Claire, I have been following you for close to 9 years now. You are an amazing artist, & I love & appreciate all of your tutorials. I have learned more from you than any other artist. Thank you so kindly for sharing your techniques with us. Much ❤️ to you.
Thank you so much for this tutorial!! I actually got a 12 pack of these to give a try with before even researching. I can't wait to try them out now and I'm absolutely getting the other 2 sets. This seems so much fun to do.
Thank you so much for a fun tutorial. After a very stressful and emotional week for me. This has been a well timed tutorial and perhaps a well earned treat for me. Can't wait to try them out xx
Lady Dalaryca you’re very welcome!!! They are mostly used with quite a lot of water, but we can’t do this is the usual colouring books, so I thought this would be useful xxx
Thank you so much for doing this tutorial, I've had a couple sets of the gelatos for awhile now but had no idea how to use them in my coloring books this was so helpful, thank you
Hello' thank you for this tuto because I was really not convinced by gelatos but now that I see clearly how to use them, I am going to buy them and have so much fun. Thank you
Cool!! Appreciate the info. I don’t have the gelatos yet but I do have the Neo color II’s. Any chance you could make a video on how you use your Neo colors? Specifically for backgrounds? Thx🙂
Hola me encanta tu trabajo y me encantaría que pusieras subtítulos para entender todas tus explicaciones. Muchas gracias por compartir tu arte. Abrazos desde Barcelona, España.
Hello claire , i was searching through your tutorials for anything about tips on using all the prismacolor grey shades of pencils . I appreciate you videos so much . I got Ivy and Inky butterfly. I love it
Gail Barrett me too!!! Johanna’s books are incredible. There’s a perspective dragon tunnel video which uses FC greys but will work equally as well with Prismas xxx
This is great. I haven’t got the gelatos but I’ve got a set of the silky crayons by tbc. I think they’ll work in the same way. I’ve not been brave enough to try on a page yet just the test page
Oh gee Claire as if I needed another great medium but these look fabulous and I’ve seen them a lot but tried to ignore them but not possible when you do reviews. Great work 🙏👏🌹😍
Claire Holoway Colouring oh I bought them Claire😁and I came back to go over your video as many show them for artwork or only backgrounds and I want to use them for our books and you do it so well👍🙏🌹
Another great tutorial. I'm an all in kinda girl and had to buy the entire gelato line! You are such an inspiration and I love all your tutorials! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Sing Gal glad you enjoyed the video! I do already have one for very basic wood and glass. The tutorials take quite a lot of time and planning. I’m back working full time at the moment so it’s hard for me to fit lots in at the moment but I do keep adding new ones as much as I can 😉
Hi Claire, I loved the way you’ve shown how to use gelatos for backgrounds. Please tell me, can I colour on the gelatos, using pencils like polychromos? Incase while doing the background, it smudges over the main colouring sections, can one use colour pencils to still colour in? Or is there anyway of wiping off the gelatos?
Claire I loved this tutorial & bought the gelatos but I can’t find the little stencil, it looks like what we would call a stamp but can’t find that either. Please enlighten me! ☺️
Claire - Thanks for the info on gelatos - good to have another use for my collection! I noticed that Kathy Bradley asked about the flames and smoke technique. Could I also see your info on that? I don't have an iPhone, but I have Facebook. Thanks!
Do you get a lot of color transfer on the facing page? I love the idea and have several metallics, but want to now get those "space" named ones. Thanks for the idea! I have used them in bible journaling, but if I remember I have only used them wet. Thank you for the wonderful idea!
How would you compare Gelatos with simple pastels and Neo Colors? And gel crayons? Partially I guess I’m asking ‘why gelatos?’.....other than fun, I mean. Thanks for this informative video.
Hi Claire, thank you for explaining so clearly how to use the Gelatos. If you use them with a drop of water and paint brush how long do they take to dry and when you close your book does any of the colour either come through on the page behind or he page opposite?
Irene Potter Thankyou for watching! Hardly anytime - a minute at most as you’re working virtually dry - so no bleed through. I keep tissue paper between my pages xxx
Claire Holoway Colouring hi and thank you. This was the question I was going to ask. Do you always keep a tissue paper between your pages? In other words will the gelatos always transfer to the opposite page without the tissue?
Nanette McCall as I’ve always used tissue I wouldn’t like to say for certain. You could always cover with a very fine spray of pastel fixative which may help
In a dry technique like this they’ll apply to set very easily. No water added. If I had used water I’d personally not prefer a sealant. Just tissue between pages 😁
If i use the dry technique will it dry completely so i dont have to use tissue between pages or as these more like oil pastels where the color comes off on your fingers unless unless you use a sealant? Thank you
I think you might want to use a washi tape or masking tape or even just plain paper that is larger then the book and fold the top and bottom into the other side of the book to protect your other page, as i can see the gelatos has run over to the next page. And might be better to place a thick paper, cardboard or plastic film at the back page to prevent the gelatos running from the side to other pages. By the way, what brush re you using?
Enviotonin85 hi! This is just a tutorial : practice book, so I wouldn’t usually bother doing that. But I would take precautions in my own book. I’m a bit puzzled about your advice re the gelatos running though, as this is a completely dry technique.
do you use a fixative afterwards so the colours don't go on the other page when the book is closed? Great representation on these btw... always curious about them! Would love to see MORE wit gelatos!
Hi Claire, Thanks for the nice tutorial! A question: could one do this ('the finger painting') with Neocolor II as well? I saw about half of the video (have to go to work now) so I hope I don't ask a question that you'd have answered in the second half :). Thanks so much!
Blues, greens and in betweens hi! I’m glad you liked the video. I’ve not used Neocolours extensively so I wouldn’t like to say for certain. What I do know is that while they’re waxy they’re nowhere near as soft as Gelatos - so I suspect not !!🎨🙂
Blues, greens and in betweens, you can blend the neocolor II with your finger but your finger needs to be wet. Even then you would need to put the Neo on the paper first. A good way to use them is to take a wet paint brush and go directly to the crayon. You will have more control that way. Like Claire said, Gelatos are much softer! Hope this helps!
Lacy Crowe I haven’t experienced this, but I separate all my pages with tissue paper. You could put a fine cover of pastel fixative over the top to be sure 😊
Interesting techniques..altho using my finger isnt for me I think I'd like to use a makeup tool instead that has a silcone type head....I quite enjoyed your tips on taking care of your gelato sticks...mikelle art mom👩🎨✍🎨
Thank you for sharing! Just wondering if you have colored the page in Ivy featuring the Dragon Queen cooking her steak? On that page are flames and smoke and I have everything colored with the exception of those features. I didn't see anything in your videos - but just checking to see if you have any tips regarding the "how to"? Thank you for your consideration!
Claire - I had to sound like a total moron - but I messaged you on FB and left a message here on TH-cam in your messages on your page. But iMessage - not familiar with that - so sorry. Kathy
That’s the major issue I have with almost all coloring books, the pages are shite. I’ve only found a couple that are marketed as watercolor coloring books that stand up. And none of them have very interesting subject matter. I just went to making my own coloring books out of hot press arches and a laser printer
Claire, I have been following you for close to 9 years now. You are an amazing artist, & I love & appreciate all of your tutorials. I have learned more from you than any other artist. Thank you so kindly for sharing your techniques with us. Much ❤️ to you.
What a lovely comment to read ❤️❤️❤️🙏

Rachel Knight aah great timing!!!! Thankyou for taking time out to leave positive feedback - they really are fun!!!
Wow! I just bought my first 2 sets of Gelatos and have been searching the Internet for a coloring book tutorial that uses these. Thank you thank you!
Lady Dalaryca you’re very welcome!!! They are mostly used with quite a lot of water, but we can’t do this is the usual colouring books, so I thought this would be useful xxx
Thank you so much for doing this tutorial, I've had a couple sets of the gelatos for awhile now but had no idea how to use them in my coloring books this was so helpful, thank you
Ah, gel Crayons!! I'm getting a another brand in a few days. What I'll use them for is backgrounds. New sub!!
Thank you this was very helpful. I appreciate the tips for using in coloring books.
This was a fabulous video. I like when you do videos they're very informative and you explain things very well.
Catrena Belgamh Thankyou for taking the time to leave such positive feedback - it makes everything worthwhile xxx
Hello' thank you for this tuto because I was really not convinced by gelatos but now that I see clearly how to use them, I am going to buy them and have so much fun. Thank you
Thank you so much Claire for making this tutorial. The gelatos look amazing.
Ann Bate hey lovely lady - been thinking about you xxx
Cool!! Appreciate the info. I don’t have the gelatos yet but I do have the Neo color II’s. Any chance you could make a video on how you use your Neo colors? Specifically for backgrounds? Thx🙂
You could also use some clear gesso to protect the page from too much water.
Hola me encanta tu trabajo y me encantaría que pusieras subtítulos para entender todas tus explicaciones. Muchas gracias por compartir tu arte. Abrazos desde Barcelona, España.

Thank you for the tips! I always use them with water but I will try this way too. :D
It's a pity we do not have Gelatos in my country.... I am prrparing a waiting list of supplies to buy on my next holidays.
Hi Claire❤️☺️🌸🌺❤️
This was very interesting, thank you for sharing this it's us.
Joetta Emerson you’re very welcome 😃
This is great. I haven’t got the gelatos but I’ve got a set of the silky crayons by tbc. I think they’ll work in the same way. I’ve not been brave enough to try on a page yet just the test page

Lo I learnt so much about these researching the tutorial - they’re fun 😍😍
Claire Holoway Colouring oh I bought them Claire😁and I came back to go over your video as many show them for artwork or only backgrounds and I want to use them for our books and you do it so well👍🙏🌹
Lo wow!!!!!!! I’m so very pleased you love them. Yes - there are methods did our books we can definitely use 😍
Another great tutorial. I'm an all in kinda girl and had to buy the entire gelato line! You are such an inspiration and I love all your tutorials! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Janetta Dobler wow!!!!! I think I’m responsible for spree buying 😆😆🎨🎨
Oh no! I just saw this Wonderful video, so Now I have a New ”must have” 🙈😍
Passionistacolorista oops 🥰🥰
Great Video! Can I please request you to do a video on textures such as wood, cloth, ceramic, glass etc? That would be very helpful.
Sing Gal glad you enjoyed the video! I do already have one for very basic wood and glass. The tutorials take quite a lot of time and planning. I’m back working full time at the moment so it’s hard for me to fit lots in at the moment but I do keep adding new ones as much as I can 😉

Sonali Shah I wouldn’t try to wipe off the gelato, but you might be able to colour over it as they’re completely dry 😉
Ok, thank you so much 😊
Claire I loved this tutorial & bought the gelatos but I can’t find the little stencil, it looks like what we would call a stamp but can’t find that either. Please enlighten me! ☺️
grannieannie40 mine came with my set. Google Faber Castell stencils - you’ll find lots xxx
I find stencils but not stamps like you are using, I’ll look again at more places than Amazon. Thanks for the prompt answer.
Claire - Thanks for the info on gelatos - good to have another use for my collection! I noticed that Kathy Bradley asked about the flames and smoke technique. Could I also see your info on that? I don't have an iPhone, but I have Facebook. Thanks!

I put sheets of fine paper between each finished page 🥰🥰🥰
Thank you very useful!

This is really beautiful but,can you spray w/fixative? Thanks for sharing.👏👀
Paula Wood I’ve not tried but I don’t see why not - I’d try on test paper first xxx
Being new to gelatos do they dry automatically? Does one need to use a sealant at the end of the artwork? Thank you

Dorothy Wong hi! I didn’t on this page, but you can. I usually separate my pages with tissue paper xxx
hello, do the gelatos bleed through the page?
moldodeea hi! They will bleed through if you use a lot of water with them but not with these dry / almost dry techniques 🙂
Do you gesso the paper or just smudge right away ? Really dont want to screw up my book
Straight on - I always get a practice book or a sheet of good quality paper to trial first .
Hi Claire, Thanks for the nice tutorial! A question: could one do this ('the finger painting') with Neocolor II as well? I saw about half of the video (have to go to work now) so I hope I don't ask a question that you'd have answered in the second half :). Thanks so much!

Kathy Bradley I have indeed coloured that page!!! Private message me on iMessage Kathy and I’ll happily show you and answer any questions xxx
Kathy Bradley you’ll find me as Claire Holoway xxx
Claire - I had to sound like a total moron - but I messaged you on FB and left a message here on TH-cam in your messages on your page. But iMessage - not familiar with that - so sorry. Kathy
Kathy Bradley I got your message xxx
If you activate it with a bit of water to set how will that work?
Maverick Mayhem this tutorial is for a dry technique. Activating with water may result in the paper warping.

Tommy Ohlrich oh wow!!!! I agree about the books. Very few actual watercolour and those aren’t great designs. Gap in the market?
superbes!!!
Do you use a fixative ? Ty
Gail Barrett personally no - but it’s fine to xxx
