Eels in Asian cuisine are amazing, so I'm always confused when my non-Asian friends find them disgusting. But now I know why after seeing a picture of the traditional English eel...

In germany smoked eel is a staple of northern cuisine, also eel soup. The main problem here is that eel is overfished and harder and harder to get. European eel population has collapsed to 2% of what it was in the 70's.

+Abroadin Japan our former japanese professor, Mr. Yamaguchi, had brought back nori flavoured candy. For the life of me, I can't remember the brand, all I can remember is the package, plastic bag with lots of shodo-like writing on it. It was the wierdest thing I ate that posed as candy. Isn't candy supposed to be sweet? I love nori, but only on onigiri. It isn't exactly a delight when used as a poor substitute for candy. Have you ever eaten that?

+Clara Meijer aw, I'm from Romania. I did eat a loot of strange things my life. My husband is from India, and I've recently went to visit my in laws and ate some pretty wierd roadside foods. (and I didn't get any wierd disease with it, yay). but man. the nori candy is vile. we used to have Daiso here too. I love the wrappings, but the snacks...they are healthy, but bland. what I really look forward to, my husband and I decided to go on vacation to Japan, maybe next year, and I really really really want to try the whole array of odd flavoured KitKats.

I used to live and study in Japan, and when I was new there we went to an izakaya. And my company (who was Japanese) asked if I liked taco. "Taco? Yeah, sure - I like taco". "Let's order it" they said.
What we got on the plate (or rather, in a bowl) was not tacos, but something bright meaty slimy stuff. That's how I learned that "tako" is Japanese for octopus... And in this case raw. I really like squid and octopus, but can't really recommend it raw.

    • @atsukorichards1675

I agree. But natto is something you have to grow with it to like it. The word, fermented, itself might offend the people. And raw eggs can be a put-off for non-Japanese, too, I am afraid. (Some people are worrying about salmonella to death.) By the way, I am from Shiga prefecture, and do love Funa-zushi. My grandmother used to get a barrel of it every year and give some to each of us. (Oh, good old days.) I prefer the female for their eggs, but my American husband likes the male fish.

It was filled with old people eating stuff that I couldn't recognize. From the many things I was served this one jelly like grey/brown cube really imprinted itself on my memory. I had really hard time chewing it down while all old folks was checking that could I do it.
Later I was told it was some sort of fermented potato and it was popular some time after the war.

4 foods out thousands of meals. Japans cuisine has really so much to offer.
I dont know how weird, unique or interesting it is but... theres one type of meat I really fell in love with at Japanese Yakiniku restaurants. The Japanese also eat offal, which I dont like thaaat much (because you usually have to chew a lot). But theres one ホルモン (horumon (offal, organ meat)) which I reeaally like: Its called ハラミ (harami), which is meat cut from the diaphragm (of a cow). Maybe sounds a bit weird, but I really like it and think it just tastes great
