Jake - I've been doing boat tours for 12 years down here in lower Terrebonne Parish in "hurricane alley" and regarding the cypress knees, I've learned from watching the trees survive the high winds, that these aerial roots function as a heavy duty anchoring system that holds the trees steady, allowing them to bend with the winds and not snap off like pine trees or come uprooted like swamp maples. AND any tree, like a swamp maple, that has the good fortune of growing up within that anchoring system is offered the same protection. I've seen it time and time again in the cypress swamp part of my tour where a high wind has uprooted a stand alone swamp maple, and 50 feet away, another maple was spared because it stood within cypress knees. Yes, it's my theory, but from first hand observations, I'd say it's a pretty good one!

Jake Wood ,you are WRONG sir about Caddo lake being the only natural lake in Texas .Look up Green Lake in Calhoun County.

Nice, maybe because it's technically in a basin making it a tidal lake. Who knows, I was raised on the lake and I believe its even in the history books as the only natural lake in the state of Texas as well as when you Google Caddo lake. I will say, it would be something worth looking into on why they classify Caddo lake as the only natural lake in the state of Texas.

Jake, who? Did you say, Wood? Because I grew up in vivian, and my last name is Wood.
