points about them:
### Characteristics
- **Size**: Typically measure between 0.3 to 0.5 mm in length.
- **Body Structure**: They have a segmented body and eight legs, each with claws.
- **Habitat**: Found in a variety of environments, including soil, mosses, lichens, and even deep-sea sediments.
### Resilience
- **Extreme Conditions**: Tardigrades can survive extreme temperatures, from just above absolute zero to over 300°F (149°C).
- **Desiccation**: They can withstand dehydration by entering a state called cryptobiosis, effectively suspending their metabolism and allowing them to survive without water for years.
- **Radiation and Pressure**: They can endure high levels of radiation and extreme pressure, making them one of the toughest known organisms.
### Importance
- **Scientific Research**: Their resilience makes them a subject of interest in studies related to extremophiles, astrobiology, and potential applications in medicine and biotechnology.
- **Ecosystem Role**: Tardigrades play a role in nutrient cycling and are part of the micro-ecosystem in their habitats.
Overall, tardigrades are fascinating creatures that highlight the diversity and adaptability of life on Earth. 🙏🤗
.5mm? That's bigger then i thought!
thank you chatgpt
lmao bro did not put any effort into changing the chatgpt
Damn I can see them with my bare eye? Cool

My mind immediately "Put it in human cells, mutates, unkillable cancer cells..."
The energy you have on telling these awesome facts makes me wanna come for more
Cancer cells watching this and rubbing their hands together like Birdman
I love how they are called in German.
They're called "Bärtierchen" and it literally translates to this "Bear-little-animals(?)"
Cause they look like little bears :3
You were close! It translates to that literally, but in reality it translates to “little bear animals” 🙃. I love the german language. Need a new word? Combine two or three that already exist lol!
There’s literally a word meaning “a face in need of slapping” (Backpfeifengesicht)
@@That_randomSwiftieThank you for help with translation! I speak three languages on the daily and they just get grammatically mixed up

Humans: (barely survive the last great flood)
Tardigrades: skill issues
They’re not even that good of an animal. They have protection against everything. Except for the things that will actually kill them.
the fact that you are over excited about everything you post just makes me fall in love with you.
can't stop staring at the hole in your ceiling
Tardigrades are from another planet. Fight me on that.
They are my favourite animal too. They hug each other
They do?! 🤗🥰
On one hand, it might help.
On the other, we could evolve Cancer and other like problems to be immune to radiation
"Yo I survived chernobl due to radiation resistance" "you have cancer" "F"
The first thing I think when I see these things is a hippo that had a grenade explode in its stomach causing it to inflate...
No I saw that too but it wasn’t a grenade 😂but it decomposed producing waste material that was trapped in it hence why it exploded
You are like, the polar opposite of that guy who gives me daily existential crises.
Are you talking about that guy Thomas Mulligan 🤔
they're basically definition of "PERFECT BEING"
So they're basically ALIEN.
Dude, they skipped like all the basic survival adaptations to be supernova proof while they are sleeping, they have like all the unnecessary adaptions while none of the necessary ones. They are far from perfect.
They can get killed by any trivial thing that exists in the universe and have a ridiculously short life expectancy.
Snails slurp these things up with zero effort
No it’s like the worst survival creature ever. It’s useless and shit. What’s the point of being able to survive without air water or food if a SNAIL can fill you by the thousands. They are NOT resilient against anything that will ever have a chance to kill them.
The trouble with putting those cells into humans is that your kid’s 3rd grade teacher will always give your kid a TARDY grade on his report card.
Just imagine these guys were macroscopic l 💀
See Season 1 of Star Trek Discovery, which explores this idea.
Tardigrades have been around through all of the mass extinction events
So if human could shield this genes in future and somehow the protein shielded cancer its would be crazy😅
But it’d sure make space exploration “more” viably than it currently is.
Thats a huge discovery 😭

I didn't realize that Natalie Portman understood tardigrades
Let’s say we do transfer the dsup cells into a human and how the human is less prone to being damaged by radiation. What happens to those same cells if they were to get cancer ? Will radiation treatments not work due to the cell being protected from radiation? Would it create a super cancer?
I'm glad I was born in a time when people have only 2 arms
A more tightly bound nucleosome? How is the DNA unbound for the genes to be expressed?

You’re telling my there are basically little microscopic terminators on the moon right now?
Yeah, no they can basically live through extinction. They are basically gods in basically being indestructible they’re too small to be harmed by most things they have crazy exoskeletons that are basically really powerful. They are amazing and indestructible.
I totally love this. Keep up what you're doing with these findings. Wish I could help...

They’re so cool cos they have this protection shield from radiation, but they also have great protection for freezing!!!
Their cells pull the water out of the cell so it doesn’t damage everything with the ice… very cool evolution right here!!!
Brilliant! I love your videos SO much!!!
I read somewhere a long time ago that this is the creature that the zenomorph in Alien is based on.
The creature in Alien can withstand all kinds of conditions.

Water bears have been my favorite critter for over 40 years. Anything that can survive space has my respect, and I mean look at them, they're adorable!!
Thanks to the tiktok aussie guy that talks all about "waterbears" on his channel, I find these little guys to be so cool. Thanks for the neat update about them! ❤
So we do a space vaccine for traveling beyond Earth
The funny thing about tardigrades is that they can survive everything exept the stuff that will actually probably kill them. Snails just destroy them with their snail goo, but if the Earth's atmosphere and magnetic feild just dissapear for some reason, there's a good chance they'll survive for a while.
I remember doing a presentation either in 3rd or 4th grade about extreme animals and I choose tardigrade
Love your videos!
