I just received this pistol as my 21st birthday gift. After doing a lot of research (your videos included) I chose this as the first pistol to be in my name, and man does it ever shoot like a dream! Couldn't be happier with my first pistol.
Yes, it is. Ruger has been making 1911 frames for years for other manufacturers. One of the things I really like about this one is that the plunger assembly housing is cast directly into the frame. So, no chance of it coming loose over time.
I have a 2+ year old Talo Edition SR1911 Night Watchman that I converted to 460 Rowland. That was after 1500 rounds of .45 ACP without a single FTF. After another 1200 rounds of 460 Rowland and another 500 rounds of .45 ACP, I am still very happy with this pistol. I have always had good experience with the function and ruggedness of Ruger Handguns (mostly revolvers), this one is no exception.
Have one now for several years and it's been great . FYI , I found that using Wilson 47D mags You must depress the mag release to get it to completely insert .
I have a five station progressive reloader. The shell was obviously undercharged. I check each case for powder as it enters the bullet seating die but I obviously missed that one. First time ever. Haven't had it happen since, yet! Thanks for watching!
ive had mine for a year and a half and it has never once jammed or had any malfunctions. Zero. 2000-3000 rounds estimated and it is going great. Ive owned 5 1911's (1 Kimber, Remington R1, 2 gov model Colts) and this one is just as every bit as good as all of them. This review is spot on
Fantastic handgun. I also purchased mine in 2011 for the 100 year anniversary of the 1911. Just as you said, "It has a bunch of features you want, no features you don't want and an awesome price for what you get". I don't have as many rounds through mine as you, but what a nice shooter. I would definitely recommend this handgun to anyone who is considering a 1911...
You can't go wrong with the sr1911 Rugar. The barrel and slide are stainless steel so they won't wear out . It has the skeletontized trigger, open hammer, novak sights, and beautiful diamond walnut grips. It is Rugar's 1st 1911. (2112). Rugar competes with Smith @ wesson and Colt by building stuff that doesn,t wear out. We love ours .
I managed to get my SR1911 in 2011 , and I have put countless rounds through it. My two year review is that it still works as good as the day I brought it home. It has a few holster scuffs on it but that is the price you pay when you carry. My Ruger has a slight rattle but it did the day it came out of the box. anyone who wants a 1911 should seek the Ruger , it is a very fine firearm .
Squib load means that there is little to no powder charge in the cartridge. So, when the firing pin hits the primer you get a very small ignition. Depending on how much powder is in the charge, the round may only have enough energy to push the bullet partially down the barrel but enough energy to cycle the slide and eject the spent casing. If you don't catch it, the next chambered round goes off and the bullet in the barrel already can cause a blockage and a catastrophic failure.
I recently bought one, Right out of the box, from 10 metres I was able to put 8 rounds into a 3" target using 230 grain copper jacketed blazer ball ammo. Absolutely love it! great sights. I've shot several hundred rounds out of it so far, cleaned it once. I use chip Chip McCormick 8 round Power Mags. I also have the ten round Mags as well, I've only used them in my Colt.
+Lawrence Dolha , quick question how does the accuracy compare to the Colt? Would you say one is more accurate then the other? have you had a chance to bench test the Colt VS the Ruger?
Just bought one of these beauties, and can't wait to get some range time! I actually chose this over the S&W SW1911 - and I'm a true fan of S&W firearms!
Man thanks for the 2 yr review. I have one and its bran new. I was wondering if the ruger 1911 was as tuff as my GP 100. i feel so much better now and this gun will be passed down to my grandkids grandkids. So far ruger has never let me down yet. God bless everyone here and God bless America.
Jim, that's a bit of an apple vs. orange question. A 1911 is very distinctive. The SR9 is more of a generic polymer/steel, striker fired, service pistol. They really don't compare well. The 1911 is iconic for its history, caliber (traditionally 45ACP), ergonomics, and being a single action only hammer fired pistol. Most people struggle with which 1911 to buy. It's not comparative to any other design imho. Thanks for watching.
Don’t cater to those nitpicking a-holes that make remarks about checking the weapon to make sure its not loaded, regular gun guys are aware you know your stuff. Nice review. I plan on getting this pistol.
Nice video and gun! I have had my SR 1911 now for about 8 months and will ditto your statements. I have put about 1500 rounds through mine without any issues whatsoever. Always have loved Ruger products and hope to add more to the collection soon!!! (as long as the government allows us)
Minnesota is a great state! My relatives live in Bloomington and Burnsville. This year I'm going to spend part of my vacation in Minnesota. By the way, great video. Greetings from Germany.
I have been considering that very gun for next purchase. Your review has done nothing to change my mind! I own nothing but Rugers so far, mainly because they fit my needs and budget better than just about anything else. That situation doesn't seem like it will change any time soon. Thanks!
I'm sold, I've watched the reviews from the major gun reviewers here on TH-cam and everyone seems to really like them. Great review, thanks for the info!
Glad I saw this video. Was in the gun shop yesterday and was looking at 1911s. Was iffy about what I wanted to get and decided to go with the SR1911 4.25. Had a little snag with the paper work but will get cleared soon. Hopefully I will enjoy it as much as you have.
I've owned this SR 1911 for almost 6 yrs now. It performs flawlessly. The front sight popped off the slide while shooting at the range, however. Ruger customer service was awesome. They sent me a new sight for no charge. No issues since then.
I love to hear the 1911 rattlething. The original 1911 that has been in so many wars was made with slight loose tolerances knowing that it was going to adverse conditions. The rattle is not a bad thing
I saw this beautiful firearm at Bass Pro the other day, LOVED how it felt, came back and started looking for reviews (I research EVERY major purchase to death) ... every review has great things to say about it, and in a few hours, I'll be there when the doors open to purchase my own Ruger SR1911. Out of curiosity, though, what didn't you like about the grips? This will be my "fun gun", not my EDC (which is a Glock 27) and I can't wait to shoot some paper with it!!!
I've got 4 Colt's including a stainless Gold Cup and a brace of Ruger SR1911 Lightweight Commanders(.45ACP & 9mm). I honestly cannot see spending any more money than I have on these guns for a true custom piece. Some will always want a Ferrari over a Corvette and if they've got the extra money, more power to them. Enjoy. Mine work fine. Working man, working man's guns.
I have the SR1911 CMD and have really come to love it. Shoots ragged holes at 15 yards for most 1911 shooters. Only malfunctions I've had with it came with steel cased ammo! Did add Hogue wrap around black rubber grips and Wilson ext. slide release and now it just becomes an extension of your arm. Still waiting for my squibb!
Thanks for the review. I've always been intrigued by the SR1911. I am, however, extremely surprised that you had such a bad experience with the MR 1911. Your experience seems to be VERY atypical. I bought one based on the many many rave reviews on it. I am very impressed with it. Crisp safety and crisp 3.5 pound trigger pull. It is extremely accurate. Slide to frame fit is very tight. In fact, most who compare the MR 1911 and SR 1911 say that the MR 1911 has a tighter fit.
I was blessed last week and was able to pick up one of these most excellent 1911's. Unfortunately I haven't been able to take it to the range yet, but i'm chomping at the bit to do so. There is only one thing that I would improve, the slide lock lever just doesn't stick out far enough for my liking. I own an American Classic II 1911 that has the lever that sticks out just a little more than the Ruger and I absolutely love it. Just gives my thumb a little more purchase.
Joakim: Thanks for the compliment. I'm not very familiar with the Taurus PT1911. As for "is this the enhanced model", it's the only full size 1911 Ruger makes right now and it comes with a number of enhancements. It would be comparable to the Remington R1 Enhanced from a feature perspective.
I'm a Ruger Fan mostly revolvers I have a number of 1911's Kimber , Springfield Armory , Para etc. my favorite 1911 is the SR1911 for the money and what it get with the gun is extreme value. After buying the SR1911 then I bought the sister SR1911 CMD both shoot flawless. When I go to the range both SR1911's are always in my gun bag - great video !!
I'm a new shooter, I purchased my first hand gun a few months ago ( springfield xd sub compact 9mm) been wanting a 1911 and looking at the rugers. After watching this video I'm buying 5 he ruger 1911, awesome review and 2 year follow up. Thanks!
Thank you for a true and honest video, been a glock man for years always had an appealing linger for a 1911, can't wait to get mine! Sr1911 talo edition with rail.
This is one bad-ass Semi-Auto. I did do the following to it. I'm not suggesting that you have to make any modifications on this pistol..I added a Wilson Combat full length guide rod and group gripper, which took a little work cutting the guide rod to fit. Checkered the front strap,20 LPI. Added a Smith & Alexander - MAG GUIDE and did a trigger job that pulls at 4 Lbs Polished the feed ramp, throated and polished the barrel. Have a qualified gunsmith do this if you're not certain that you can.
Have a colt Commander (Steel version) have fired thousands of rounds. Replaced the barrel this year with a new Ed Brown barrel. Still tight, no rattle’s. Have owed it for 37 years.
Lucky enough to get me one here in NZ. So glad i got it. nice feel, shoots great. decent price. Never looked at any 1911 till i saw this one. Very happy with it
I waited 3 months to get mine......Ruger makes great handguns and now they make a great 1911, I just ordered the commander model...I have custom 1911, Kimbers, Colts ect. the Ruger is incredible for the price...Novak sites, extended beavertail, it just has all the right stuff..
I've wanted one since they first came out. Yesterday I finally bought it. Sportsman's Den in Shelby Ohio 669.00 + tax. Firearms and ammunition prices have really dropped around here in the last few months. The only thing still difficult to get are .22 lr. Great video!
Purchased mine two weeks ago. I was looking at the S&W PC with the lightening cuts (impossible to get). This is my first 1911, but not the first I've handled. A lot of the same features as some of the Kimber's, but $300 less. I would take this thing into battle any day. I have several Rugers, but I tend to remain pretty impartial. But I don't buy crap guns either as one gets what they pay for. In this case, you get more than what you pay for.
Thank You! Helped With My Choice! Got Mine And Right Fron the Box Got Great Groupings At 30 Yrds! I Also Polished Mine To A High Sheen And It Looks Incredible! Couldn't Be Happier With This Gun!
Excellent review and just the information I have been looking for. This one has been on my must have list for the last year or so. Peace and blessings....
I review the RIA 1911 in another video. They are a good value. Nothing wrong with them. However, they're not, in my humble opinion, at the same level as the Ruger SR1911. Feel free to check out the vid! Thanks for watching.
I have an SR1911, love it and use it as my personal carry weapon. I want to get the new SR1911 Commander Style also as it would be a little lighter and would clear the holster a little faster.I also have had no problems with mine, Ruger really out done themselves on this pistol.Good video, thanks for making the effort and doing a good job.
Really like the CMD so far. Just have 200 round through it. Not one single problem. Since I have both the Full Size and CMD, when my son returns from his tour overseas, I think I'll give him his choice. But then again, I might just keep both and buy him his own...
I have a Rock Island 1911 in 10mm and it has no rattles at all, but my old Colt Double Eagle in .45 rattled like a baby rattle. It was so loose I didn't own it for more than 6 months before I sold it to get a P220 Sig. I love 1911's but they can't rattle or I will hate it. Glad to hear the Ruger is tight.
Good video as usual! Tanks for Sharing Kevin, you and I have very similar tastes in guns. My short list is the CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow in 9mm, the PPQ 4" in S&W 40, and the Ruger SR1911. I see you have owned all 3 so I'm looking foward to hearing more about the copies you have and your experiences. I guess I should get a Glock 17 too just to keep my friends happy! lol
I'm pretty happy with mine. Stainless/rosewood. The bead blast finish is delicate however. Mars extremely easily. Not that I need a gun to look like a vault queen but I'm thinking a brushed finish would have held up better. The bead blast finish looks great when brand new but it also degrades to a smudged or dirty look rapidly. I'm thinking about refinishing to a brushed slide with very fine sandpaper and oil but will probably lose my laser etching. Too bad they didn't cut that in deeper.
Sir, I appreciate your commentary about Ruger's offerings in the 1911 format. I am in complete agreement with you on this subject. Ruger's rendition in this model is nothing short of excellent. I appreciate your video, thank you.
Well done video. I appreciate your no nonsense and sensible delivery style. I've been wanting a new purchase and I've been debating a 9mm and a 45. I'm a Ruger fan so this just might be a nice addition.
89asparker, I would have to agree with you. However, I'm betting the culprit is the Winchester white box. They're notoriously light rounds and you need to move a pretty stout recoil spring/slide assembly to chamber the next round. I have over 2000 rounds through mine now without a single hiccup. If trainman549 moves away from white box and has the same issue, the pistol needs to go back to Ruger.
Good review, we just picked one up from GunBroker com for $725 after looking at every gun shop in Central Florida and comparing Different manufactures, the only Ruger we found from a local dealer (with in 100 miles) was going for 900 so we feel lucky to have found it reasonably and cant wait to go to the range,
Great vid as usual~ I think they are coming out with a 'tactical' railed version this year. I like in Vegas & will be going to Shot Show this month~ lemme know if there is anything you want me to check out~
I been looking at it for few months now, Around here I'm looking at 799.00 I've hoped it might go on sale. Your 2 yr. review only made me want it more.... Thanks!
Thanks for the info. I plan on purchasing one this weekend for $649 pre tax here in Maine. I sold my rock island so i could upgrade. Hard to find ammo here is 22mag.
The SR1911 has more features than the R1. The R1 Enhanced is a more comparable pistol. They are both great 1911's. Personally, I like the Ruger SR1911 better because of the 70 series slide, no firing pin block. It gives it a nicer trigger, IMHO, than the Remington. Thanks for watching!
Very nice review..clear and to the point..bought my sr1911cmd all stainless in 2014 and it is incredible...best sights and trigger of anything I own...perfect ergonomics and comes from Ruger with all the basic upgrades you would do anyway...great shooter...reliable and accurate..I just subscribed to your channel because of the way you revuewd this pistol...very nice ...thank you
check out the new ruger sr 45, plus the discontinued p345. i love mine. smooth shooting as can be the 345 is not for sale. but my favorite is my sr 1911. waited 8 months for it... im so pleased with it.. made in the USA my friend.. thanks for your video. and your honesty.. will subscribe now..lol
My SR1911 has a disappointingly lose slide/frame fit, but at $600 from my police supply store it was a great bargain, and is an excellent shooter. Thank you for posting.
David, life happened. Had kind of a tough year like many others. However, I've got some lighting, a lavalier microphone, and a decent camera again. I want to keep the production value up there. Not professional grade mind you but I want you to actually be able to see what I'm reviewing. I'm not a big fan of "throw it on the carpet and talk while trying to keep my iPhone steady" approach. Just me. Thanks for being patient. We've got some more comin'.
Thanks for the initial AND follow up vids on this fine firearm. My duty guns and personals have always been revolvers or DA semi's. I joined the 1911 family a couple of months back when I picked up a Llama Mini Max 9mm (CCW) and have enjoyed getting to know it. I came upon a used SR 1911 a couple of days ago and while I knew it was a solid "tack driver", it is good to hear about fit, finish, quality and durability. Looking forward to see if you've done anything on the Beretta 92 series- shush, don't say anything to the wife... Hooah!
Wasn't really speaking about service life, just a follow up to this point in time. You're right, 1000 round isn't an exhaustive test. Thanks for watching!
The Springfield 1911s tend to be very tight. I've found that they bobble a little until roughly 150 rounds. After that, they run perfectly. I've an S&W 1911 and it simply isn't put together as well. I love my Sig 1911. After that U have a couple of Kimbers that are excellent. I'd like to pick up a Ruger just to see how it compares.
In my experience I think you'll find the Ruger SR1911 compares very well. I would love to hear your feedback once you've had an opportunity to shoot it.
Ruger has a new version of this now. Its the SR1911 CMD. This model has a 4.25 inch barrel and looks awesome too.
Ive been aftet an SR1911 since they were introduced. It has been so hard to find one. I had forgotten about them.
Got one today. Will be keeping it for sure.

Yes I have experienced same problem with Wilson Magazine 47D mags. I also discovered the same Wilson Mag problem in my Springfield Armory 1911 as well
Purchased my SR1911 about the time this video was made and fast forward to year 2020 and it's still shooting flawlessly. Ruger, you make good stuff!
I just put a deposit down on one yesterday. I'll have it in 2 or 3 weeks! I can't wait!
Is there anything I should know about the gun that you have learned from owning it for so long?
I have a five station progressive reloader. The shell was obviously undercharged. I check each case for powder as it enters the bullet seating die but I obviously missed that one. First time ever. Haven't had it happen since, yet! Thanks for watching!

I just did get the SR1911 Officer. Can't wait to get out with it.... Had to come out and revisit you video.... thanks again!

Samuel Fuller I'm more a relaxed type of shooter and not competitive. I would say both are comparable, both are series 70.
Just bought one of these beauties, and can't wait to get some range time! I actually chose this over the S&W SW1911 - and I'm a true fan of S&W firearms!

gotta love a good solid steel ruger. getting one of these in commander size as soon as i can afford it.
still running good

Have a colt Commander (Steel version) have fired thousands of rounds. Replaced the barrel this year with a new Ed Brown barrel. Still tight, no rattle’s. Have owed it for 37 years.
Lucky enough to get me one here in NZ. So glad i got it. nice feel, shoots great. decent price. Never looked at any 1911 till i saw this one. Very happy with it
I buy from a number of distributors. My primary's are Davidson's, Bill Hick's Co., and Sports South.
Love the grips, love the pistol and have two. Haven't shot either one which is crazy, it's a homerun for Ruger.
Exactly the data I was looking for thanks dude.
Can't blame him. Thanks for the comment!
I just got my SR1911, on sale for $650 + tax.
+ag563 Great Deal
Good video as usual!
Tanks for Sharing Kevin, you and I have very similar tastes in guns. My short list is the CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow in 9mm, the PPQ 4" in S&W 40, and the Ruger SR1911. I see you have owned all 3 so I'm looking foward to hearing more about the copies you have and your experiences. I guess I should get a Glock 17 too just to keep my friends happy! lol
It is! It is!
Yes, many have created versions in other calibers.
No problem. Thanks for watching!
Great video! .. Looking for the SR1911, hard to find still.
Sir, I appreciate your commentary about Ruger's offerings in the 1911 format. I am in complete agreement with you on this subject. Ruger's rendition in this model is nothing short of excellent. I appreciate your video, thank you.
Gene: Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
Yeah, I've had a couple people ask me to demonstrate it so, there you go!
Good review, we just picked one up from GunBroker com for $725 after looking at every gun shop in Central Florida and comparing Different manufactures, the only Ruger we found from a local dealer (with in 100 miles) was going for 900 so we feel lucky to have found it reasonably and cant wait to go to the range,
Just got one of these, its a sweet shooting 45. Went through an entire 100 round Winchester white box with only 1 FTF.
Great vid as usual~ I think they are coming out with a 'tactical' railed version this year. I like in Vegas & will be going to Shot Show this month~ lemme know if there is anything you want me to check out~
Thanks! Most reviews are "here's my first 50 rounds." This was helpful.
We love ours and it’s out of the Box Accurate. Super smooth.
I been looking at it for few months now, Around here I'm looking at 799.00 I've hoped it might go on sale. Your 2 yr. review only made me want it more.... Thanks!
Nice score on the Ruger SR1911. Nice to see the prices getting more in line.
We lost our original light kit. There were advantages to the other set up. We'll take a look at what we can do. Thanks for watching!
Very nice review..clear and to the point..bought my sr1911cmd all stainless in 2014 and it is incredible...best sights and trigger of anything I own...perfect ergonomics and comes from Ruger with all the basic upgrades you would do anyway...great shooter...reliable and accurate..I just subscribed to your channel because of the way you revuewd this pistol...very nice ...thank you
thank you, picked one up, fired for the first time today......I'm hooked
great reveiw
check out the new ruger sr 45, plus the discontinued p345. i love mine. smooth shooting as can be the 345 is not for sale. but my favorite is my sr 1911. waited 8 months for it... im so pleased with it.. made in the USA my friend.. thanks for your video. and your honesty.. will subscribe now..lol
Great gun. Thank you for the update. BTW, I love the intro music to your videos.
Liked them so much, I bought two :). It is my primary carry piece.
Excellent point!
Very good review. I know I’m late to the party but mine has rattle in the trigger and grip safety. Slide is tight.
Great follow up review. I love my SR-1911!

My son got me ine for fathers Day Sunday. Thanks for the video
